In this paper, cracking threshold for nanoindentation is analyzed by using 3D finited-element method. The analysis by maximum principal stress criterion can obtain the reliable results for determining to crack initiation location and load. Because the ratio of maximum principal stress to indentation depth for Victors indentation is smaller than flat-plane-column indentation and cracking for Victors indentation occurs from the inner part of specimen difficult to measure crack length, the nanoindentation facture test for flat-plane-column indentation is more effective.

A high strength aluminum alloy bolt (A7050, T7 temper treatment) has been developed by the authors. The bolt has a small grain size in the whole area of the bolt because of the large equivalent strain followed by thermo-mechanical treatment. As the bolt made of A 7050 has a risk of stress corrosion cracking, each grain should be strengthened the grain inside than the grain boundary in order to improve the stress corrosion cracking resistance. It has been confirmed that the nano-indentation hardness at each grain inside increased with the increasing equivalent strain by thermo-mechanical treatment processing.
Metal/Ceramic structures have many attractive properties, with great potential for applications that demand high stiffness, as well as chemical and biological stability, thermal and electrical insulation. They are currently in use for mechanical and thermal protection in cutting tool and engine parts. With all their great advantage, ceramics suffer from one major problem they are brittle, and are especially susceptible to cracking from surface contacts. Delamination at the interfaces with adjacent layers is a particularly disturbing problem, and can cause premature failure of a composite system. so determination of adhesive properties of coating is one of the most important problems for the extension of the use of coated materials. In this work, mechanical characteristics of Interface of ceramic/Metal composites are evaluated by means of hardness test, indentation test apparent interfacial toughness and bonding strength test. The interface indentation test provides a relation between the applied load(P) and the length of the crack(a) created at the interface between the coating and the substrate.
Corrosion of reinforcement and deterioration of concrete short the lifetime of reinforced concrete structure and affect the safety of the structure. In particular, the corrosion of reinforcement causing the inner pressure of the interface between the concrete and reinforcement is known to significantly contribute to the premature deterioration of concrete structure. Several attempts have been made to predict the cracking time of the concrete structure. However, problems such as the lack of reproducibility of concrete tests and non-uniformity of materials have hampered thess kinds of studies. Thus, the mechanism of the concrete cracking due to reinforcement corrosion is in the way. This studymeasured the mechanical properties of corrosion products using the nano-indentation test method. Likewise, the critical thickness of corrosion products for the cracking of concrete cover was investigated using the finite element and experimental methods.
Boiler is one of the most important utilities providing steam to turbine in order to supply mechanical energy in thermal power plant. It is composed of thousands of tubes for high efficient heat transfer. The material for boiler tubes is used in such high temperature and pressure condition as $540^{\circ}C$, 22MPa. The boiler tube material is required to resist creep damage, fatigue cracking, and corrosion damages. 2.25%Cr-1Mo steel is used for conventional boiler tubes, and austenitenite stainless steel is used for higher temperature boiler tubes. But the temperature and pressure of steam in power plant became higher for high plant efficiency. So, the property of boiler tube material must be upgaded to fit the plant property. Several boiler tube material was developed to fit such conditions. X20CrMoV12.1 steel is also developed in 1980's and used for superheater and reheater tubes in supercritical boilers. The material has martensite microstructures which is difficult to evaluate the degradation. In this thesis, degrade the X20CrMoV12.1 steel at high temperatures in electric furnace, and evaluate hardness with Vickers hardness tester and strengths with Indentation tester.

AA7010 is an Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy containing Zr, developed as an alternate to traditional AA7075 alloy owing to their high strength combined with better fracture toughness. It is necessary to improve the corrosion resistance and surface properties of the alloy by incorporating plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) method. AA7010-T7452 aluminum alloy has been processed through the forging route with multi-stage working operations, and was coated with $10{\mu}m$ thick $Al_2O_3$ ceramic aluminina coating using the plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) method. The corrosion, stress corrosion cracking (SCC) and nano-mechanical behaviours were examined by means of potentiodynamic polarization, slow strain rate test (SSRT) and nano-indentation tests. The results indicated that the additional thermomechanical treatment during the forging process caused a fully recrystallized microstructure, which lead to the poor environmental cracking resistance of the alloy in 3.5% NaCl solution, despite the overaging treatment. Although the fabricated PEO coating improved general corrosion resistance, the brittle nature of the coating did not provide any improvement in SCC resistance of the alloy. However, the hardness and elastic modulus of the coating were significantly higher than the base alloy.
A study on adhesion and wear resistance of VC(vanadium carbide) coating on die steels, STD11 and STD61, has been carried out. The VC coating on the die steels was made by immersing them in molten borax bath, a kind of TRD(thermo-reactive deposition and diffusion). Adhesion strength and wear resistance were investigated using scratch test, indentation test and plate-disc test(Ogoshi type) respectively. The influence of sliding distance on the amount of wear has been determined and dominant wear mechanisms has been characterized using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and EDS spectroscopy. The critical adhesion strength($L_c$) between VC coating layer and substrate(STD11) was increased to 60N($L_c$) in the scratch test. In the case of STD61, the strength increased to 24N. The wear resistance of VC coated die steels was excellent because the diffusion layer formed just below the coating layer. The dominant wear mechanism was identified as adhesive wear for VC coating die steels which were worn by combination of cracking and plucking of VC fragments and disc.
The Micromechanics test is new test method which uses comparatively smaller specimen than that required in conventional material tests. There are several methods, such as small-specimen creep test, the continuous indentation test, and small punch(SP) test. Among them, the small punch(SP) test method has been applied to many evaluation fields, such as a ductile-brittle transition temperature, stress corrosion cracking, hydrogen embrittlement, and fracture properties of advanced materials like FGM or MMC. In this study, the small punch(SP) test is performed to evaluate the mechanical properties at high/low temperature from $-196^{\circ}C$ to $650^{\circ}C$ and the material degradation for virgin and aged materials of 9Cr1MoVNb steel which has been recently developed. The ${\Delta}P/{\Delta}{\delta}$ parameter defined a slope in plastic membrane stretching region of SP load-displacement curve decreases according to the increase of specimen temperature, and that of aged materials is higher than the virgin material in all test temperatures. And the material degradation degrees of aged materials with $630^{\circ}C$ -500hrs and $630^{\circ}C$ -1000hrs are $36^{\circ}C$ and $38^{\circ}C$ respectively. These behaviors are good consistent with the results of hardness($H_v$) and maximum displacement(${\delta}_{max}$).
