  • In this paper, the incoherent reverberation model based on coupled normal mode method is presented. In the range dependent environment, one way coupled normal mode method is used to calculate the pressure from a source to a scatterer patch and the pressure from a scatterer patch to a receiver. For the computational efficiency, the sound propagation from a source/receiver to the scatterer patch is assumed to occur only in the 2D plane where a source/receiver and scatterer patch are located. For the model verification, problems of the reverberation modeling workshop I and II sponsored by the US office of Naval Research are calculated and the results are compared with the incoherent reverberation model results based on the ray method.

  • We derived the resolution of the modified triangular interferometer and described the analysis about distance measurement using the one. Also, to demonstrate the feasibility of distance measurement using the modified triangular interferometer, the incoherent hologram of a two-point source with depth and its numerical reconstruction were presented. We demonstrated the possibility of the modified triangular interferometer as a three-dimensional display by recording and reconstructing the incoherent hologram of three-dimensional image.

  • Incoherent broadband optical sources have been applied in various areas such as a light source for optical device characterization, fiber-optic gyroscopes$^{(1)}$ , and spectrum sliced light source in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) system$^{(2)}$ . To utilize the inherent low loss in silica optical fibers, various types of incoherent light sources are being developed. Among the light sources, the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) from a rare earth doped fiber has benefits in temperature stability, high output power, low polarization dependence over semiconductor diodes$^{(3)}$ . Recently erbium doped fibers (EDF) have been intensively researched for ASE sources as well as optical amplifiers$^{(4)}$ . The spectrum of ASE from an EDF, however, is limited in the 1520~1560 nm range in conventional configurations. In this letter we described a new broadband ASE source which included both the conventional ASE band of Er$^{3+}$ ion, 1520nm~1560nm and ASE band from Tm$^{3+}$ ions that extends the bandwidth further. For the first time, to the best knowledge of authors, a fiber ASE source based on the energy transfer between Er$^{3+}$ and Tm$^{3+}$ ions in the range of 1460~1550 nm, has been demonstrated using a single 980nm pump laser diode. • In this paper, an incoherent holographic 3D imaging and display system based on the modified triangular and Mach-Zehnder interferometers is optically implemented and some experiments are carried out. Incoherent hologram of a 3D object is generated by using the hologram input system of modified triangular interferometer. Then this complex hologram is reconstructed by using the hologram output system of modified Mach-Zehnder interferometer in which two LCD spatial light modulators and a waveplate are inserted. From the experiment with two point sources having a depth difference of 100 mm each other, it is revealed that each point source can be independently reconstructed at its own focal position from the complex hologram, while both of the bias and conjugate image are simultaneously eliminated at the same time. And in the experiment with the real 3D object of two dices having a depth difference of 30 mm each other, it is also conformed that the bias and conjugate image can be effectively eliminated from the hologram pattern and each 3D dice can be also successfully reconstructed at its own focal position from the complex hologram. These experiment results finally suggest a possibility of implementing a new incoherent holographic 3D imaging and display system using the modified triangular and Mach-Zehender interferometers.

  • In this paper, a new algorithm is proposed for resolving multiple broadband incoherent sources incident on a uniform linear array. The proposed method dose not require any initial estimates for finding the transformation matrix, while the Coherent Signal-Subspace Method(CSM) proposed by Wang and Kaveh requires preliminary estimates of multigroup source location. An effective procedure is derived for finding the enhanced spectral density matrix at the center frequency using signal enhancement approach and then constructing a common signal subspace by selecting a unitary transformation matrix which is obtained via rotation of signal subspace method. The proposed approach is found to provide superior performance relative to that obtained with the CSM method in terms of sample bias of direction-of-arrival estimates.

  • This article presents a brief overview of an important area of neutron scattering: the general principles and techniques of elastic, quasielastic and inelastic scattering from a system composed predominately of incoherent scatterers. The methodology is then applied to the study of water, specifically when it is confined in nanometer-scale environments. The confined water exhibits uniquely anomalous properties in the supercooled state. It also nourishes biological functions, and supports essential chemical reactions in living systems. We focus on recent investigations of water encapsulated in nanoporous silica and carbon nanotubes, hydrated water in proteins and water or hydroxyl species incorporated in nanostructured minerals. Through these scientific examples, we demonstrate the advantages derived from the high sensitivity of incoherent neutron spectroscopy to hydrogen atom motions and hydrogen-bond dynamics, aided by rigorous data interpretation method using molecular dynamics simulations or theoretical modelling. This enables us to probe the inter-/intramolecular vibrations and relaxation/diffusion processes of water molecules in a complex environment.

  • In this paper, the theoretical analysis and the computer simulation of a new modified cochran's triangular interferometer as an incoherent holography, which can eliminate bias and conjugate image problems of the conventional cochran's triangular interferometer, are spresented. In other words, it is theoretically derived by using jones matrix operation that bias and conjugate image can be removed by adding simple optical components including a polarizing beam splitter, wave plates, and linear polarizers to the conventional with a point source, we demonstrated the validity of the suggested method by comparing the modified cocharan's triangular interferometer with the conventional one.

  • We present a spectrum broadening technique to improve the signal-to-noise ratio of spectrum sliced incoherent light sources using the fiber four-wave mixing effect which occurs in a nonlinear loop mirror located at the receiver. The initial transmission channel bandwidth of 0.92 nm was increased to 1.62 nm in the nonlinear loop mirror at the optical receiver, which enhances the signal-to-noise ratio to a desired value. Using this technique, we have demonstrated the transmission of a 2.5 Gb/s NRZ signal with the 0.92 nm bandwidth through a 80 km dispersion-shifted fiber. The measured transmission penalty was less than 0.2 dB at $1{\imes}10^{-10}$ BER.

  • A versatile incoherent optical processing system is developed and analyzed in detail, in which an acousto-optic modulator is used to generate the temporal offset frequency for heterodyning and an optical scanner to process the input object in scanning mode. The operational characteristics of the systems are studied with respect to spatial filtering in terms of the spectral width change of the light source, the temporal offset frequency, and a scanning rate. To enhance the system's capability, two schemes for tuning the system's OTF, structural tuning and defocused object tuning, are also developed and verified with the MTF measurements and computer calculations.
