Manganese (Mn) nodules in the Arctic Sea have been founded in the Kara Sea and Barents Sea, but mineral and chemical compositions have been rarely investigated. In this study, mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of Mn nodules obtained during the Arctic Expedition ARA07C in northern East Siberian Sea were identified, and then genesis of Mn nodules were estimated by using these characteristics. Main manganese oxide minerals constituting the manganese nodule were buserite, birnessite, and vernadite. The Mn nodules generally represent radiated and massive texture, and the layered texture was developed restrictively. The radiated texture, main feature of the manganese nodule in the East Siberian Sea, is mainly composed of cuspate-globular microstructure. Compared with the Mn nodules in Pacific and Indian Oceans, Mn nodules of the East Siberian Sea are abundant in Mn, but Fe is too scarce. There was no difference in the chemical composition and microstructures between outer and inner part of nodule. Therefore, nodules are most likely to have only one genesis during their growth, and all of nodules indicate the diagenetic in $Mn-Fe-(Cu+Ni+Co){\times}10$ ternary diagram. It is considered that the manganese nodules in the East Siberian Sea are characterized by high Mn contents because manganese contents in the Arctic Ocean were mainly resulted from river or coastal erosion and most of them are trapped in the Arctic Ocean.
The hrp gene cluster in the plant pathogen Pseudomonas syringae is a key determinant of pathogenicity. Recent studies have demonstrated that specific host cell induction of the Ralstonia solanacearum hrp gene cluster is controlled by the PrhA (plant regulator of hrp) receptor. To characterize the role that P. syringae PrhA plays in the virulence of plant cells, a prhA homolog was isolated from P. syringae pv. tabaci and a $\Delta$prhA mutant was constructed by allelic exchange. The $\Delta$prhA mutant had reduced virulence in the host plant, and co-culture of P. syringae pv. tabaci and plant cell suspensions induced a much higher level of hrpA gene transcription than culture in hrp-inducing minimal medium. These results indicate that PrhA of P. syringae is a putative pathogen-plant cell contact sensor, therefore, we used a hrpA-gfp reporter fusion to monitor the in situ expression of PrhA. The results of this study demonstrated that PrhA induces hrp gene expression in P. syringae pv. tabaci in the presence of plant cells.
With the development of information technology (IT), various information systems (IS) such as Web-based systems and mobile systems have appeared utilizing different technologies. However, recent studies on IS use and user satisfaction rarely account for technological differences among IS and environmental characteristics where IS are intended to be used. The purpose of this research is to investigate the determinants of the use of Web-based ticketing systems for cultural activities and to empirically validate their relationships. Environmental psychology suggests that human beings respond to external stimuli from environments with their emotions, and their emotional states influence human actions, e.g., IS use in this research. Applying environmental psychology to the use of Web-based systems in the culture and entertainment industry, we propose that web site characteristics first influence a user's internal state of mind (i.e., flow) and then the flow state influences the IS use. Studies related to the state of flow collectively affirm the key role played by the flow construct in shaping individual attitudes and behaviors toward IS. Users' flow states are captured by their shopping enjoyment, perceived behavioral control, and the level of concentration on the IS use. Referring to social presence theory, we have included such web site characteristics as content quality, context of web site, and community quality. In our research model, a second order construct is utilized to represent web site quality, because flow theory suggests that holistic experiences with web-based systems (rather than individual characteristics of the web site) are important in explaining the IS use. Further, we have included trust as another important factor influencing the IS use since business transactions on the web encompass higher uncertainty comparing to offline transactions. In order to test our hypotheses, we have conducted an online survey which results in 1,141 valid responses in the final sample. The data were collected from respondents who have experiences in Internet ticketing systems. Although it was a convenient sample, the sample represents a wide variety of user demographics. Validity and reliability of the research instrument were tested and research hypotheses were examined using PLS Graph 3.0. The results indicate that web site characteristics significantly influence the level of user concentration, user's enjoyment in shopping, and perceived behavioral control. Further, the use of Internet ticketing systems is influenced by users' flow states and trust in the web channel. User satisfaction is turned out to be affected by the use of Internet ticketing systems. Unlike extant research on the relationship between web site characteristics and its use, our study has found that, in the culture and entertainment industry, the impact of web site characteristics on IS use is mediated by a user's flow state. This finding has a practical implication that web site design should include as many features that enhance shopping enjoyment and concentration. Other practical implications of these findings and future research implications are also discussed.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the seasonal variations of sediment oxygen demand (SOD) in Lake Paldang and Lake Chungju of the Han River system and to suggest SOD values as parameters for the water quality prediction models of two lakes. SOD was measured at laboratory using sediment collected at 2 sites in Lake Paldang from June to November and at 4 sites in Lake Chungju from May to November in 2005, respectively. It was found from the laboratory test that the SOD in Lake Paldang ranged from 337.8 to 881.0 mg $O_2m^{-2}d^{-1}$ and in Lake Chungju ranged from 143.0 to 969.1 mg $O_2m^{-2}d^{-1}$. The SOD of Lake Paldang showed similar variations to the content of organic matter of sediment. The SOD of Lake Chungju was positively correlated with temperature (r=0.78, p<0.01), $PO_4-P(r=0.79,\;p<0.01)$, TP (r=0.55, p<0.05), DTP (r=0.55, p<0.05), $NO_3-N$ (r=(0.72, p<0.01) of hypolimnetic water. These results indicate that the SOD of Lake Paldang was affected by the content and origin of organic matter of sediment and the SOD of Lake Chungju was closely correlated with physical and chemical factors.
Although normal thyroid epithelial cells do not constitutively express HLA-DR antigen, their expression in wide spread within thyroid glands obtained from the human with autoimmune thyroid disease and with many neoplastic thyroids. We have, therefore, studied immunohistochemically with regard to the expression of HLA-DR antigen of thyroidectomy specimens from 50 patients of various thyroid diseases with use of paraffin-embedded tissue. One or two sections from each case were stained with commercially available mouse monoclonal antibody for class II HLA-DR antigen(HLA-DR/Alpha, DAKO) and examined by semiquantitative counting system for thyrocytes, neoplastic thyrocytes and other cells expressing HLA-DR antigen. All patients with lymphocytic thyroiditis(2/2) and diffuse hyperplasia(Graves' disease)(5/5), most patients with Hashimoto's disease(9/ll) expressed HLA-DR antigens in thyrocyte with abundant HLA-DR expressing lymphocytic infiltrates with lymph follicle formation in its vicinity or adjacent to the lesion. Most patients with papillary carcinoma(9/1l) had HLA-DR antigen detected in malignant thyrocytes ; while follicular carcinoma(0/3) and follicular adenoma(0/5) did not have detactable HLA-DR immunoreactivity. Adenomatous goiter(3/7) had HLA-DR antigen detected focally in lesser than half cases. Conversely, in four papillary carcinomas and three adenomatous goiters, HLA-DR expression of thyrocytes was found in the absence of HLA-DR expressing lymphoid infiltrates. In such cases therefore other factors more than thyroid autoimmunity must be causative for HLA-DR immunoreactivity. The results of this study indicate as follows. 1) The expression of HLA-DR on thyrocytes involved in autoimmune reactions appeared to be secondary to cytokine release from associated lymphocytic infiltrates. 2) Thyrocytes in thyroid lesions with equal degrees of lymphocytic infiltration without HLADR expression exhibited no HLA-DR immunoreactivity. 3) In neoplastic thyrocytes, most papillary carcinoma(9/11) exhibited detactable HLA-DR expression, while follicular carcinoma/adenoma(0/3/0/5) exhibited no detactable HLA-DR immunoreactivity which suggest the existence of divergent mechanisms inducing and modulating HLA-DR expression of different types of neoplastic thyrocytes.
This study investigated the effect of ohmic thawing on the physicochemical properties of pork meat. The physicochemical properties of pork meat thawed by brine immersion and electrode contact ohmic systems were compared. A more rapid thawing rate was seen with the electrode contact thawing system than with brine immersion. No significant differences in pH were found with increasing voltage for both thawing methods (p>0.05). Increasing the voltage level tended to decrease drip loss, resulting in increased water holding capacity. The shear forces of pork thawed at 50 V did not differ from the control (p>0.05) for both thawing methods. Although significantly high TBARS (p<0.05) values were found at 20 and 40 V for immersion, and 0 V for contact thawing, increasing the voltage level tended to decrease the TBARS values. Regarding TVBN, no significant effect was observed with increasing voltage levels (p>0.05). The total color difference of pork was significantly higher (p<0.05) with immersion thawing than with electrode contact thawing. These results indicate that brine immersion thawing is favorable at high voltage levels, while lower voltage levels are applicable for electrode contact thawing.

Since existing nonintrusive appliance load monitoring (NIALM) studies assume that voltage fluctuations are negligible for load identification, and do not affect the identification results, the power factor or harmonic signals associated with voltage are generally not considered parameters for load identification, which limits the application of NIALM in the Smart Home sector. Experiments in this paper indicate that the parameters related to voltage and the characteristics of harmonics should be used to improve the accuracy and reliability of the load monitoring system. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an improved NIALM method that can efficiently analyze the types of household appliances and electrical energy usage in a home network environment. The proposed method is able to analyze the energy usage pattern by analyzing operation characteristics inherent to household appliances using harmonic characteristics of some household appliances as recognition parameters. Through the proposed method, we expect to be able to provide services to the smart grid electric power demand management market and increase the energy efficiency of home appliances actually operating in a home network.
Objective : Despite advances in the understanding of tumor biology and the tumor immunology, there has been no effective treatment. The Intercellular adhesion molecule-1(ICAM-1) has been shown to be important in interaction involving cells of the immune system and to be upregulated in a number of cell culture systems by cytokines, including immune interferon($IFN-{\gamma}$) and tumor necrosis $factor-{\alpha}$($TNF-{\alpha}$). ICAM-1 has been identified as one of the ligands for lymphocyte function-associated antigen-1(LFA-1). The effectiveness of various cytokines to ICAM-1 induction on cultured human glioblastoma cell lines and potential efficacy of immunotherapy were studied. Method : Human glioblastoma cell lines, U-251 MG, U-373 MG were trypsinized and suspended at $1{\times}10^5cells/ml$ and grown on 8 well chamber slide, the cells were incubated in 0.3ml medium alone or medium containing $IFN-{\gamma}$(1000U/ml) or $TNF-{\alpha}$(250U/ml) or $IFN-{\gamma}$ plus $TNF-{\alpha}$ for 6, 12, 24, 48 and 72 hours. The coverslip were then removed and stained with a 1/30 dilution of anti-ICAM-1 antibody. Result : Surface antigen expression of ICAM-1 was increased by incubating glioblastoma cell lines with $IFN-{\gamma}$ and $TNF-{\alpha}$. Combined effect of $IFN-{\gamma}$ and $TNF-{\alpha}$ has induced more ICAM-1 expression on glioblastoma cell lines. Upregulation of ICAM-1 expression in an established glioblastoma cell line was of greater magnitude and more rapid following incubation with $IFN-{\gamma}$ plus $TNF-{\alpha}$. Surface antigen expression of ICAM-1 was increased for up to 48 hours after cytokine treatment on both cell lines(p<0.05). There was no difference on both cell lines(p>0.05). Conclusion : The results of the present study indicate that ICAM-1 expression in glioblastoma cell lines, U-251 MG and U-373 MG, are induced and enhanced after treatment with $IFN-{\gamma}$ and $TNF-{\alpha}$. Combined effect of $IFN-{\alpha}$ and $TNF-{\gamma}$ is stronger and more rapid than $IFN-{\gamma}$ or $TNF-{\alpha}$ alone.

Objective : We investigated the effect of optimization in dose-limiting shell method on the dosimetric quality of CyberKnife (CK) plans in treating brain metastases (BMs). Methods : We selected 19 BMs previously treated using CK between 2014 and 2015. The original CK plans ($CK_{original}$) had been produced using 1 to 3 dose-limiting shells : one at the prescription isodose level (PIDL) for dose conformity and the others at low-isodose levels (10-30% of prescription dose) for dose spillage. In each case, a modified CK plan ($CK_{modified}$) was generated using 5 dose-limiting shells : one at the PIDL, another at intermediate isodose level (50% of prescription dose) for steeper dose fall-off, and the others at low-isodose levels, with an optimized shell-dilation size based on our experience. A Gamma Knife (GK) plan was also produced using the original contour set. Thus, three data sets of dosimetric parameters were generated and compared. Results : There were no differences in the conformity indices among the $CK_{original}$, $CK_{modified}$, and GK plans (mean 1.22, 1.18, and 1.24, respectively; p=0.079) and tumor coverage (mean 99.5%, 99.5%, and 99.4%, respectively; p=0.177), whereas the $CK_{modified}$ plans produced significantly smaller normal tissue volumes receiving 50% of prescription dose than those produced by the $CK_{original}$ plans (p<0.001), with no statistical differences in those volumes compared with GK plans (p=0.345). Conclusion : These results indicate that significantly steeper dose fall-off is able to be achieved in the CK system by optimizing the shell function while maintaining high conformity of dose to tumor.
The study was carried out to determine the toxicity of cyanide on the hemochemical changes of Israel carp, Cyprinus carpio reared under a continuous-flow system for 5 weeks, The carps exposed to cyanide concentation oyer 151 $\mu$g/$\ell$ started to decrease significantly in red blood cell count, hemoglobin concentration and hematocrit value at week 4. However a significant elevation of MCH and MCV was noticed a week later, at week 5 at cyanide concentration 289 $\mu$g/$\ell$. The low concentration of serum calcium was observed at the last week of the experiment in cyanide concentration 151 $\mu$g/$\ell$, while serum magnesium concentration initiated to increase from the 4th week at the cyanide concentration 289 $\mu$g/$\ell$. Serum -total protein, albumin and glucose concentrations decreased significantly after 4th week at the concentration over 151 $\mu$g/$\ell$. A significant increment of GOT, GPT and LDH activities in the carp serum was noticed after 3rd week at cyanide concentrations over 151$\mu$g/$\ell$ without typical changes of Al-P and amylase, These results indicate that carps can be affected by cyanide in terms of red blood cell count, hemoglobin concentration and hematocrit value in blood, calcium and magnesium concentration, GOT, GPT and LDH activities in serum when they were exposed to the cyanide concentrations 151 $\mu$g/$\ell$ or higher.
