Barriers to Employment Among Low-Income Mothers in Rural United States Communities

  • This article addresses potential barriers to sustained employment for rural low-income mothers. Drawing from a two panel longitudinal sample of 240 families from the Rural Families Speak project, it examines the extent to which human capital and family factors were related to these mothers' ability to be employed. Comparisons are made between mothers, who over a three-year period, were continuously unemployed, intermittently employed, or stably employed. Many of these rural low-income mothers faced multiple individual and family barriers that impacted their labor force participation. Notably food insecurity, mental health, caring for a young child, housing, and a family history of welfare were associated with less stable employment. The implications for public policy and service delivery are discussed.

한국 노인에서 식품불안정 (food insecurity)이 건강상태 및 식이섭취상태에 미치는 영향 연구: 국민건강영양조사 제 5기 1차년도 (2010) 자료를 이용하여 (Nutritional and health consequences are associated with food insecurity among Korean elderly: Based on the fifth (2010) Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES V-1))

  • 본 연구는 식품불안정이 일반적 특성, 신체적 및 정신적 건강상태, 영양소 섭취량, 한국인영양섭취기준 (KDRIs) 대비 영양소 부족 섭취자의 비율, 식사의 질과 다양성 등에 미치는 영향을 밝히고자 하였다. 이에 제 5기 1차년도 (2010년) 국민건강영양조사 (KNHANES) 자료를 이용하여 65세 이상 노인 939명을 대상으로 하였고, 연구 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 1) 식품불안정은 측정항목의 답변에 따라 총 3개의 그룹인 food secure 군 (FS)과 mildely food insecure 군 (FI 1), moderately/severly food insecure 군 (FI 2)으로 분류하여 분석에 이용하였다. FS군은 33.1%를. 식품불안정군 (FI 1, FI 2)은 67%를 차지하여, 전체대상자의 약 2/3가 식품불안정한 상태에 있는 것을 알 수 있었다. 2) 식품불안정에 따른 일반적 특성에서는 연령, 배우자의 유무, 교육수준, 소득수준에서 유의적인 관련성을 보였다. 식품 공급이 불안정 할수록 평균 연령이 높아졌으며, 교육수준과 소득수준은 낮아졌다. 식품불안정군에서 이혼과 사별을 포함하는 배우자가 없는 경우가 배우자가 있는 경우보다 더 많은 비율을 차지하고 있었는데, 이는 사별을 많이 경험하게 되는 노인에게서 유의미한 결과를 나타내었다. 3) 건강상태를 파악하기 위해 신체적 건강과 정신적 건강을 분석하였는데, 식품불안정 정도가 심각해질수록 건강상태가 좋지 못한 것으로 나타났다. 한국 노인에서는 식품불안정이 신체적 건강보다는 정신적 건강에 더 큰 영향을 미치는 것을 알 수 있었다. 스트레스 인지, 우울 증상 경험, 자살 생각여부를 포함하는 정신적 건강에서 식품불안정 정도가 심각해질수록 그 위험성이 커지는 것을 알 수 있었으며, 특히 식품불안정은 우울 증상을 야기할 뿐만 아니라 우울증의 유지요인으로 작용 하는 것으로 조사되었다. 4) 식품불안정과 영양섭취상태와의 관련성을 파악하기 위해 에너지 비율과 영양소 섭취량, 한국인영양섭취기준 대비 영양소 부족 섭취자의 비율을 조사하였는데, 대부분의 영양소에서 식품불안정군의 절대적인 섭취량이 적었고, 영양섭취기준보다 부족하게 섭취하는 자의 비율이 높았다. 5) 식품불안정군의 식사의 질과 식사의 다양성이 떨어지는 것으로 나타났고, 특히 식사의 다양성을 조사한 총 식품 점수 (DVS)와 식품군 점수 (DDS)에서 식품안정군과 식품불안정군 간의 점수 차이가 큰 것으로 나타났다. 결론적으로 한국 노인에게 식품불안정이 신체적 및 정신적 건강상태를 악화시키고 식이섭취상태에 부정적인 영향을 미치는 요인으로 작용하는 것으로 나타났다.

  • Objectives: This study was performed to investigate the associations of food security with socio-demographic characteristics, nutrient intakes and mental health status among older Korean adults. Methods: This study was conducted using data from the 2008-2010 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). Subjects were 4,451 adults aged 65~98 years. Food security was measured using a self-reported question on food sufficiency of subjects' household. Based on the answers, study subjects were classified into secure, mildly insecure, moderately insecure, and severely insecure groups. Dietary intake was estimated by 24-hour dietary recall. Nutrient intake was assessed by dietary reference intakes (DRI). As for mental health status, the data on mental stress, depression, and suicide ideation were used. Results: Rate of food insecurity in older adults was 14.3%. Old age, being female, low education, low income level, living alone, and discomfort in daily living were more related to food insecurity. Means of nutrient intakes were significantly different according to food security status. Intakes of calcium, potassium, and vitamin $B_2$ were lower than recommended intakes in all groups. Consumption amounts of soy and soybean products, vegetables, mushrooms, fruits, vegetable oils, meats, eggs, seafood, and dairy products were lower in food insecure groups. Mental stress, depression, and suicide ideation were higher in food insecure groups independent of the gender and income level. Conclusions: These present findings suggested that food security is related to mental health as well as nutrition status in older Korean adults. A national system that include food and psychosocial support programs for the elderly should be considered in order to improve the overall health of older Korean adults.

비정규직 근로가 건강에 미치는 영향 (Does Non-standard Work Affect Health?)

  • Objectives : Job insecurity, such as non-standard work, is reported to have an adverse impact on health, regardless of health behaviors. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between non-standard employment and health in Korea. Methods : We analyzed a representative weighted sample, which consisted of 2,112 men and 1,237 women, aged 15-64, from the 1998 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Non-standard employment included part-time permanent, short time temporary and daily workers. Self-reported health was used as a health indicator. Results : This study indicated that women were more likely to report poorer health than men with standard jobs. Of all employees, 20.3% were female manual workers. After adjusting for potential confounders, such as age, education, equivalent income, marital, social and self-reported economic status and health behavior factors, nonstandard employment was found to be significantly associated with poor health among female manual workers (OR, 1.86; 95% CI, 1.24 to 2.79). No significant association was found in other working groups Conclusions : Among female manual workers, nonstandard employees reported significantly poorer health compared with standard workers. This result raises concern as there are increasing numbers of non-standard workers, particularly females.

Nutrition and health challenges among low-income families of young children in the post COVID-19 era: a qualitative study

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: In the United States, one in every 5 children is obese with greater likelihood in low-income households. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic may have accelerated disparities in child obesity risk factors, such as poor dietary intake and increased sedentary behaviors, among low-income families because of financial difficulties, social isolation and other struggles. This study reveals insights into nutrition and health challenges among low-income families of young children in West Texas to better understand needs and develop interventions. SUBJECTS/METHODS: In-depth individual interviews were performed via Zoom among 11 families of children under the age of 3. A semi-structured interview guide was developed to explore 3 areas: changes in (1) dietary intake and (2) sedentary behaviors and (3) families' preferences regarding a parent nutrition education program. Each interview was audiorecorded, transcribed, and coded using MaxQDA software. RESULTS: Eating together as a family become challenging because of irregular work schedules during the COVID-19 pandemic. Most parents stated that their children's dietary habits shifted with an increased consumption of processed foods. Many parents are unable to afford healthful foods and have utilized food and nutrition assistance programs to help feed their families. All families reported that their children's screen time substantially increased compared to the pre-pandemic times. Moreover, the majority of parents did not associate child screen time with an obesity risk, so this area could be of particular interest for future interventions. Meal preparation ideas, remote modality, and early timing were identified as key intervention strategies. CONCLUSIONS: Online nutrition interventions that emphasize the guidelines for child screen time and regular meal routines will be effective and promising tools to reach low-income parents for early childhood health promotion and obesity prevention.

한국 성인의 식품안정성에 따른 연령별 건강 및 영양섭취상태 : 2010~2012년 국민 건강영양조사 자료를 활용하여 (Health and nutritional status of Korean adults according to age and household food security: Using the data from 2010~2012 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey)

  • 본 연구는 2010~2012년 국민건강영양조사에 참여한 20~79세 한국 성인 총 16,595명을 대상으로 식품안정성에 따른 건강 및 영양섭취상태를 살펴보았다. 식품안정성 문항의 답변에 따라 Secure군은 7,256명 (43.7%), Mildly insecure군은 8,764명 (52.8%), Moderately/Securely insecure군은 575명 (3.5%) 이었다. 식품불안정은 나이가 많을수록, 여성일수록, 교육 및 소득 수준이 낮을수록, 독거인 경우, 체질량지수, 현재 흡연율, 운동유무, 직업에 따라 유의한 차이를 보였다. 또한 20~39세 그룹에서 식품불안정성이 높은 군일수록 헤모글로빈은 낮았고, 철결합능은 높았으며, 40~59세 그룹에서 식품불안정성이 높은 군일수록 HDL-콜레스테롤이 낮았으며, 60~79세 그룹에서 식품불안정성이 높은 군일수록 총 콜레스테롤이 높게 측정되었다. 식품안정성이 불안정할수록 20~39세 남자에서는 수면시간이 적었고, 40~59세 남자에서는 우울증상과 자살을 생각해본 비율이 높았고 60~79세 남자는 수면시간이 많았고 스트레스를 많이 느끼고 우울증상과 자살을 생각해 본 대상자의 비율이 높았다. 또한 식품안정성이 불안정한 여성은 40~59세, 60~79세 공통적으로 스트레스를 많이 느끼며 우울증상과 자살생각과 같은 정신건강과 밀접한 관련이 있었다. 영양소 섭취량은 식품불안정이 높은 그룹일수록 전체적인 영양소 섭취량이 낮은 경향을 보였고, 전반적으로 20~39세 그룹에서는 Secure군과 Mildly insecure군의 섭취에는 유의적인 차이가 없는 반면, 40~59세, 60~79세 그룹에서는 세 그룹 간에 유의적인 차이가 있었다. 또한 식품섭취량은 모든 그룹에서 식품불안정이 높은 그룹일수록 전반적인 식품섭취는 감소하는 경향을 보였다. 본 연구 결과 우리나라 성인의 식품안정성은 나이, 성별, 교육, 소득수준, 독거 유무, 직업 특성 및 활동 가능성 여부 등과 관련이 있으며 식품안정성은 식품섭취와 영양소 섭취뿐만 아니라 스트레스, 우울증, 자살생각과 성인의 정신건강과 밀접한 관련이 있었다. 한국 성인 및 노인에게 식품불안정이 신체적 및 정신적 건강상태와 식이섭취상태를 악화시키는 요인으로 나타났다. 본 연구에서는 젊은 성인보다 중년과 노인이 식품불안정에 따른 건강에 더 취약한 것으로 나타나 연령에 따라 식품안정성과 건강을 확보하기 위한 다양한 정책과 영양지원 프로그램이 필요함을 확인하였다.

소득계층별 사교육비 증가에 따른 가구의 소비지출 변화 (The difference of the effects of private tutoring expenditure on the change of consumption structure of households depending on income bracket)

  • 본 연구는 가구의 사교육비 지출과 다른 소비지출과의 관계와 소득계층에 따른 그 차이를 분석하였다. 분석결과, 빈곤층의 사교육비 지출 수준은 중산층과 상층가구에 비해 적을지라도, 가구의 소비지출에서 차지하는 비중은 높게 나타난다. 또한 가구의 사교육비 비중이 증가 또는 감소로 인해 조정되는 소비 비목은 소득계층에 따라 차이를 보인다. 즉 중산층과 상층은 사교육비 비중 변화에 따라 탄력적으로 다른 소비를 조정하는 반면, 빈곤층은 탄력적으로 조정할 수 있는 소비 항목에 제약이 있었다. 이는 빈곤층은 사교육비 지출로 인한 소비지출의 제약으로 인해 생활에 필요한 충분한 소비를 하지 못할 가능성을 보여준다. 빈곤층 가구에서 사교육비 지출은 가구의 경제적 부담을 증가시킬 뿐만 아니라 가구 소비의 위축을 가져와 실질적인 경제적 안녕을 저해할 가능성이 높다. 따라서 빈곤층의 사교육비 부담과 지출의 증가로 인한 경제적 안녕의 훼손과 불안정한 소비로 인해 발생하는 제반의 문제를 예방하기 위한 사회적 노력이 필요하다.

  • This study was conducted to present the improvement in professional perception among construction workers engaged in domestic construction sites by analyzing the reality of their professional perception. The results are as follows: First, with regard to professional perception of the construction industry, managerial workers made their positive reply to items regarding construction and construction workers but had their negative attitude towards construction as a job and as a recommendable job for others; whereas production workers showed their negative reply to all the items. Second, with respect to factors for construction being firmly regarded as an 3D industry, managerial workers selected 'long working hours' and production workers replied with 'low wages and income insecurity.' Third, as for improvement activities for professional perception of construction, most of construction workers simply knew about activities being performed but expressed their intention to participate in the activities.

국민건강영양조사 식품안정성 측정 도구의 타당도 조사 (Validation of Food Security Measures for the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey)

  • The objective of this study was to assess the reliability and validity of food security measures, which was developed based on the US household food security survey module (US HFSSM) with content validity in the Korean population. The reliability and validity were assessed by internal consistency, construct validity and criterion-related validity. The study included 446 households. Among those, 46.2% were households with children. The proportion of food insecure households was 33.3%. Among those, 35.4% and 64.6% households were food insecure with hunger and without hunger, respectively. The Cronbach's alpha coefficients were 0.84 and the infit value by the Rasch model analysis ranged from 0.68 to 1.43. The scale item response curves by food insecurity severity explained well the nature and characteristics of food security, indicating the highest proportion of "yes" for the items on diet quality, followed by those with diet quantity. The result of criterion-related validity showed that food insecurity status was significantly related in a dose-response manner with the household income level, food expenditure, subjective health state, subjects' educational level. Household food security status was also related to dietary diversity regarding protein foods, fruits and fruit juice, and milk and dairy product. These findings suggest that the food security instrument is reliable and valid and would be used to assess food security status in the Korean population.
