  • In this work, an accurate analysis of low frequency current ripple in residential fuel cell power generation systems is performed based on the proposed residential load model and its unique operation algorithm. Rather than using a constant dc voltage source, a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) model is implemented in this research so that a system-level analysis considering the fuel cell stack, power conditioning system (PCS), and the actual load is possible. Using the attained results, a comparative study regarding the discrepancies of low frequency current ripple between a simple resistor load and a realistic residential load is performed. The data indicate that the low frequency current ripple of the proposed residential load model is increased by more than a factor of two when compared to the low frequency current ripple of a simple resistor load under identical conditions. Theoretical analysis, simulation data, and experimental results are provided, along with a model of the load usage pattern of low frequency current ripples.

  • Several environmental problems have occurred and extremely affected throughout the East Asia region. Satellite imageries and spatial information have been used in the applications of environmental and natural hazard management for years. Sharing these data and resources in the community is considered as one of the optimal solution. It would consequently bring cost saving to all participated countries and eventually be beneficial to mankind as a whole. Encouraged by these factors, ASEAN+3 Satellite Image Archive for Environmental Study project was submitted by Thailand in the 3rd Senior Official Meeting between ASEAN, China, Japan and Korea (SEOM+3 Meeting) and approved by the SEOM+3. The main objectives of this project are to share satellite images, information related to natural resources and environmental issues, and to provide data information services to all ASEAN+3 countries. The proposed system is basically embedded by distributed system. The network of data users, data providers, and the center will be established using the Internet. User can access, navigate, display, and even download some archived contents. Its service site can be generally categorized into two parts, which are environmental related data archive and the Integrated satellite image catalogue. The extension of web based GIS is also planned for future development so that GIS users can conduct some preliminary analysis directly on line. This presentation will indicate scope of work, system, working scenario, and work plan of the project.

  • Exploitation of renewable energies is on the increase to mitigate the reliance on fossil fuels and other natural gases with rocketing prices currently due to the depletion of their reserves not to mention their diverse consequences on the environment. Divergently, there are lots of industries "throwing" heat at higher temperatures as by products into the environment. This waste heat can be recovered through organic Rankine systems and converted to electrical energy with a waste heat recovery organic Rankine cycle system (WHR-ORC). This study uses the annual average condenser effluent from Namhae power plant as heat source and surface seawater as cooling source to analyze a waste heat recovery organic Rankine cycle using the Aspen HYSYS simulation software package. Hydrocarbon mixtures are employed as working fluid and varied in a ratio of 9:1. Results indicate that Pentane/Isobutane (90/10) mixture is the favorable working fluid for optimizing the waste heat recovery organic Rankine cycle at the set simulation conditions.

  • A numerical simulation technique of three-dimensional finite difference model is developed to study the groundwater flow system in Dcjima, an upland area which faces Kasumigaura Lake. For general perspectives of the groundwater flow system, a steady state three-dimentional model is simulated. For the sedimentary mud formations which are found in the representative formation, three situations of hydraulic conductivity are considered, representing an isotropic condition and situations where the horizontal permeability is equal to 10 times and 100times of the vertical one. The finite difference grid used in the simulation has 60x50x30=90,000 nodes. A converged solution with a tolerance of 0.001 meter of hydraulic head is set. Having determined the flow net by using a steady state three-dimensional model. the results for the three cases of hydraulic conductivity are compared with the results of tracer methods (Bae and Kayane 1987) With the aid of four representative vertical cross-sections, groundwater flow systems in the study area are assumed. Water balances for the three cases indicate very good agreement between total recharge and discharge in each case Analyses of groundwater flow system based on the tritium concentrations and water quality measurements (Bae and Kayane 1987) are confirmed by the numerical simulation and the results obtained by these two methods appeared to be in close agreement.

  • The general pharmacological properties of GCSB-5, a herbal formulation consisting of 6 Oriental herbs(Ledebouriellae Radix, Achyranthis Radix, Acanthopanacis Cortex, Cibotii Rhizoma, Glycine Semen and Eucommiae Cortex), were investigated in mice, rats, guinea pigs and rabbits. The administration of GCSB-5 had no effect on general behavior, and did not influence the central nervous system. Mean blood pressure, heat1 and respiratory rate and contractile response of the isolated guinea pig atrium were unaffected by the treatment of GCSB-5. Addition of GCSB-5 did not cause spontaneous relaxation and contraction of the isolated guinea pig ileum and rat uterus. And also, GCSB-5 had no effect on the gastrointestinal system and the blood system of the animals examined in this study. GCSB-5, at higher doses(1,000 and 3,000 mg/kg), increased the urinary excretion of electrolytes, however, the urine volume and pH in rats were unaffected. Taken together, these results indicate that GCSB-5 does not induce any adverse effects in experimental animals and is expected to have no significant general pharmacological activities.

  • Design parameters and goals play important roles in design. Design goals are the required functions of the design elements and explicitly expressed by design parameters. Design parameters also indicate the relations among design elements, by which constraint networks can be constructed and some useful information can be induced. In this study, the mechanical design process is assumed to be the assignment of design goals and their realization through the evolutionary refinement of the design parameters. Thus an integrated design system is proposed to support the process of assigning the design goals and refining the values of the design parameters. In the design system, a genetic engine that utilizes a genetic algorithm is installed to simulate an iterative design process, which leads to an evolutionary design. The genetic engine treats design parameters as genes and design goals as evaluation function. Re-design and design modification are facilitated by the design parameters. The re-design can be activated in the design system by using the information stored in the design parameters when design parameters or goals are changed.

  • A functional external fixator system for bone deformity near the joints using worm gear was developed for curing the angle difference in fracture bones while the lengthening bar was developed for curing the differences in length, also in fracture bones. Both experiments and FE analysis were performed to compare the elastic stiffness in several loading modes and to improve the functional external fixator system for bone deformity near joints. The FE model using compressive and bending FE analysis was applied due to the angle differentiations. The results indicate that compressive stiffness value in the experiment was 175.43N/mm, bending stiffness value in the experiment was 259.74 N/mm, compressive stiffness value in the FEA was 188.67 N/mm, and bending stiffness value in the FEA was 285.71 N/mm. Errors between experiments and FEA were less than $10\%$ in both the 'compressive stiffness and the bending stiffness. The maximum stress (157 MPa) applied to the angle of the clamp was lower than the yield stress (176.4 MPa) of SUS316L. The degree of stiffness in both axial compression and bending of the new fixator are about 2 times greater than other products, with the exception of EBI (2003).

  • Nowadays, activity recognition becomes a hot topic in context-aware computing. In activity recognition, machine learning techniques have been widely applied to learn the activity models from labeled activity samples. Most of the existing work uses only one learning method for activity learning and is focused on how to effectively utilize the labeled samples by refining the learning method. However, not much attention has been paid to the use of multiple classifiers for boosting the learning performance. In this paper, we use two methods to generate multiple classifiers. In the first method, the basic learning algorithms for each classifier are the same, while the training data is different (ASTD). In the second method, the basic learning algorithms for each classifier are different, while the training data is the same (ADTS). Experimental results indicate that ADTS can effectively improve activity recognition performance, while ASTD cannot achieve any improvement of the performance. We believe that the classifiers in ADTS are more diverse than those in ASTD.

  • In this paper, the authors propose a method to easily recognize and reproduce the robot motion made by an operator. This method is targets for applications similar to painting and welding, and it is based on a process of that identifies a family of plants, by control design and by conducting an experimental evaluation. In this study, the models and controllers for all joints of 3DOF robot system are obtained individually. And a robust control system for motion control of the individual joints is designed based on $H_{\infty}$ control framework. An experimental comparison is made between the proposed control method and existing PID control method. And the results indicate that the proposed designing method is more efficient and useful than conventional method.
