In a shotcrete support system, the cooperation of the ground and the shotcrete lining makes it possible to transfer the shear stress to the shotcrete lining, which is dedicated to form a stable structure. In this study, a homogeneous model ground with constant strength was produced by using gypsum and the tunnel was excavated with a top heading method under the definite initial stress. During the excavation, the stress in the ground around the tunnel and the deformation of shotcrete lining were measured, The tensile stress was generated in tangential direction in the ground near the tunnel and in the shotcrete lining due to tunnel excavation. This shows the unified behavior of the ground and shotcrete lining, which is the most typical characteristic of the shotcrete support. As a result, the rates of in-situ stress during the excavation at a top boundary line was 9% and at top arch heading 15%. It was 48% right after excavating the heading and 94% before cutting the bench.
The coal wall, gob-side backfill, and gangues in goaf, constitute the support system for Gob-side entry retaining (GER) in coal mines. Reasonably allocating and utilizing their bearing capacities are key scientific and technical issues for the safety and economic benefits of the GER technology. At first, a mechanical model of GER was established and a governing equation for coordinated bearing of the coal-backfill-gangue support system was derived to reveal the coordinated bearing mechanism. Then, considering the bearing characteristics of the coal wall, gob-side backfill and gangues in goaf, their quantitative design methods were proposed, respectively. Next, taking the No. 2201 haulage roadway serving the No. 7 coal seam in Jiangjiawan Mine, China, as an example, the design calculations showed that the strains of both the coal wall and gob-side backfill were larger than their allowable strains and the rotational angle of the lateral main roof was larger than its allowable rotational angle. Finally, flexible-rigid composite supporting technology and roof cutting technology were designed and used. In situ investigations showed that the deformation and failure of surrounding rocks were well controlled and both the coal wall and gob-side backfill remained stable. Taking the coal wall, gob-side backfill and gangues in goaf as a whole system, this research takes full consideration of their bearing properties and provides a quantitative basis for design of the support system.
A scaled model test was performed to evaluate the stability of subway twin tunnels excavated in the sedimentary rocks with subhorizontal bedding planes. The size of studied tunnel was 6.2 m×6.8 m and pillar width was 4 m. The anisotropic model test specimen was manufactured with the modeling materials suitable for in-situ rocks by way of dimensional analysis. Fracture and deformation behaviors of tunnels according to applied loads were investigated through the biaxial compression test. As the load was increased on the model specimen, the first crack occurred in the middle part of the pillar across twin tunnels and the gradual fractures progressed at crown and floor of twin tunnels. All the cracks in pillar were generated along the existing bedding planes so that they were found to be the main cause of the pillar failure. In addition, the test results were verified by numerical analysis on the experimental conditions using FLAC ubiquitous joint model. The distribution of plastic regions obtained from numerical analysis were in general agreement with test results, confirming the reliability of the scaled model test conducted in this study.
A 3-ply clad metal consisting of aluminum and copper was fabricated by roll bonding process and the microstructures and mechanical properties of the roll-bonded and post-roll-bonding heat treated Cu/Al/Cu clad metal were investigated. A brittle interfacial reaction layer formed at the Cu/Al interfaces at and above $400^{\circ}C$. The thickness of the reaction layer increased from $12{\mu}m$ at $400^{\circ}C$ to $28{\mu}m$ at $500^{\circ}C$. The stress-strain curves demonstrated that the strength decreased and the ductility increased with heat treatment up to $400^{\circ}C$. The clad metal heat treated at $300^{\circ}C$ with no indication of a reaction layer exhibited an excellent combination of the strength and ductility and no delamination of layers up to final fracture in the tensile testing. Above $400^{\circ}C$, the ductility decreased rasxpidly with little change of strength, reflecting the brittle nature of the intermetallic interlayers. In Cu/Al/Cu clad heat treated above $400^{\circ}C$, periodic parallel cracks perpendicular to the stress axis were observed at the interfacial reaction layer. In-situ optical microscopic observation revealed that cracks were formed in the Cu layer due to the strain concentration in the vicinity of horizontal cracks in the intermetallic layer, promoting the premature fracture of Cu layer. Vertical cracks parallel to the stress axis were also formed at 15% strain at $500^{\circ}C$, leading to the delamination of the Cu and Al layers.
When structures are constructed in ground with poor bearing capacity, deformation of ground may induce foundation settlements and cracks of structures. Recently, high pressure jet grouting is widely used to improve the engineering properties of such foundation. Sometimes, the grouting columns are built in the ground by jet grouting method. They are used as in -situ piles to increase the bearing capacity of existing foundation. In this paper, as for the grouting columns built in ground by high pressure jet grouting with double tube rod, the effects on reinforcement and bearing capacity of ground are investigated. A series of laboratory tests has been performed on the specimens sampled from the grouting columns and a pile load test has been performed on a grouting column. The test results show that high pressure jet grouting has a sufficient effect on reinforcement of ground and restraint of settlement of structure.
This paper describes the performance of ground improvement project using prefabricated vertical drains of condition, in which approximately 10m dredged fill overlies original soft foundation layer in the coastal area composed of soft marine clay with high water content and high compressibility. From field monitoring results, excessive ground settlement compared with predicted settlement in design stage developed during the following one year. In order to predict the final consolidation behavior, recalculation of consolidation settlements and back analysis using observed settlements were conducted. Field monitoring results of surface settlements were evaluated, and then corrected because large shear deformation occurred by construction events in the early stages of consolidation. To predict the consolidation behavior, material functions and in-situ conditions from laboratory consolidation test were re-analyzed. Using these results, height of additional embankment is estimated to satisfy residual settlement limit and maintain an adequate ground elevation. The recalculated time-settlement curve has been compared with field monitoring results after additional surcharge was applied. It might be used for verification of recalculated results.

It is very urgent to research the proper recycling method of marine dredged soil as construction material for environmental conservation. Couple of developed countries have been lots of related researches on recycling of marine dredged soil for marine environmental conservation. This is highly imperative in our country. A small-scaled model test for underground pipe has been conducted on the use of controlled low strength materials with marine dredged soil. The flexible pipe, which is called PVC, was used. Four different testing materials, such as natural sand, insitu-soil, sand-CLSM with marine dredged soil and insitu-soil CLSM with marine dredged soil, were used. The vertical and lateral displacement of pipe with CLSM is one tenth of common granular materials. Also, the use of CSLM showed lower lateral and vertical pressure than that of common granular materials. The main reason is the effect of cement hardening of CLSM. This could increase of the stiffness of pipe with backfill materials. In this study, the data presented show that marine dredged soil and in-situ soil can be successfully used in CLSM and reduce the deformation and earth pressure on flexible pipe.
In this study, the stress-strain response and the cracking behaviors of ITO film on a PET substrate are investigated. The cracking behaviors of ITO thin films deposited on a thermoplastic semi-crystalline polymer developed for flexible display applications was investigated by means of tensile experiments equipped with an electrical measurement apparatus and an in-situ optical microscope. Electrical resistance increased gradually in the elastic-to-plastic transition region of the stress strain curves and cracks formed. Numerous cracks were found in this region, and the increase of the resistance was linked to the cracking of ITO thin films. Upon loading, the initial cracks perpendicular to the tensile axis were observed at about 1% of the total strain. They propagated to the entire sample width as the strain increased. The spacing between the horizontal cracks is thought to be determined by the fracture strength and the thickness of the ITO film as well as by the interfacial strength between the ITO and PET. The effect of the strain rate on the cracking behavior was also investigated. The crack density increased as the strain increased. The spacing between the horizontal cracks (perpendicular to the stress axis) increased as the strain rate decreased. The increase of the crack density as the strain rate decreased can be attributed to the higher fraction of the plastic strain to the total strain at a given total strain. The higher critical strain for the onset of the increase in the resistance and the crack initiation of the ITO/PET with a thinner ITO film (300 ohms/sq.) suggests a higher strength of the thinner ITO film.
Long-term performance of polymer under constant sustained load has been the main research focus, which created a need for the accelerated test method providing proper lifetime assessment. Cycling fatigue loading is one of the accelerated test method and has been of great interest. Microstructure change of high density polyethylene under cyclic fatigue loading and creep was examined utilizing a tensile device specially designed for creep and fatigue test and also can be attachable to the X-ray diffractometer. In this way, the crystal morphology change of polyethylene under creep and cyclic fatigue load was successfully monitored and compared. Despite the marked differences in macroscopic deformation between the creep and cyclic fatigue tests, crystal morphology such as crystallinity, crystal size, and $d$-spacing was as nearly identical between the two test cases. Specimens pre-deformed to different strains, i.e., before yield point (BYP), at yield point (YP) and after yield point (AYP), however, showed markedly different changes in crystal morphology, especially between AYP and the other two specimens.
The localized shear and the slip lines are easily observed in elastic-brittle-plastic rock. After yielding, the strength of the brittle rock suddenly drops from the peak value to the residual value, and there are slip lines which divide the macro rock into numbers of elements. There are slippages of elements along the slip lines and the displacement field in the plastic region is discontinuous. With some restraints, the discontinuities can be described by the combination of two smooth functions, one is for the meaning of averaging the original function, and the other is for characterizing the breaks of the original function. The slip lines around the circular opening in the plastic region of an isotropic H-B rock which subjected to a hydrostatic in situ stress can be described by the logarithmic spirals. After failure, the deformation mechanism of the plastic region is mainly attributed to the slippage, and a slippage parameter is introduced. A new analytical solution is presented for the plane strain analysis of displacements around circular openings. The displacements obtained by using the new solution are found to be well coincide with the exact solutions from the published sources.
