  • In this paper, site response analyses were performed based on equivalent linear technique using the shear wave velocity profiles of 162 sites collected around the Korean peninsula. The site characteristics, particularly the shear wave velocities and the depth to the bedrock, are compared to those in the western United States. The results show that the site-response coefficients based on the mean shear velocity of the top 30m ($V_{S30}$) suggested in the current code underestimates the motion in short-period ranges and overestimates the motion in mid-period ranges. Also the current Korean code based on UBC is required to be modified considering site characteristics in Korea for the reliable estimation of site amplification. From the results of numerical estimations, new regression curves were derived between site coefficients ($F_a$ and $F_v$) and the fundamental site periods, and site coefficients were grouped based on site periods in the regions of shallow bedrock. The standard deviations of the proposed method was reasonable compared to site classification based on $V_{S30}$. Finally, new site classification system is recommended based on site periods for regions of shallow bedrock depth in Korea.

  • The investigation of ecological characteristics of Lycoris radiata was carried out in flooding (site I), half flooding (site II) and dry stands (site III). Seasonal change of air temperature showed similar patterns and that of light intensity showed quite difference among three L. radiata stands. Seasonal change of soil water content showed a great difference among three L. radiata stands. The study area was dominated by Pinus densiflora, P. thunbergii and L. radiata communities. The number of bulb in 1. radiata increased in September with bulb formation and decreased in January. Bulb weight in L. radiata was different from each site. The numbers of blossom were 23, 13 and 9, respectively in site I, II and III. The length of wreath were 17.0, 13.0 and 11.0cm, respectively, the length of stamen were 7.0, 6.4 and 6.5 cm, respectively and the length of stalk were 60.0, 45.0 and 42.0 cm, respectively in site I, II and III. The leaf of L. radiata developed rapidly in site I with sufficient water supply and lower light intensity, the number and the length of rootlets increased considerably in site III with insufficient water supply and higher light intensity, and the ecological characteristics in site II was intermediate between site I and site III. There was no great difference between the numbers of rootlets in site I and site II, which were due to sufficient water supply in two stands.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between post - employment job satisfaction and both short-term (4-12 weeks) and long-term (12+weeks) on-site training. For this purpose, 405 graduates who had completed on-site training (205 short-term, 200 long term) during the school year were surveyed. The results of the comparative analysis of both short-term and long-term on-site training participants are as follows: In both short-term and long-term on-site training, it was found that on-site performance during the school year did not directly affect post-employment job satisfaction. In the case of short-term on-site training participants, job match and organizational commitment were found to have no mediating effect on the correlation between on-site training performance and job satisfaction. On the other hand, in the case of long-term on-site training participants, the analysis showed that job match and organizational commitment had mediating effects on the correlation between on-site training performance and job satisfaction. These effects are not solely attributable to differences in duration of training; the differences in operating systems and the degree of preparation derived from these systems also affect the level of on-site training for students, businesses, and schools. This paper summarizes these findings and suggests the following improvement plans for on-site training in the future: First, short-term on-site training is required to establish a systematic basis in order to enhance students' preparedness level. Second, both short-term and long-term on-site training should improve the skills and field understanding for students' majors through systematic quality management during the training period. Third, it is necessary for universities to increase expectations and quality of short-term on-site training for all involved while simultaneously reducing the gap between educational goals and practice in this field.

  • This study was carried out to estimate the effect of forest fire on physical and chemical properties of soil The forest fire was in April 1995 at Kongju of Chungnam. Soil samples were collected at 0~5cm, 5~10cm, and 10~20cm soil depths in September 1998 from the burned and unburned sites. Soil organic matter concentrations at 0~5cm and 5~10cm soil depths were significantly greater in unburned site than in burned site. Soil concentrations were greater in unburned site than in burned site at all soil depths. Cation exchange capacity was significantly higher in unburned site than in burned site at 0~5cm soil depth. There were no differences in available soil P, exchangeable soil K, Ca, and Mg, and pH of soil between burned and unburned sites. Soil water content at 0~5cm soil depth was significantly greater in unburned site than in burned site. Bulk density at 0~5cm soil depth was significantly higher in burned site than in unburned site. Forest fire had an adverse effect on physical and chemical properties of soil in this study, Burning of vegetation and forest 리oor organic matter in burned site may reduce organic matter supply to soil and increase soil erosion. Consequently, forest fire may have adverse influence on long-term site productivity.

  • Korea's first commercial nuclear power plant at Kori site was permanently shut down in 2017 and is currently in transition stage. Preparatory activities for decommissioning such as historical site assessment, characterization, and dismantling design are being actively carried out for successful D&D (Dismantling and Decontamination) at Kori site. The ultimate goal of decommissioning will be to ensure the safety of workers and residents that may arise during the decommissioning of nuclear facilities and, thereby finally returning the site to its original status in accordance with the release criteria. Upon completion of decommissioning, the resident's safety at a site released will be assessed from the evaluation of dose caused by radionuclides expected to be present or detected at the site. Although the U.S. commercial nuclear power plants with decommissioning experience use different site release criteria, most of them are 0.25 mSv/y. In Korea, both the unrestricted and restricted release criteria have been set to 0.1 mSv/y by the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission. However, since the dose is difficult to measure, measurable concentration guideline levels for residual radionuclides that result in dose equivalent to the site release criteria should be derived. For this derivation, site reuse scenario, selection of potential radionuclides, and systematic methodology should be developed in planning stage of Kori site decommissioning. In this paper, for calculation of a preliminary site-specific Derived Concentration Guideline Levels (DCGLs) for the Nuclear Power Plant site, a novel approach has been developed which can fully reflect practical reuse plans of the Kori site by taking into account multiple site reuse scenarios sequentially, thereby striking a remarkable distinction with conventional approaches which considers only a single site scenario.

  • Seasonal changes of nitrogen fixation and growth characteristics of Melilotus suaveolens population under different light conditions were quantitatively analyzed during growting period. Height growth of M. suaveolens population was promoted after April and the shade (site 2) showed 10-20% increase of height growth in compared with that of sunny (site 1). Seasonal changes of biomass were in creased after March, the biomass at site 1 attained 78.5% that of site 2 in May. Chlorophyll content was maintained high value from March to April but, Chlorophyll content of leaf at site 1 was decreased 11.7% compared to that of site 2 in May. The nitrogen content of each organ of M. suaveolens showed higher value in March and then decreased, the high nitrogen contents of reproductive organ were achieved at the flowering stage at site 1. The root nodule of M. suaveolens population appeared in March and showed maximum value in early June and decreased remarkably after July, the amount of nodule formation of M. suaveolens at site 2 showed higher than that of site 1. The nitrogen fixation activity of root nodule of M. suaveolens initiated with shoot growth and showed maximum value in mid April, and attained second peak in early June and then decreased after July. The total nitrogen fixation of the plant showed higher value at site 2 than that of site 1. From the overall results, M. suaveolens showed increased growth under half-shady, well ventilated barren soil than fertile sunny site.

  • In the companion paper (I - Database and Site Response Analyses), site-specific response analyses were performed at more than 300 domestic sites. In this study, a new site classification system and design response spectra are proposed using results of the site-specific response analyses. Depth to bedrock (H) and average shear wave velocity of soil above the bedrock ($V_{S,Soil}$) were adopted as parameters to classify the sites into sub-categories because these two factors mostly affect site amplification, especially for shallow bedrock region. The 20 m of depth to bedrock was selected as the initial parameter for site classification based on the trend of site coefficients obtained from the site-specific response analyses. The sites having less than 20 m of depth to bedrock (H1 sites) are sub-divided into two site classes using 260 m/s of $V_{S,Soil}$ while the sites having greater than 20 m of depth to bedrock (H2 sites) are sub-divided into two site classes at $V_{S,Soil}$ equal to 180 m/s. The integration interval of 0.4 ~ 1.5 sec period range was adopted to calculate the long-period site coefficients ($F_v$) for reflecting the amplification characteristics of Korean geological condition. In addition, the frequency distribution of depth to bedrock reported for Korean sites was also considered in calculating the site coefficients for H2 sites to incorporate sites having greater than 30 m of depth to bedrock. The relationships between the site coefficients and rock shaking intensity were proposed and then subsequently compared with the site coefficients of similar site classes suggested in other codes.
