  • While the importance of social integration has been mainly emphasized in the fields of social welfare services for the elderly, disabled and lower income citizens, many types of elderly housing had been developed in a way of segregating the elderly from society rather than integrating. Meanwhile, shared group house may allow older people to 'age in place' within the communities where they used to live by providing them with social, economic and practical benefits. The purpose of this study is to carry out empirical research on responses to elderly shared group house. Interview survey with questionnaire was conducted among 138 elderly people between 60-75 years old, living in Seoul and its metropolitan area. Responses of the elderly included awareness, perception and preference. It was revealed that the respondents had negative perceptions on existing shared group house in Korea. Most of the respondents showed preference to moving into socially-integrated type of shared group houses developed within their communities. This study indicated the potential of such type shared group house to become a favorable housing alternative for elderly people which supports their sustainable independent living within community.

  • In Korea, the evolution of welfare for people with disabilities can be divided largely four stages. The first phase is before 1981, the second is from 1981 to 1988, the third is from 1989 to 2006 and the fourth phase is from 2007 to now. In the first phase people with disabilities were considered as ones of charity. In the second period the welfare ideal for people with disabilities was appeared. In the third, the framework of welfare system for people with disabilities was formed and welfare services began to be expanded. The fourth phase has been the time to secure human right and social services for people with disabilities. In Korea, for people with disabilities, 2007 was the year of historical turning point. "The Act of Prohibition on Disability Discrimination and Remedy for Right"was built that year and became effective the next year. Also "The Special Education Act for People with disabilities" was enacted newly. "The Disabled Welfare Act" was amended for the change of welfare paradigm. The change is introduction of Independent Living. After 2007 Korean legal systems for people with disabilities have been improved largely.

Methods: This study analyzed the data of 3,113 persons with disabilities over 65 years of age who responded to the questionnaire using data from the National Survey of People with Disabilities in 2017 on the people with disabilities (PWD). Descriptive statistics, X2-test, and independent sample t-test were conducted using the SPSS win 21.0 program. Results: The prevalence of osteoporosis in the elderly PWD was 18.7%. There were significant differences in sex, age, type of disability, and disability severity according to the presence or absence of osteoporosis (p<0.05). Walking and Transfer of ADL were related to osteoporosis in elderly PWD. Financial management and Transportation use of IADL were related to osteoporosis (p<0.05). The PWD with osteoporosis were analyzed to have lower health-related quality of life compared to the disabled elderly without osteoporosis (p<0.05). Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, a strategy for developing a program for managing osteoporosis. Strengthening health management in the elderly PWD is required.

  • This study was conducted to present the basic data for the revitalization of lifelong education for people with developmental disabilities by exploring variables affecting their willingness to participate in lifelong education. Among the original data on the disability survey in 2017, data on developmentally disabled people were used, and 16 variables that could affect the intention to participate in lifelong education of the developmentally disabled as independent variables were used as dependent variables. Each set was performed for logistic regression. As a result of this study, the gender, age, disability level, family support, life satisfaction, and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living of the people with developmental disabilities were found to be variables that significantly influence the intention to participate in lifelong education for the people with developmental disabilities. In order to revitalize lifelong education for people with developmental disabilities, it will be necessary to provide a way to improve the willingness of people with developmental disabilities to participate in lifelong education as well as to build infrastructure such as expanding institutions and related personnel and programs.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate effect of hospital-based physical and occupational therapy on Modified Barthel Index (MBI) score in stroke inpatients at least 3 months after stroke, to predict MBI score at discharge from subscales of MBI, and determine the characteristics of stroke at admission. Forty-five stroke inpatients participated and received physical and occupational therapy for two months. All participants were assessed on MBI at admission and discharge. The collected data was analyzed by dependency level (MBI${\leq}$74 and MBI${\geq}$75) at admission. The results revealed that the MBI score at discharge was significantly improved compared to the MBI score at admission in the group with more than moderate dependency level (MBI${\leq}$74). In particular, personal hygiene, dressing, ambulation, and chair/bed transfer were improved. But only ambulation was improved significantly in the group with a less than mild dependency level (MBI${\geq}$75). The chair/bed transfer, dressing, ambulation, and Mini-Mental State Exam-Korea score at admission were important factors in the MBI score at discharge. Eighty-six percent of the variation in MBI score function at discharge can be explained. Therefore, it is suggested that hospital-based physical and occupational therapy in subacute stroke improve independent living status, especially for patients with a more than moderate dependency level.

  • A wheelchair is a typical mobility aid for the physically disabled or the old and the weak, and is the most commonly used rehabilitation aid. In general, most of users of manual wheelchair have difficulty though vocational rehabilitation and independent living is possible. The reason is that long-distance movement is always accompanied with wheelchair transfer problem because a wheelchair is used as direct means of transport. Hence, the wheelchair transfer problem should be first solved in order that a wheelchair user can independently live. Therefore, this study examined and analyzed the domestic and overseas launched products and patented technologies of wheelchair transfer system for vehicle, and proposed a wheelchair transfer mechanism of a new system for vehicle. This study proposed a wheelchair transfer mechanism for vehicle in order to remove the disadvantage of wheelchair transfer system for vehicle to support the conventional wheelchair user's movement, and in order to conform with the structure of domestic welfare vehicle for the disabled. Because a difference between storage space installed in the roof of vehicle and storage space for leisure, which is generally utilized, gets to disappear by applying this proposed mechanism, popularity among users can be increased. And storage space that has become smaller like this will be capable of decreasing the disadvantage of air resistance in traveling. Besides, because of getting to conform with the structure of welfare vehicle, restrictions on the application range will disappear from small sedan to SUV. Therefore, users can have more choices.

  • This study attempts to identify the changes in social reactions to disabilities in general, and to research the contextual implication of these changes in social work practice in Korea. In the early years after the Industrial Revolution, disability was conceived as social unfitness and it was assumed that the cause and responsibility could be attributed to people with disabilities. But, in the midst and late 20th century, social responsibility for people with disabilities was argued and generally accepted. As the results of these changes, conceptual models explaining disabilities have changed gradually; there has been a transition, so called, from individual model to social model. In a similar vein, WHO has refined the definition and classification of disability. Related to these changes, social welfare service paradigm for people with disabilities has shifted. This paradigm shift can be explained with the perspective of strength approach, empowerment approach, case management and independent living model. In Korea, 1998 Act on welfare for people with disabilities meant that social service for the disabled were categorized with, namely, residential service, community rehabilitation service and vocational rehabilitation service. Recently, the extent of these services has been rapidly broadened. In these situation, this study researched to identify the implications on social work practice in the context of changes in social response, conceptual model, definition and also service paradigm. Such as the followings are enumerated for the implications: disabled person's participation in assessment process, development of assessment tools focusing on social and environmental perspectives, reinforcement of information service helping self-determination, supporting on formal and informal helping network, expanding self-help programs and, finally, a shift from displacement model to support model.

  • The primary objective of this study is to examine differences between the persons with recent onset and chronic mental illness in their family function; and analyze factors influence on the family function. The independent variables are divided into four sets: socio-economic, clinical, familial, and social characteristics. The subjects of this study are the 628 with mental disorders, and the sample was selected in Pusan and Gyeong-nam area. The findings of this study can be summarized as followed: The family with chronic mental illness showed higher family function in comparison with recent onset. Result of hierarchical multiple regression analysis show that age of onset, difference between ideal and reality in family function variable only influenced family function for the recent onset group, and activities of daily living, difference between ideal and reality in family function, caregiver's health, community support variables influenced family function for the chronic group. The results suggest a need for using different treatment approaches for recent onset versus chronic mentally disabled families. Implications for mental health social work practice for family with disabled are suggested.

  • In the West, the model for provision of services to the disabled has shifted from a focus on the individual to that of a social model. This shift reflects a movement away from a materialist approach to one that is grounded in idealism. In the context of themultiple service paradigm movement this paper explores trends in the provision of social services to the disabled in Korea. In order to accomplish this task the writer conducted an analysis of Korean Community Chest proposals, existing legislation and legislative systems as well as the disability movement in Korea. Data was collected from the 2003 program proposals submitted to the Korea Community Chest. This data was classified using Priestly's Multiple Service Paradigm of Disability. The results suggest that the Korean Community Chest favored an individual idealist approach. There was only limited support given to proposals that reflect the social model approach and thus issues of accessibility, independent living and inclusion are given short shrift. This paper argues the need for a reversal of this trend through the Korean Community Chest supporting issues mentioned above and that the social model should be given greater attention by this funding body. Implications for practice using the multiple paradigm model are discussed.
