  • The paper first describes the atmospheric correction algorithm for the Ocean Color and Temperature Scanner (OCTS) visible band data used at Earth Observation Center (EOC) of National Space Development Agenrr of japan (NASDA). It uses 10 candidate aerosol models including "Asian dust model" introduced in consideration of the unique feature of aerosols over the east Asian waters. Based on the observations at 670 and 865 nm bands where the reflectance of the water body can be discarded, the algorithm selects a pair of aerosol models that accounts best for the observed spectral reflectances to synthesize the aerosol reflectance in other bands. The paper also evaluates the performance of the algorithm by comparing the satellite estimates of water-leaving radiance and chlorophyll-a concentration with selected buoy- and ship-measured data. In comparison with the old CZCS-type atmospheric correction algorithm where the aerosol reflectance is assumed to be spectrally independent, the OCTS algorithm records factor 2-3 less error in estimating the normalized water-leaving radiances. In terms of chlorophyll-a concentration estimation, however, the accuracy stays very similar compared to that of the CZCS-type algorithm. This is considered to be due to the nature of in-water algorithm which relies on spectral ratio of water-leaving radiances.

  • The optimal design of Water Distribution System (WDS) is used in various ways according to the purpose set by the user. The optimal design of WDS has various purposes, such as minimizing costs and minimizing energy generated when manufacturing pipes. In this study, based on the Modified Hybrid Vision Correction Algorithm (MHVCA), a cost-optimal design was conducted for various WDSs. We also propose a new evaluation index, Best Rate (BR). BR is an evaluation index developed based on the K-mean Clustering Algorithm. Through BR, a comparison was made on the possibility of searching for the optimal design of each algorithm used in the optimal design of WDS. The results of MHVCA for WDS were compared with Vision Correction Algorithm (VCA) and Hybrid Vision Correction Algorithm (HVCA). MHVCA showed a lower cost design than VCA and HVCA. In addition, MHVCA showed better probability of lower cost designs than VCA and HVCA. MHVCA will be able to show good results when applied to the optimal design of WDS for various purposes as well as the optimal design of WDS for cost minimization applied in this study.

  • Water pipeline network in local and metropolitan area is buried underground, by which it is hard to know the degree of pipe aging and leakage. In this study, assuming various sensor combinations installed in the water pipeline network, the optimal algorithm was derived by predicting the water flow rate and pressure through artificial intelligence algorithms such as linear regression and neuro fuzzy analysis to examine the possibility of detecting pipe leakage according to the data combination. In the case of leakage detection through water supply pressure prediction, Neuro fuzzy algorithm was superior to linear regression analysis. In case of leakage detection through water supply flow prediction, flow rate prediction using neuro fuzzy algorithm should be considered first. If flow meter for prediction don't exists, linear regression algorithm should be considered instead for pressure estimation.

  • In order to improve the utilization of irrigation water resources of greenhouse tomatoes, a water-saving irrigation decision-making model based on genetic optimization T-S fuzzy neural network is proposed in this paper. The main work are as follows: Firstly, the traditional genetic algorithm is optimized by introducing the constraint operator and update operator of the Krill herd (KH) algorithm. Secondly, the weights and thresholds of T-S fuzzy neural network are optimized by using the improved genetic algorithm. Finally, on the basis of the real data set, the genetic optimization T-S fuzzy neural network is used to simulate and predict the irrigation volume for greenhouse tomatoes. The performance of the genetic algorithm improved T-S fuzzy neural network (GA-TSFNN), the traditional T-S fuzzy neural network algorithm (TSFNN), BP neural network algorithm(BPNN) and the genetic algorithm improved BP neural network algorithm (GA-BPNN) is compared by simulation. The simulation experiment results show that compared with the TSFNN, BPNN and the GA-BPNN, the error of the GA-TSFNN between the predicted value and the actual value of the irrigation volume is smaller, and the proposed method has a better prediction effect. This paper provides new ideas for the water-saving irrigation decision in greenhouse tomatoes.

  • As a national river remediation project has been completed, this study has a special interest on the capabilities to predict water levels at various points of the Geum River. To be endowed with intelligent forecasting capabilities, the author formulate the neuro-genetic algorithm associated with the short-term water level prediction model. The results show that neuro-genetic algorithm has considerable potentials to be practically used for water level forecasting, revealing that (1) model optimization can be obtained easily and systematically, and (2) validity in predicting one- or two-day ahead water levels can be fully proved at various points.

  • Completer coverage path planning requires the robot path to cover every part of the workspace, which is an essential issue in cleaning robots and many other robotic applications such as vacuum robots and painter robots. In this paper, a novel Water Flowing Algorithm (WFA) is proposed for cleaning robots to complete coverage path planning in unknown environment without obstacles. The robot covers the whole workspace just like that water fills up a container. First the robot goes to the lowest point in the workspace just like water flows to the bottom of the container. At last the robot will come to highest point in the workspace just like water overflows from the container and simultaneously the robot has covered the whole workspace. The computer simulation results show that the proposed algorithm enable the robot to plan complete coverage paths.

  • The use of groundwater in Korea has increased in recent years to the point where its extraction is restricted in times of drought. This work models the groundwater pumping field as a confined aquifer in a simplified simulation of groundwater flow. It proposes a genetic algorithm to maximize groundwater development using a conceptual model of a steady-state confined aquifer. Solving the groundwater flow equation numerically calculates the hydraulic head along the domain of the problem; the algorithm subsequently offers optimized pumping strategies. The algorithm proposed here is designed to improve a prior initial groundwater management model. The best solution is obtained after 200 iterations. The results compare the computing time for five simulation cases. This study shows that the proposed algorithm can facilitate better groundwater development compared with a basic genetic algorithm.

  • In general, manual calibration is commonly used for the stream water quality modelling. Because the manual calibration depends upon the subjectivity and experience of the researcher, it has a problem with the objectivity of the modelling. Thus, the interest about the automatic calibration by the optimization technique is deeply increased. In this study, Influence coefficient algorithm and Genetic algorithm are introduced to develop an automatic calibration model for the QUAL2K that are the latest version of the QUAL2E. Genetic algorithm, used in this study, is very simple and easy to understand but also applicable to any complicated mathematical problem, and it can find out the global optimum solution effectively. The developed automatic calibration model is applied to the Gangneung Namdaecheon. The calibration results about the 11 water quality variables show the good correspondence between the calculated and observed water quality values.

  • In this paper the potential of the Principle Component Analysis(PCA) technique that can be used to detect leaks in water pipe network blocks was evaluated. For this purpose the PCA was conducted to evaluate the relevance of the calculated outliers of a PCA model utilizing the recorded pipe flows and the recorded pipe leak incidents of a case study water distribution system. The PCA technique was enhanced by applying the computational algorithms developed in this study. The algorithms were designed to extract a partial set of flow data from the original 24 hour flow data so that the variability of the flows in the determined partial data set are minimal. The relevance of the calculated outliers of a PCA model and the recorded pipe leak incidents was analyzed. The results showed that the effectiveness of detecting leaks may improve by applying the developed algorithm. However, the analysis suggested that further development on the algorithm is needed to enhance the applicability of the PCA in detecting leaks in real-world water pipe networks.
