This study was carried out to investigate the efficacy of electrolyzed water manufactured with or without diaphragm on sterilization and preservation of cut-celery and shelled raw oyster. In cut-celery, total viable cell count and coliform group in the treatment of electrolyzed water were decreased to about 1/200∼1/1,000 level and about 1/100 level comparing non-treated ones. But moisture content, pH, hardness, vitamin C and residual chlorine content were showed a little difference among treatments up to 10 days at 10$^{\circ}C$. L and a color values were gradually increased in all treatments, and color differences($\Delta$E) were remarkable between treatment and untreatment sample. In overall acceptability, cut-celery treated with electrolyzed water showed somewhat higher score than that of other ones treated with tap water and 100 ppm NaClO solution until 5 days of storage. After 48 hours of storage, it was showed that VBN, total viable cell count and coliform count of shelled raw oyster treated with electrolyzed alkali water produced by non-diaphragm system are lower by about 3 mg%, 1∼2 log cycle and 2 log cycle respectively than that of ones treated with sea water. Total viable cell count of shelled raw oyster just after treatment was lower by about 1 log cycle than that of ones treated with sea water, and any significant increment was not found after 24∼48 hours of storage.
Recently, due to the deterioration of watermains and the detachment of scale which is accumulated on the watermain surface, water quality accidents in a water supply network occur frequently. As scale accumulated on watermains is stabilized, it may not cause water quality accidents under the normal operating condition. However, due to water hammer or transient flow caused by the abrupt velocity and/or direction of flow change, it can be detached from the watermain surface resulting in water quality accidents. To prevent these kinds of water quality accidents, it is required to remove scale by watermain cleaning regularly. Many researches about flushing which is the most popular water cleaning method are focused on the desirable velocity criteria and the cleaning condition to accomplish the effect of flushing whereas less amount of research effort is given to develop a method to consider whether the desirable velocity for flushing can be obtained before flushing is performed. During flushing, the major and minor headloss is occurred when flushing water flows through a hydrant or drain valve. These headloss may slow down the velocity of flushing water so that it can reduce the flushing effect. Thus, in this study, we suggest a method to simulate the flow velocity of flushing water using "MinorLoss Coefficient" and "Emitter Coefficient" in EPANET. The suggested method is applied to a sample network and the water supply network of "A" city in Korea to compare the flushing effect between "flushing through a hydrant" and "flushing through a drain valve". In case of "flushing through a hydrant", if the hydraulic condition ocurring from a watermain pipe connecting to the inlet pipe of a hydrant to the outlet of a hydrant is not considered, the actual flowrate and velocity of a flow is less than the simulated flowrate and velocity of a flow. In case of "flushing through a drain valve", the flushing velocity and flowrate can be easily simulated and the difference between the simulated and the actual velocity and flowrate is not significant. Also, "flushing through a drain valve" is very effective to flushing a long-length pipe section because of its efficiency to obtain the flushing velocity. However, the number and location of a drain valve is limited compared to a hydrant so that "flushing through a drain valve" has a limited application in the field. For this reason, the engineer should consider various field conditions to come up with a proper flushing plan.
Ammonia is used in the manufacture of fertilizers, refrigerants, stabilizers and many household cleaning agents. These wide applications resulted in ammonia contamination in water. Ammonia can be removed from water by physical, biological, and chemical methods. Ozonation is effictive in the treatment of water with low concentration of ammonia. This study is undertaken to provide kinetic data for the ozonation of ammonia with or without hydrogen peroxide. The results were as follows; The destruction rate of ammonia increased gradually with the influent hydrogen peroxide concentration up to 0.23 mM and inhibited in the range of 0.23~11.4mM, and the maximum removal rate of ammonia achieved at 0.23mM of hydrogen peroxide, and the overall kinetics was first order. The combination effect of hydrogen and ozone to oxide ammonia in aqueous solution was better than ozone alone. The reacted ammonia was converted completely to nitrate ion.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the bond strength of glassionomer cement against cut dentin surface which was treated with various surface cleaning agents. 48 freshly extracted human 3rd molars were ground flat through the enamel into the dentin using 600 grit silicone carbide paper under a flow of water. The were divided into four groups by the following cleaning procedure on cut dentin surface; Group I : No surface treatment after grinding with 600 grit silicone carbide paper as control group Group II : Surface treatment with 50% citric acid for 30 seconds. Group III : Surface treatment with 37% phosphoric acid for 30 seconds. Group IV : Surface treatment with 10% poly acrylic acid for 30 seconds. The specimens in 4 groups were immersed in distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours before testing after cleanising with water-spray and drying with air. Bond strength was measured with Instron Universal Testing Machine (Autograph S-100, Shimadzu, Kyoto, JAPAN). The results were as follows: 1. The bond strengths of group II, III & IV were not seemed to be shown more significant improvement than a group I. 2. The bond strengths in groups which were treated with 50% citric acid, 37% phosphoric acid and 10% polycrylic acid, were ranked 24.70kg/$cm^2$, 22.02kg/$cm^2$ and 31.13kg/$cm^2$, but its difference was not significant, statistically.

The purpose of this study was to identify the cleaning efficiency of fouled multi-bore hollow fiber membranes after purification of contaminated water. The PSf (polysulfone) based hollow fiber membrane manufactured by Pure & B Tech Co., Ltd. Was used in this study. The antifouling characteristics during the water treatment were studied using bovine serum albumin (BSA) as a model compound and the chemical resistance was evaluated after long-term impregnation in sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) solution and Citric acid to understand the long term stability of the membranes. Water permeability and mechanical strength of the membranes after prolonged chemical exposure was measured to observe the change in mechanical stability and long term performance of the membrane. moreover, the recovery efficiency was also evaluated after chemical enhanced backwashing of a membrane contaminated with bovine serum albumin. The PSf hollow fiber membrane exhibited excellent chemical resistance, and it was confirmed that the efficiency of sodium hypochlorite was high as a result of chemical enhanced backwashing.

Fouling organisms attached to a ship not only greatly increase the resistance of the ship as they grow on the hull but also cause disturbances in local marine ecosystems as they move with the ship. Accordingly, the International Maritime Organization has started discussing the removal of biofouling and evaluation of cleaning performance to prevent the migration of hull-fouling species. In this study, specimens of FRP(Fiber Reinforced Plastic), HDPE(High Density Polyethylene), and CFRP(Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic) materials used for small ship construction were cured in Gyeokpo Port (Jeonlakbuk-do) for about 80 days. Then, attached organism removal experiments were performed using a water jet nozzle. The results show that seaweeds, such as laver, were removed when the distance between the nozzle and the specimen was 1.8 cm and the pressure was 100 bar. Furthermore, it was confirmed that the cleaning of barnacles was possible only when the pressure was 200 bar or more.
Ammonia is used in the manufacture of fertilizers, refrigerants, stabilizers and many household cleaning agents. The wide applications result in ammonia contamination in water. Ammonia can be removed from water by physical, biological, and chemical methods. Especially ozonation is effective in the treatment of water with low concentration of ammonia. Therefore, this study is undertaken to provide kinetic data for the ozonation of ammonia with bromide. The results were as follows; Ammonia oxidized by ozone with bromide catalysis. The denitrification rate of the ammonia increased proportionally to the concentration of bromide, and the overall reaction order was zero. It was also found that the effect of bromide ion concentration on the denitrification can be expressed by Monod type equation and there was no more effect above a proper bromide ion concentration. The reacted ammonia was converted completely to nitrate ion without bromide, but the denitrification of ammonia by ozone was conducted in the presence of bromide.

Water quality has been considered to be one of sanitation standard operating procedures (SSOP) for hazard analysis critical control points (HACCP) application in aquaculture farms. This study was conducted to evaluate a hazard caused by water used in aquaculture farm of rainbow trout. The water quality was analyzed to investigate both physiochemical and bacteriological level in water samples collected from aquaculture farm of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss. No significant difference were observed on water temperature and pH from season to season. However, the levels of dissolved oxygen were decreased as the outside temperature was increased, even if the levels were adequate for aquaculture. Also, other physiochemical analysis including biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD) and suspended solid (SS) revealed that the waters for aquaculture analyzed in this study was suitable for rainbow trout aquaculture. The bacterial analyses were also revealed that the waters for aquaculture were met to both coliform group (<18 MPN/100mL) and viable cell count (<100 CFU/mL). However, some of waste waters from aquaculture farms showed higher levels of BOD and COD than those of waste water standard (<2 ppm), suggesting that regular cleaning of fish tank and precipitation tank is needed.
Seawater desalination is doubtlessly a viable option to supply fresh drinking water. Nevertheless, RO (reverse osmosis) desalination plants in specific areas may be intermittently operated to match the imbalance between water demand and supply. Although a handful of works have been done on other membrane systems, few studies have attempted to mitigate fouling in intermittent RO systems. Accordingly, the objectives of this paper were to examine the effect of the intermittent operation on RO fouling; and to compare four intermittent operation modes including feed solution recirculation, membrane storage in the feed solution, deionized water (DI) recirculation, and membrane storage in DI water. Results showed that intermittent operation reduced RO fouling under several conditions. However, the extents of fouling mitigation were different depending on the feed conditions, foulant types, and membrane lay-up methods. When the feed solution was recirculated during the lay-up, the restoration of the flux was less significant than that by the feed solution feed-up. The use of deionized water during the lay-up was effective to restore flux, especially when the feed solution contains scale-forming salts (CaSO4) and/or colloidal silica.
In the cleaning-water treatment process, the flocculation machine is operated by the V.S motor when the coagulation-facility of the coagulation-process is operated. But after the flocculation machine is stopped by an instantaneous power failure, the transient takes place when the coagulation facility is re-started. To improve the transient state, we developed the reinforcement-circuit which had the function of soft-start and adapted to the field. As a result of this study, we reduced the damage of facilities and had the safety in maintaining the quality of water and improved the efficiency in the maintenance and the management.
