  • Alumina composite was fabricated by introducing tetragonal ZrO2 in alumina composite of $\alpha$-alumina reinforced with in-situ formed La-$\beta$-aluminate (LaAl11O18). The powder mixture of composition (100-x)[88 Al2O3+(La2O3+11 Al2O3)]+x vol% ZrO2 was prepared with x from 0 to 40. Dense composites fabricated by hot-pressing exhibited bending strength up to 1200 MPa. The gain growth inhibiting effect of ZrO2 grains and La-$\beta$-aluminate platelets, and possibly the stress-induced phase transformation of ZrO2 have resulted in the high bending strength. The fracture toughness of the composite also increased up to 8.5 MPa.m1/2. The enhancement in toughness can be explained by transformation and microcrack toughening of ZrO2 and by crack deflection and bridging of La-$\beta$-aluminate platelets and ZrO2.

  • The evaluation of the reliable strength and deformation characteristics of weathered granite masses is very important for the design of geotechnical structure under working stress conditions. Various types of laboratory test such as triaxial compression test can be performed to determine the strength parameters. However, it is very difficult to obtain the representative undisturbed samples on the site and also the rock specimen cannot represent rock mass including discontinuities, fracture zone, etc. This study aims to investigate the strength and deformation characteristics of granite masses corresponding to its weathering and develop a practical strength parameter evaluation method using the results of PMT. To predict weathering intensity and strength parameters of the weathered granite masess in the field, various laboratory tests and in-situ tests including field triaxial test and PMT are carried out. Based on the results of weathering index tests, the classification method is proposed to identify the weathering degree in three groups for the weathered granite masses. Using the analytical method based on the Mohr-Coulomb failure criteria and the cavity expansion theory, the strength parameters of rock masses were evaluated from the results of PMT. It shows that weathering intensity increases with decreasing the strength parameters exponentially. The strength parameters evaluated with the results of PM almost coincide with the results of field triaxial test.

  • To characterize the site specific properties of a study area for high-level radioactive waste disposal research in KAERI, the several geological investigations such as surface geological surveys and borehole drillings were carried out since 1997. Especially, KURT (KAERI Underground Research Tunnel) was constructed to understand the further study of geological environments in 2006. As a result, the first geological model of a study area was constructed by using the results of geological investigation. The objective of this research is to construct a hydrogeological model around KURT area on the basis of the geological model. Hydrogeological data which were obtained from in-situ hydraulic tests in the 9 boreholes were estimated to accomplish the objective. And, the hydrogeological properties of the 4 geological elements in the geological model, which were the subsurface weathering zone, the log angle fracture zone, the fracture zones and the bedrock were suggested. The hydrogeological model suggested in this study will be used as input parameters to carry out the groundwater flow modeling as a next step of the site characterization around KURT area.

  • Characterizations of Excavation Damage Zone (EDZ), which is hydro-mechanical degrading the host rock, are the important issues on the geological repository for the spent nuclear fuel. In the DECOVALEX 2019 project, Task G aimed to model the fractured rock numerically, describe the hydro-mechanical behavior of EDZ, and predict the change of the hydraulic factor during the lifetime of the geological repository. Task G prepared two-dimensional fractured rock model to compare the characteristics of each simulation tools in Work Package 1, validated the extended three-dimensional model using the TAS04 in-situ interference tests from Äspö Hard Rock Laboratory in Work Package 2, and applied the thermal and glacial loads to monitor the long-term hydro-mechanical response on the fractured rock in Work Package 3. Each modelling team adopted both Finite Element Method (FEM) and Discrete Element Method (DEM) to simulate the hydro-mechanical behavior of the fracture rock, and added the various approaches to describe the EDZ and fracture geometry which are appropriate to each simulation method. Therefore, this research can introduce a variety of numerical approaches and considerations to model the geological repository for the spent nuclear fuel in the crystalline fractured rock.

  • Bending and tensile properties of 2D cross-ply C/C composites with processing heat treatment temperature (HTT) are evaluated. C/C composites used are made from two types of PAN based T700 and M40 carbon fibers with phenolic resin as carbon matrix precursor. Both the types of composites are heat treated at different temperatures (ranging from 750 to $2800^{\circ}C$) and characterized for bending and tensile properties. It is observed that, real density and open porosity increases with HTT, however, bulk density does show remarkable change. The real density and open porosity are higher in case T-700 carbon fiber composites at $2800^{\circ}C$, even though the density of M40 carbon fiber is higher. Bending strength is considerably greater than tensile strength through out the processing HTT due to the different mode of fracture. The bending and tensile strength decreases in both composites on $1000^{\circ}C$ which attributed to decrease in bulk density, thereafter with increase in HTT, bending and tensile strength increases. The maximum strength is in T700 fiber based composites at HTT $1500^{\circ}C$ and in M40 fiber based composites at HTT $2500^{\circ}C$. After attending the maximum value of strength in both types of composite at deflection HTT, after that strength decreases continuously. Decrease in strength is due to the degradation of fiber properties and in-situ fiber damages in the composite. The maximum carbon fiber strength realization in C/C composites is possible at a temperature that is same of fiber HTT. It has been found first time that the bending strength more or less 1.55 times higher in T700 fiber composites and in M40 fiber composites bending strength is 1.2 times higher than that of tensile strength of C/C composites.

  • In the years, the concern about high-strength concrete which is new material has been heightened as a result of active research and development. Recently, as the building structure has been being bigger, higher, longer and more specialized, the demand of material with high-strength concrete for building has been increasing. The demand of high -strength concrete is expected to increase with expansion of usage about the complex concrete structures such as bridge structure as well as nuclear plants, underground structures, hydraulic structures and arctic area sturctures. In this research, silica-fume was used as an admixture in order to get a high-strength concrete. Water/binder ration was limited no more than 18 percent and the amount of unit cement was increased. In this study, a number of trial in concrete mix was carried out to get optimal mix design, and the target slump with $10{\pm}2cm$ was set for in-situ construction. High-strength concrete with cylinder strength of 1,200kgf/$cm^2$ in the 28-days was produced and tested. The static test was carried out to measure the ultimate load, the initial load of flexural and diagonal cracking, crack patterns, fracture modes. The load versus strain and load versus deflection relations were obtained form the static test. The test results were compared with the shear strengths predicted by the equations of ACI code 318-89 and orther researchers. Based on the test results, shear strength equation of reinforced concrete beam using high strength concrete was proposed. Form an evaluation of the results of this experimental investigation, it was concluded that shear strength after diagonal tention cracking diminished with the increase in compressive strength for beams.

  • An optical televiewer is a geophysical logging device that produces continuous high-resolution full-azimuth images of a borehole wall using a light-emitting-diode and a complementary metal-oxide semiconductor image sensor to provide valuable information on subsurface discontinuities. Recently, borehole imaging logging has been applied in many fields, including ground subsidence monitoring, rock mass integrity evaluation, stress-induced fracture detection, and glacial annual-layer measurements in polar regions. Widely used commercial borehole imaging logging systems typically have limitations depending on equipment specifications, meaning that it is necessary to clearly verify the scope of applications while maintaining appropriate quality control for various borehole conditions. However, it is difficult to directly check the accuracy, implementation, and reliability for outcomes, as images derived from an optical televiewer constitute in situ data. In this study, we designed and constructed a modular fractured borehole model having similar conditions to a borehole environment to report unprecedented results regarding reliable data acquisition and processing. We investigate sonde magnetometer accuracy, color realization, and fracture resolution, and suggest data processing methods to obtain accurate aperture measurements. The experiment involving the fractured borehole model should enhance not only measurement quality but also interpretations of high-resolution and reliable optical imaging logs.

  • It is suggested that the service life of the continuous welded rail(CWR) is estimated by the relationship between the rail surface irregularity according to the accumulated passing tonnage and bending fatigue of welded part in CWR. In this study, based on the results of bending fatigue tests of rail and results of measuring tests in situ of rail bending stress, this study estimated the bending fatigue life of welded rail in concrete track, adopting a Haibach's rule. The bending fatigue life of CWR considered the rail surface irregularity, train speed and the S-N curve by types of rail welding. In addition, this study estimated it for the fracture probability 1%, 0.1%, 0.01%. Therefore, this study proposed bending fatigue life of CWR in concrete track.

  • A scaled model test was performed to evaluate the stability of subway twin tunnels excavated in the sedimentary rocks with subhorizontal bedding planes. The size of studied tunnel was 6.2 m×6.8 m and pillar width was 4 m. The anisotropic model test specimen was manufactured with the modeling materials suitable for in-situ rocks by way of dimensional analysis. Fracture and deformation behaviors of tunnels according to applied loads were investigated through the biaxial compression test. As the load was increased on the model specimen, the first crack occurred in the middle part of the pillar across twin tunnels and the gradual fractures progressed at crown and floor of twin tunnels. All the cracks in pillar were generated along the existing bedding planes so that they were found to be the main cause of the pillar failure. In addition, the test results were verified by numerical analysis on the experimental conditions using FLAC ubiquitous joint model. The distribution of plastic regions obtained from numerical analysis were in general agreement with test results, confirming the reliability of the scaled model test conducted in this study.

  • $MoSi_2$/W composites were fabricated by vacuum hot press at $1600^{\circ}C$ under 30MPa for 3 hrs. The effects of the amount of tungsten in the composites was explained in terms of the microstructure and mechanical properties. Although tungsten was mainly substituted to Mo atoms forming a complete solid solution of (Mo.W).Si, (x= 1, 5, y=2, 3). the grain size of composites became smaller with the increase of tungsten added. Vickers hardness was increased with the increase of tungsten content due to the solid-solution hardening. On the other hand, toughness of composites decreased sharply by increasing the amount of tungsten. Optimum tungsten amount was determined to be a 10 vol% of composite. Indentation fracture toughness was calculated to be 4.5MPa\sqrt{m}$ in this composites, compared with $2.7MPa\sqrt{m}$ in pure $MoSi_2$.
