The indentation test, which is one of the testing methods for evaluating the mechanical properties of materials, can be applied to the evaluation of creep properties. Many studies related to the indentation creep test, however, have just focused on the characteristics of the steady-state creep, so there are wide discrepancies between the uniaxial test and the indentation test. To obtain accurate creep properties, it is therefore important to consider the effects of transient creep. In the present work, the Ogbonna et al.'s work on the spherical indentation test including the transient creep was expanded and applied to the conical indentation creep test. The characteristics of the transient creep were analyzed via finite element simulations and compared with those obtained through spherical indentation. Other effects, such as elastic strain, indenter shape, contact area, and representative strain, which have not been considered properly in prior studies on the creep test, are also discussed.
MgO-C refractories are used in basic furnaces and steel ladles due to their many desirable properties, such as excellent thermal shock resistance via low thermal expansion, and high thermal conductivity. However, the mechanical and thermal properties of the refractory continuously deteriorate by spalling phenomena and pore generation due to the oxidation of graphite, used as a carbon source, indicating that the characteristics and performance of MgO-C refractories need to be improved by using a new material or composition. In this study, the use of a Hertzian indentation test as a method for determining the damage and fracture behavior of an MgO-C refractory is described. The results highlight that Hertzain indentation tests can be one of the important evaluation tools for quasi-plastic damage accumulation of MgO-C refractories during falling process of scrap metal.
Instrumented indentation testing has been widely used for residual stress measurement. The Knoop indentation is mainly selected for determining anisotropic mechanical properties and non-equibiaxial residual stress. However, the measurement of equibiaxial stress state and compressive residual stress on a specimen surface using Knoop indentation is neither fully comprehended nor unavailable. In this study, we investigated stress conversion factors for measuring Knoop indentation on equibiaxial stress state through indentation depth using finite element analysis. Knoop indentation was conducted for specimens to determine tensile and compressive equibiaxial residual stress. Both were found to be increased proportionally according to indentation depth. The stress field beneath the indenter during each indentation test was also analyzed. Compressive residual stress suppressed the in-plane expansion of stress field during indentation. In contrast, stress fields beneath the indenter developed diagonally downward for tensile residual stress. Furthermore, differences between trends of stress fields at long and short axes of Knoop indenter were observed due to difference in indenting angles and the projected area of plastic zone that was exposed to residual stress.
Safety diagnosis of various structural components and facilities is indispensable for preventing catastrophic failure of material by time-dependent and environment accelerating degradation. Also, this diagnosis of operating components should be done periodically for safe maintenance and economical repair. However, conventional standard methods for mechanical properties have the problems of bulky specimen, destructive procedure and complex procedure of specimen sampling. So, a non-destructive and simple mechanical testing method using small specimen is needed. Therefore, an advanced indentation technique was developed as a potential method for non-destructive testing of in-field structures. This technique measures indentation load-depth curve during indentation and analyzes the mechanical properties related to deformation such as yield strength, tensile strength and work-hardening index. In this paper, we characterized the tensile properties including yield and tensile strengths of the V-modified Cr-Mo steels in petro-chemical and thermo-electrical plants. And also, the effects of hydrogen-assisted degradation of the V-modified Cr-Mo steels were analyzed in terms of work-hardening index and yield ratio.
Continuous indentation test is a very powerful method to monitor the materials reliability since it is very simple, easy and almost non-destructive. It can provide material properties such as elastic modulus, yield strength, work-hardening exponent, etc., than the conventional hardness test. In our study, the true stress-strain curve is derived from the indentation load-depth curve. For this, average indentation strain is defined and the flow stress is obtained from the analysis of the indentation stress field. The residual stress is analyzed from the variation of the indentation behavior with the applied residual stress. And the estimation of fracture characteristic is tried by considering the conventional fracture toughness modeling and the stress/strain state under the spherical indenter.
The mechanism of biological materials structure is very complex and has optimal properties compared to engineering materials. Top Neck mollusks shells, as an example of biological materials, have hierarchical structure, which 95 percent of its structure is Aragonite and 5 percent organic materials. This article detected mechanical properties of the Top Neck mollusks shell as a Nano composite using Nano-indentation method in different situations. Research findings indicate that mechanical properties of the Top Neck mollusks shell including elastic modulus and hardness are higher than a fresh one preserved in -50 centigrade and also a Top Neck mollusks shell preserved in environmental conditions. Nano-indentation test results are so close in range, overall, that hardness degree is 3900 to 5200 MPa and elastic modulus is 70 to 85 GPa.
With the increasing interest in using bacterial biofilms in geo-engineering practices, such as soil improvement, sealing leakage in earth structures, and hydraulic barrier installation, understanding of the contribution of bacterial biofilm formation to mechanical and hydraulic behavior of soils is important. While mechanical properties of soft gel-like biofilms need to be identified for appropriate modeling and prediction of behaviors of biofilm-associated soils, elastic properties of biofilms remain poorly understood. Therefore, this study investigated the microscale Young's modulus of biofilms produced by Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 in a liquid phase. The indentation test was performed on a biofilm sample using the atomic force microscopy (AFM) with a spherical indentor, and the force-indentation responses were obtained during approach and retraction traces. Young's modulus of biofilms was estimated to be ~33-38 kPa from these force-indentation curves and Hertzian contact theory. It appears that the AFM indentation result captures the microscale local characteristics of biofilms and its stiffness is relatively large compared to the other methods, including rheometer and hydrodynamic shear tests, which reflect the average macro-scale behaviors. While modeling of mechanical behaviors of biofilm-associated soils requires the properties of each component, the obtained results provide information on the mechanical properties of biofilms that can be considered as cementing, gluing, or filling materials in soils.

In this work, effects of hyper-elastic rubber material properties on the indentation load-deflection curve and subindenter deformation are examined via finite element (FE) analyses. An optimal location for data analysis is selected, which features maximum strain energy density and negligible frictional effect. We then contrive two normalized functions, which map an indentation load vs. deflection curve into a strain energy density vs. first invariant curve. From the strain energy density vs. first invariant curve, we can extract the rubber material properties. This new spherical indentation approach produces the rubber material properties in a manner more effective than the common uniaxial tensile/com-pression tests. The indentation approach successfully measures the rubber material properties and the corresponding nominal stress-strain curve with an average error less than 3%.
In this study we tried to determine the work-hardening exponent using continuous indentation test. Work-hardening exponent, which was determined by Hollomon equation, in tensile test, is an important parameter to determine plastic deformation and brittle/ductile property of materials. For using Hollomon equation, true stress and true strain were defined by indentation depth and indentation load. Using them the new equation, which is constituted by indentation depth, indentation load and work-hardening exponent, was induced. Indentation depth was calibrated because of elastic deflection and pile-up/sink-in phenomena. Work-hardening exponents of various steels derived by it showed good agreement to the results of tensile tests. In addition to experiments, FEM simulation was accomplished to investigate changes of real contact depth with materials properties changes. Through this simulation it is concluded that the real contact depth is changed by Y/E value which affect the early stage of indentation, and work-hardening exponent which the latter stage.

The BI(Ball Indentation) method has a potential to assess the mechanical properties and to replace conventional fracture tests. In this study, the BI test system has been developed to evaluate material properties. Tensile tests, fracture toughness tests, hardness tests and BI tests were performed by the system using four classes of thermally aged specimens. The results of the BI tests were in good agreement with fracture characteristics from a standard fracture test method.
