A Case Study of Shanghai Tang: How to Build a Chinese Luxury Brand

  • This case focuses on Shanghai Tang, the first truly Chinese luxury brand that appeals to both Westerners and, more recently, to Chinese consumers worldwide. A visionary and wealthy businessman Sir David Tang created this company from scratch in 1994 in Hong Kong. Its story, spanned over almost two decades, has been fascinating. It went from what best a Chinese brand could be in the eyes of Westerners who love the Chinese culture, to a nearly-bankrupted company in 1998, before being acquired by Richemont, the second largest luxury group in the world. Since then, its turnaround has been spectacular with a growing appeal among Chinese luxury consumers who represent the core segment of the luxury industry today. The main objective of this case study is to formally examine how Shanghai Tang overcame its downfall and re-emerged as one the very few well- known Chinese luxury brands. More specifically, this case highlights the ways with which Shanghai Tang made a transitional change from a brand for Westerners who love the Chinese culture, to a brand for both, Westerners who love the Chinese culture and Chinese who love luxury. A close examination reveals that Shanghai Tang has followed the brand identity concept that consists of two major components: functional and emotional. The functional component for developing a luxury brand concerns all product characteristics that will make a product 'luxurious' in the eyes of the consumer, such as premium quality of cachemire from Mongolia, Chinese silk, lacquer, finest leather, porcelain, and jade in the case of Shanghai Tang. The emotional component consists of non-functional symbolic meanings of a brand. The symbolic meaning marks the major difference between a premium and a luxury brand. In the case of Shanghai Tang, its symbolic meaning refers to the Chinese culture and the brand aims to represent the best of Chinese traditions and establish itself as "the ambassador of modern Chinese style". It touches the Chinese heritage and emotions. Shanghai Tang has reinvented the modern Chinese chic by drawing back to the stylish decadence of Shanghai in the 1930s, which was then called the "Paris of the East", and this is where the brand finds inspiration to create its own myth. Once the functional and emotional components assured, Shanghai Tang has gone through a four-stage development to become the first global Chinese luxury brand: introduction, deepening, expansion, and revitalization. Introduction: David Tang discovered a market gap and had a vision to launch the first Chinese luxury brand to the world. The key success drivers for the introduction and management of a Chinese luxury brand are a solid brand identity and, above all, a creative mind, an inspired person. This was David Tang then, and this is now Raphael Le Masne de Chermont, the current Executive Chairman. Shanghai Tang combines Chinese and Western elements, which it finds to be the most sustainable platform for drawing consumers. Deepening: A major objective of the next phase is to become recognized as a luxury brand and a fashion or design authority. For this purpose, Shanghai Tang has cooperated with other well-regarded luxury and lifestyle brands such as Puma and Swarovski. It also expanded its product lines from high-end custom-made garments to music CDs and restaurant. Expansion: After the opening of his first store in Hong Kong in 1994, David Tang went on to open his second store in New York City three years later. However this New York retail operation was a financial disaster. Barely nineteen months after the opening, the store was shut down and quietly relocated to a cheaper location of Madison Avenue. Despite this failure, Shanghai Tang products found numerous followers especially among Western tourists and became "souvenir-like" must-haves. However, despite its strong brand DNA, the brand did not generate enough repeated sales and over the years the company cumulated heavy debts and became unprofitable. Revitalizing: After its purchase by Richemont in 1998, Le Masne de Chermont was appointed to lead the company, reposition the brand and undertake some major strategic changes such as revising the "Shanghai Tang" designs to appeal not only to Westerners but also to Chinese consumers, and to open new stores around the world. Since then, Shanghai Tang has become synonymous to a modern Chinese luxury lifestyle brand.

할인점의 의류PB 상품전략에 관한 연구 (A Research on Private apparel Brand's Product Strategy in Discounted Stores.)

  • 외환위기 이후 급격한 출점과 성장을 해온 대형마트 점포수가 이미 포화상태에 이르렀다는 우려의 목소리도 있지만 신규 출점은 계속적으로 지속될 전망이고 향후 대형마트 성장세는 둔화되나 점포수 등 외형적 성장은 계속되는 가운데 상품 차별화 추구, 고객니즈부응, 고마진획득 등이 지속적으로 가능해져 PB상품 개발이 불황 국면 극복을 위한 저성장 시대의 마케팅 전략의 하나로 자리 잡을 것으로 전망 된다. 또한 국내 3대 대형마트가 의류PB 브랜드를 계속적으로 출시, 확장하고 있는 상황과 운영전략에 대해 연구하고 이를 바탕으로 국내 대형마트의 PB의 성공사례와 문제점을 도출하여 PB의 필요성에 대해 차별화와 고이익 창출을 위한 성공적 전략 방안을 논의 하고자 한다. 본 연구는 대형 마트 PB의 개념과 전략 방안 및 성공사례와 전망을 살펴보고, 현재 전 세계적으로 빠른 성장을 보이는 PB를 단순히 유통업체가 상품을 유통시키면 된다는 제한된 역할 수행에서 벗어나, 제조업체가 지닌 유통 채널에 대한 지배력을 얻을 수 있다는 것을 의미 확장하여 설명하고자 한다. 이미 세계 주요 선진유통업체들은 자사의 상품차별화와 수익성향상을 위해 PB상품 개발에 많은 노력을 쏟고 있으며, 이를 통해 다국적전략 및 외형적 확장, 더불어 높은 재무성과를 창출하고 있는 좋은 사례는 쉽게 접할 수 있다. 따라서 본 연구는 국내 할인점의 포화에 따른 새로운 대안을 위해서는 차별화된 PB운영 전략이 필요함을 국내3개 주요할인점 사례를 통해 제시하였다. 특히 의류 PB상품은 철저한 시장분석과 디자인트렌드 및 고객니즈를 반영한 상품개발로 차별화된 상품력 및 고마진 획득을 통해 출점 정체된 대형마트 지속성장에 새로운 돌파구를 마련하는 좋은 계기를 줄 수 있는 시사점을 제공하여 할인점 출점 한계에 따른 새로운 상품전략 방안을 제시하였다. 본 연구는 할인점 주요 3개사의 경영실적과 세계 몇 개국의 대표적인 PB성공사례를 중심으로 연구하여 국내 전체 소매 산업에 일반화하기에는 다소 무리가 있다. 향후에는 국내에 입점된 다국적 SPA 브랜드와 국내 할인점 PB를 중심으로 비교분석하여 가치를 극대화한 의류PB 확대전략에 대한 추가연구가 필요하다.

농산물 소매유통환경 변화에 따른 국내 산지유통조직 개선방안에 관한 연구: 조직화·규모화·전문화를 중심으로 (A Study 0n the Improvement of the domestic in producing area organizations According to the change retail environment: Focused on organized, scaled, Specialization.)

  • 1996년도의 유통시장개방을 계기로 소매유통 환경이 급변하기 시작하였으며, 이러한 소매유통 환경변화에 대한 대응력을 강화하기 위해 조직화를 통한 규모화가 산지의 중요한 과제로 대두되고 있다. 이에 산지에서는 여건변화에 대응하기 위하여 소규모 개별농가가 조직화를 통해 전문화·대규모화 되어 가고 있고, 품목별·지역별로 특화되어 가는 양상을 보이고 있다. 하지만 소비지 시장에 대한 경쟁력 강화라는 관점에서는 여전히 문제점을 보이고 있는 것이 사실이다. 이러한 문제점의 가장 대표적인 경우가 시장대응상의 산지유통조직의 조직화·규모화 문제이다. 본 연구에서는 선행연구들을 통한 농산물 유통환경 변화에 따른 산지 조직화 배경 및 필요성, 국내 산지유통조직의 현황 및 문제점, 국내·외 산지유통조직 우수사례를 살펴보고, 조직화·규모화를 중심으로 향후 산지유통조직 경쟁력 제고방안을 위한 개선방안에 대해 제시하였다. 연구 결과, 농산물 소매유통환경 변화에 따라 산지유통조직의 경쟁력을 제고하기 위한 개선방안으로 1) 원물수집 체계 다양화를 통한 가동률 향상 및 조직화 강화, 2) 전문화된 품목의 광역연합마케팅 추구를 통한 규모화 실현, 3) 국외 산지유통조직 우수사례인 프랑스 "브레따뉴 청과물 경제위원회"와 같은 관리 운영조직 설치 및 운영, 4) 국내에 적합한 산지유통조직모델 개발을 위한 지원체계 확립 등의 4가지를 제시하였다. 특히 국내 산지의 경우 산지조직화·규모화에 성공한 각종 사례분석을 통해, 조직적 규모화의 과정 속에서 생겨나는 각종 어려움과 그에 대한 극복방식 등을 일반화 시켜가는 노력이 요구된다.

소비자 관여도를 고려한 브랜드 가치 제공, 브랜드 태도, 브랜드 애착의 관계 (Relationship among Brand Value Propositions, Brand Attitude and Brand Attachment considering Consumer Involvement)

  • Purpose - Many variables are needed for brand loyalty such as brand attitude, brand attachment, brand love and brand commitment. Thus, we should manage these all variables successfully for strong and differentiated brand equity. This study aims to identify the process of how the brand value propositions affect the brand attitude and brand attachment. This study specially conceptualizes that not only utilitarian value and hedonic value influence the brand attitude but also hedonic value influences the brand attachment. This study focuses on the moderating role of consumer involvement such as cognitive involvement and affective involvement in the causal relationships among brand value propositions, brand attitude, and brand attachment. Research design, data, and methodology - The five hypotheses were proposed and tested in this study. Three hypotheses were about the relationship among the brand value propositions(utilitarian value and hedonic value), brand attitude, and brand attachment. The other two hypotheses were about the moderating effect on consumer involvement in the causal relationships among brand value propositions, brand attitude, and brand attachment. Research data were collected from the students of universities located in Daejeon-Si and Chungchungnam-Do. For the purpose of test the hypotheses empirically, the 208 responses were used. We utilized SPSS18.0 for statistical analysis such as reliability test, factor analysis, and regression analysis. Results - The results show that the utilitarian value and hedonic value have influence on the brand attitude positively. The results also show that the hedonic value has influence on the brand attachment positively. We found that there is a moderating effect on the cognitive involvement in the relationship between the utilitarian value and the brand attitude. However, there is no moderating effect on the affective involvement in the relationship between the hedonic value and brand attachment. In Summary, 4 of 5 hypotheses in this study were supported and 1 hypothesis was not supported. We should identify the reason why the hypothesis 5, the moderating effect of the affective involvement in the relationship between the hedonic value and brand attachment, was rejected in this empirical analysis. Conclusions - Both the utilitarian value and the hedonic value that propose a brand are important for brand attitude. Specially, the hedonic value is important for brand attachment. Companies should provide the consumers with both the utilitarian value and the hedonic value in a balanced way for their favorable brand attitude and strong brand attachment. In the retail industry, the balance between the utilitarian value and the hedonic value is important in that there are many product brands and store brands providing consumers with various benefit and values. Also, there are possibilities that the causal relationships among brand value propositions, brand attitude and brand attachment are moderated by consumer involvement such as cognitive involvement and affective involvement. Companies should understand and consider consumer involvement for their efficient and effective brand management decision making.

대형마트 상생품목제도 영향의 지역적 평가 (Regional Assessment of the Effect of the Win-Win Item Agreements)

  • Purpose - It has been argued that the regulations restricting entry and opening hours of General Super Markets and Super Super Markets have not been as effective as expected. In contrast, the win-win item scheme that appeared recently has the advantage that it could raise the effectiveness of the system in that win-win items are in principle resigned on the basis of bilateral agreements. This study analyzes the win-win item agreement made between Homeplus at Hap-jung and small traditional markets to examine the practical effectiveness of the win-win item scheme. While existing literature studying the regulatory effects have concentrated on the restrictions around store entry or opening hours of large retailers, it can be said that there have been few empirical studies on the effect of win-win items agreement with large retailers. Research design, data, and methodology - Homeplus at Hap-jung made a win-win items agreement with nearby small traditional market traders in 2013. In accordance with this voluntary agreement, Homeplus started by limiting its sales to 15 win-win items. The survey was conducted through one-on-one interviews, April 14 to May 2, 2014, by a professional public opinion research agency. The interviews were targeted at small business retailers in the nearby traditional market. We divided the traditional markets near Homeplus at Hap-jung where the win-win item agreement was achieved into two groups, win-win item agreement markets and non win-win item agreement markets, to compare the performance difference between the two groups. Results - To determine the change in sales of the 15 win-win items, we examined the performance difference between the two groups using two criteria (compared with similar items, and compared to sales volume a year ago). The results show that the individual sales of win-win items in the win-win item agreement markets are more likely to increase than in the non win-win item agreement markets. Total sales volume of individual stores in the agreement markets also showed a more significant increase compared to a year ago than those in non win-win item agreement markets. Conclusions - Contrary to the existing retail regulations that have one-sided and uniform characteristics, it can be pointed out that the win-win item scheme has the effect of increasing the success of the system itself because it is done on the basis of mutual agreement between General Super Markets and traditional markets. The empirical results of this study can be said to support this conjecture. For the successful settlement of a win-win items agreement, the following points should be reviewed. First, it requires a great effort from the selection process of win-win items in order to improve the effectiveness of the agreement. Second, the existing General Super Markets customers should be introduced to the traditional markets or small shops to increase the sales of win-win items. Therefore, voluntary effort is essentially required from the traditional markets to engage customers.

  • 최근 COVID-19 바이러스로 인한 대유행으로 우리 사회와 환경, 그리고 기업의 역할과 평가가 변화하고 있다. 기업은 사회적 책임 활동과 함께 투명한 경영활동의 ESG와 같은 비재무적 요소가 평가의 기준이 되고 있다. 이에 따라 본 논문에서는 기업에서의 ESG 개념과 ESG 평가의 중요성과 기업과의 상관관계를 살펴보고, 향후 기업의 ESG 관리 필요성에 대해 살펴보기로 한다. 이를 위해 ESG경영을 가장 잘 실천하고 있는 유통업계의 기업 가운데 하나인 CU를 선정하여 CU의 ESG경영에 대해 깊이 있는 사례연구를 수행하였다. CU는 E, S, G의 전 분야로 나뉘어 전 분야가 적극적으로 활동하며 변화하는 환경과 사회적 요구에 유연하게 대처하고 있었다. 특히 CU가 가장 집중하는 환경관리가 고객들의 실제 소비 증가에 힘입어 성공적인 성과를 거둔 것으로 확인되었다. CU 의 ESG 경영 활동은 현재 진행 중이며 앞으로의 향후 과제이기도 하다. 본 논문을 통하여 ESG 경영을 선도하는 기업으로서 고민과 노력, 실천활동을 공유하고 사회적 책임을 다하는 기업으로 성장하는 과정을 살펴보고 타기업들에게도 실무적인 도움을 줄 수 있을 것으로 기대할 수 있을 것이다.

GAP 인증인삼 현황과 4P 전략 (Situations of GAP certified ginseng and 4P's strategies)

  • Ginseng in Korea has not only the big production value but also till a good reputation from overseas in the name of 'Korea Ginseng'. Having spread rapidly nationwide from 2000 year, its production keeps on increasing but its consumption becomes lazy and its price is also falling down because of comsumer's concern about mainly overusing pesticide for ginseng. In order to cope with this problem, the government introduced the GAP certification system to ginseng in 2006 to reflect consumer's needs for food safety. This system will be a good opportunity to promote ginseng consumption dramatically. In this aspect it is very important to know how well this system is established and how ginseng farmers build marketing strategies to draw new wind in the market. This study was carried out to look over the GAP certified ginseng system and show its marketing strategies using 4P's(product, place, promotion and price). The main results are as follows. GAP ginseng system currently has some weaknesses such as lack of systematic certification management and after-service, nonrealistic certification fee and poor linkage from production to consumption. In the marketing mix strategies, product strategy suggests that the most desirable appearance be transplanted ginseng filled with branch roots and 4 to 5 year-ginseng, and it is necessary to choose multi-brand strategy divided for present into for self-sufficiency and family brand strategy by use if its brand enlarges to processed products in the future. In the place strategy, 3 stages like 'producer group' - 'GAP certified facility' - 'sales shop' are based as the physical marketing channel according to traceability, and connected with giant retail market and environment friendly stand, and if its sales volume enlarges, it should be considered the GAP ginseng specialized marketplace which is a type of chain store. In the promotion strategy, the promotion of government level is necessary at first and producer alliances require the promotion targeting at the group of women under 40 with differentiation from price, quality, and safety. In the price strategy, the early stage-high price strategy which sets 20~25% higher for self-sufficiency and 30~35% for present is desirable.

  • 최근 4차 산업혁명으로 인한 새로운 기술들의 등장은 사회전반은 물론 소매업에도 큰 변화를 일으켰다. 소매업에서는 새로운 기술 기반의 무인점포가 등장하여 소비자들의 소비행태를 변화시키고 있다. 특히 2019년 12월 등장한 COVID-19로 인한 전 세계적인 팬데믹은 사회적 위험을 높였고 이로 인해 비대면 시대가 시작되면서 무인점포에 대한 관심이 더욱 높아지고 있다. 본 연구는 무인점포 이용자가 지각하는 혜택 요인(지각된 유용성, 지각된 경제성, 지각된 즐거움, 상대적 이점)과 희생 요인(지각된 위험, 기술성)이 지각된 가치를 매개로 지속적 이용의도에 미치는 영향을 검정한다. 또한 COVID-19로 인한 사회적 위험이 무인점포를 통한 소비과정에서 어떠한 역할을 하는지를 실증분석을 통해 검정하는 연구이다. 본 연구는 비대면시대에 무인점포의 활성화를 위한 전략적 시사점을 제공하는 것을 목적으로 한다.본 연구는 연구의 가설검정을 위해 무인점포 이용자를 대상으로 총 293부의 데이터 수집하였다. 또한 수집된 데이터는 SPSS 21.0과 AMOS 21.0 통계프로그램을 사용하여 분석하였다. 연구의 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 무인점포의 지각된 혜택(지각된 유용성, 지각된 경제성, 지각된 즐거움, 상대적 이점)은 모두 지각된 가치에 유의한 정(+)의 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 무인점포의 지각된 희생(지각된 위험, 기술성)은 모두 지각된 가치에 유의한 부(-)의 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 무인점포에 대한 지각된 가치는 지속적이용의도에 유의한 정(+)의 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 끝으로 COVID-19로 인한 사회적 위험은 무인점포에 대한 지각된 희생이 지각된 가치에 영향을 미칠 때 조절역할을 하는 것으로 나타났다.

커피전문점의 VMD 구성요인이 브랜드자산과 재구매의도에 미치는 영향 (An Influence of VMD configuration factors of Coffee shops on Brand equity and Repurchase intention)

  • Purpose - This study identifies relationships amongst repurchase intentions, brand equity, and preference by applying VMD of fashion retail stores. The results would help coffee shop owners and coffee makers in devising an appropriate strategy for successfully managing coffee shops. Research design, data, methodology - The VMD model of a coffee shop includes harmony, trend, and attractiveness, while brand equity encompasses brand awareness, perceived quality, and brand image. In this study, the VMD factors of coffee shops, brand equity, and brand preference, are shown as independent variables, while repurchase intention is shown as the dependent variable. The study aims to ascertain the extent of the influence configuration factors of a coffee shop have on brand equity, brand preference, and repurchase intention. Regression analysis was used to verify the mediating effects of brand preference on brand equity and repurchase intention. The measurement items were already deemed as reliable and valid in the previous study, but some modifications were made for the purposes of this study. Questionnaires were distributed to 550 consumers on a national scale, and 517 consumers amongst these were finally used as a sample for analysis using the SPSS 17.0 statistical program. Results - First, amongst the VMD configuration factors of a coffee shop, trend, and attractiveness have a positive impact on brand equity (brand awareness, perceived quality, and brand image). Second, brand equity has a positive effect on brand preference. Third, brand preference has a positive effect on repurchase intention. Fourth, brand preference plays the role of a mediator in measuring the impact of brand awareness and brand image on customers' repurchase intentions. Conclusions - The theoretical implications can be summarized as follows. First, this study proposes a theoretical basis that can be adapted to the VMD configuration factors of a coffee shop by identifying the relationship between brand equity and coffee shops. This study applies the VMD factors to the coffee shops and presents a new research model by examining the relationships amongst VMD components of coffee shops: brand equity, brand preference, and repurchase intention. Second, it clearly establishes the relationship between brand equity and brand preference by identifying the mediating effects of brand preference, given that brand equity has a positive impact on repurchase intention. The practical implications are as follows. First, development of brand equity and management can be important components for coffee shops in determining that the VMD configuration factors of coffee shops have an impact on brand equity. Second, amongst the VMD configuration factors, attractiveness and trend have a positive influence on choosing coffee shops, therefore store atmosphere should be attractively designed, while the menu and interiors should complement each other and be reviewed periodically to conform to the latest trend.
