  • The feasibility of using Deinococcus showing strong resistance to both desiccation and ionizing radiation as a dose indicator of gamma radiation exposure was evaluated. Three Deinococcus strains having different levels of radiation resistance, Deinococcus radiodurans (DRD), Deinococcus radiopugnans (DRP), and the DRD pprI mutant (DRM), were selected to develop an appropriate dose indicator for a broad range of exposures. DRD, DRP, and DRM cultures with different numbers of cells [${\sim}10^7$ to $10^3$ colony forming units (CFU)/$100{\mu}l$] were lyophilized and subjected to various doses of gamma radiation to determine a critical dose that inhibited bacterial growth completely. Finally, a combination of DRD at ${\sim}10^7$ and ${\sim}10^6$ CFU, DRP at ${\sim}10^5$ CFU, and DRM at ${\sim}10^4$ CFU successfully indicated exposure to 5, 10, 20, and 30 kGy of gamma radiation, respectively. This study shows the possibility of developing a qualitative indicator of radiation exposure using Deinococcus.

  • A new approach to developing battery SOC indicator for electric vehicle is discussed in this paper. One of the most difficult problems associated with the development of electric vehicle is the battery indicator which reliably informs the state of charge(SOC) of the battery to the driver. And the condition to be satisfied with SOC indicator installed on the electric vehicle is that it should be used under frequently variable load. A new method to determining SOC using neural networks(NN) is proposed to satify the condition. The training data of NN are obtained by using mathematical model of lead-acid battery, and calculating discharge currents and terminal voltages while battery discharges with constant current. The 3-layered NN with back propagation algorithm is used Simulation results show that the proposed method is appropriate as SOC indicator of the battery.

  • Coastal zone management indicators are being used as an important means of decision making in the process of policy establishment for integrated coastal management and implementation, and these indicators are very useful tools that enable the evaluation of the coastal zone management from an integrated perspective, the understanding and analysis of interactions according to each department. Accordingly, most of organizations in international society and advanced coastal states tend to develop coastal zone management indicator system in order to check current coastal environment, social and economic status, also to grasp effectiveness of the coastal zone management policy. In this research, therefore, the characteristics of coastal zone management indicator system was drawn through understanding of strength and weakness, and conducting comparative analysis of the coastal zone management indicator system according to each level having classified domestic and international coastal zone management indicator system into three aspects at large: natural and environmental aspect; social and economic aspect; and network aspect. As a result, following features were drawn as the common characteristics among the cases in the advanced coastal states: the management means for realization of sustainable coastal zone management; scientific decision making tools for various stakeholders; evaluation means for effectiveness of coastal zone integrated management; and dualization of coastal zone management indicator system; etc. Lastly, based on these common values revealed in the domestic and international coastal management indicator system, a suggestion for correct establishment of the domestic coastal management indicators was proposed in the regional aspect.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the development of regional balance of 16 metropolitan councils in Korea, using an indicator index analysis. In each council, 18 indicators of the year 2015 which reflect regional development have been selected to diagnose the performances of the three sectors: economy, social, and cultural infrastructure. For the index of economic indicators, Gyonggi-do records the highest number of the indicators and followed by Chungnam-do which reaches about 94% of Gyonggi-do. The lowest region is Gwangju Metropolitan City which shows only 57% of Gyonggi-do. In the social sector, Gyonggi-do and Seoul City have high indexes while Gyeongsangbuk-do and Gangwon-do show relatively low indexes. This implies that the national economic and social capitals are concentrated in Gyonggi-do and Seoul City. For the index of cultural infrastructure sector, Jeju-do is the highest council and higher about 58% than that of Gangwon-do which is in the second highest level. In particular, the greatest unbalanced sector among the councils is the cultural infrastructure in which Jeju-do is the five times higher than that of Gyonggi-do and Inchon Metropolitan City. As a result, the cultural infrastructure sectors are particularly concerned in establishing the national policy for the development of regional balance of Korea.

  • Quality assessment of the building is strongly dependent upon satisfying owner's requirements. To develop indicators for the assessment of design quality, survey on current situation of design process and analysis of Design Quality Indicator(DQI) is performed. The survey revealed that the main cause of frequent design changes is variability feature of owner's requirements. DQI, an indicator developed in UK, questionnaire encompasses questions which are relevant throughout the development stages of a building, and can be used at every key stage of the process. Further research will focus on the development of indicators for the assessment of design quality applicable to Korean market. In addition, research on the visualization method to present assessment results and supporting tools to facilitate assessment will be considered.

  • Harmful dinoflagellate Cochlodinium polykrikoides blooms have been frequently occurred in coastal areas of the East Sea since 1995. We compared the oceanic conditions in years 1995, 2001 and 2003 when the C. polykrikoides bloom was strong, and in years 1998 and 2004 when the C. polykrikoides bloom was not appeared. We studied temporal and spatial variation of upwelling and geostrophic currents on the western channel of Korean Strait, an entrance of the East Sea. The period and occurrence area of C. polykrikoides bloom was depended on variation of upwelling in summer. In the distributions of geostrophic current, southward current was dominant near the coast in August, 1998 and 2000. Whereas northward current was dominant near and off the coast in August, 1995 and 2003 which the C. polykrikoides bloom was strong. When compared dominant phytoplankton of the coastal areas in each year, Kuroshio indicator species Proboscia alata and Chaetoceros affine were dominant, respectively, in 2001 and 2003 at every stations. However, the dominant species was variable at each coastal area in 1998 and 2000. In 2003, the abundance of Sagitta elegans which is known as the cold water indicator was low, but the abundance of S. enflata, warm water indicator, was very high in Gangneung compared to Sokcho. It seemed that the distribution of S. elegans is restricted by strong warm water current. In conclusion, it was estimated that the distribution of C. polykrikoides bloom in the coastal area of the East Sea was closely related with the strength of East Korea Warm Current and upwelling.
