The aim of this study was to investigate the alteration of lumbar spine and trunk postures on different load-carrying types and amounts under static loading. Two load-carrying types(unilateral carrying: UC vs. bilateral carrying: BC) and four different loads(0, 5, 10, and 15 kg) were randomly tested in this study. Carrying a heavy bag would affect human body posture, specifically lumbar spine curvature, which is considered as one of sources of back problems. Previous studies have not paid attention to the approach of the multisegment model of the lumbar spine and trunk. This study separated two compartments of trunk segment(the lumbar and thorax) in the analysis. The multisegment model of the lumbar spine in addition to Helen-Hayes marker set was used. Eight motion analysis cameras and a force plate were utilized. Ten male subjects(mean mass, $70.6{\pm}3.97$ kg; mean height, $178{\pm}4.18$ m) having no musculoskeletal disease participated in this study. We analyzed trunk angles in three anatomical planes and the spinal curvature in sagittal and frontal planes. Increased loading in both UC and BC significantly resulted in increases in trunk forward lean but only UC induced increases in trunk lateral lean. In addition, increased loading in BC produced flatten lumbar curvature in sagittal plane. As far as coupling motion, subjects tended to use axial rotation of the lumbar spine in transverse plane in response to increased UC loading. Finally, it is concluded that the increased static loading in UC rather than in BC tends to causes combined alterations of the spinal postures(sagittal and transverse planes together), which would be vulnerable to improper mechanical stresses on the spine.

Curved steel-concrete composite box girder has been widely adopted in urban overpasses and ramp bridges. In order to investigate its mechanical behavior under complicated and combined bending, shear and torsion load, two large-curvature composite box girders with interior angles of 25° and 45° were tested under static hogging moment. Based on the strain and deflection measurement on critical cross-sections during the static loading test, the failure mode, cracking behavior, load-displacement relationship, and strain distribution in the steel plate and rebar were investigated in detail. The test result showed the large-curvature composite box girders exhibited notable shear lag in the concrete slab and steel girder. Also, the constraint torsion and distortion effect caused the stress measured at the inner side of the composite beam to be notably higher than that of the outer side. The strain distribution in the steel web was approximately linear; therefore, the assumption that the plane section remains plane was approximately validated based on strain measurement at steel web. Furthermore, the full-process non-linear elaborate finite element (FE) models of the two specimens were developed based on commercial FE software MSC.MARC. The modeling scheme and constitutive model were illustrated in detail. Based on the comparison between the FE model and test results, the FE model effectively simulated the failure mode, the load-displacement curve, and the strain development of longitudinal rebar and steel girder with sufficient accuracy. The comparison between the FE model and the test result validated the accuracy of the developed FE model.
Traffic flow capacity of some old road bridges is insufficient due to limited deck width. In such cases bridge deck widening is a common solution. For multi-girder reinforced concrete (RC) bridges it is possible to add steel-concrete composite girders as the new outermost girders. The deck widening may be combined with bridge strengthening thanks to thickening of the existing deck slab. Joint action of the existing and the added parts of such bridge span must be ensured. It refers especially to the horizontal plane at the interface of the existing slab and the added concrete layer as well as to the vertical planes at the external surfaces of the initially outermost girders where the added girders are connected to the existing bridge span. Since the distribution of the added concrete is non-uniform in the span cross-section the structure is particularly sensitive to the added concrete shrinkage. The shrinkage induces shear forces in the aforementioned planes. Widening of a 12 m long RC multi-girder bridge span is numerically analysed to assess the influence of the added concrete shrinkage. The analysis results show that: a) in the vertical plane of the connection of the added and the existing deck slab the longitudinal shear due to the shrinkage of the added concrete is comparable with the effect of live load, b) it is necessary to provide appropriate longitudinal reinforcement in the deck slab over the added girders due to tension induced by the shrinkage of the added concrete.
Numerical studies were carried out to develop the moment magnifier method for long-term behavior of flat plates, subjected to combined in-plane compressive and transverse loads. Nonlinear finite element analyses were performed for the numerical studies. Through the numerical studies, the long term behavior of the flat plate subjected to uniform or nonuniform floor load was investigated, and creep effects on the degradation of strength and stiffness of the slabs were examined. As a result, the creep factor was implemented to describe the creep effect on the flat plate. The moment magnifier method using the creep factor was developed for long-term behavior of flat plates. Also, the design examples were shown for the verification of the proposed design method.

Interfacial cracks bonded with dissimilar transversely isotropic piezoelectric media that are subjected to combined anti-plane mechanical and in-plane electrical loading are analyzed. The problem is formulated using complex function theory, from which the Hilbert problem is derived. By solving the Hilbert problem, the general form solution is obtained. Using this solution, closed-form solutions for one or two finite cracks as well as a semi-infinite crack are obtained, for the problem in which one concentrated mechanical and electrical load is imposed on the crack surface. This solution could be used as a Green's function to generate solutions to other problems with the same geometry but different loading conditions.

The analysis and design procedure of intermediate support strut for the innovative prestressed scaffolding (IPS) system was presented in this paper. The stability check of intermediate support strut is required as the behavior of the strut system is similar to that of the built-up column. The computer analysis model of the support strut was constructed for in-plane and out-of-plane buckling analysis, and the design of the support strut was performed. Using the eigenvalue for the buckling load and the member forces of support strut under design earth pressure, the effective buckling length was estimated. The allowable axial and bending stresses were calculated considering the effective buckling length. The combined stresses due to these axial forces and bending moment were estimated to be satisfied the safety condition of the intermediate support strut.
In terms of district heating operation, efficient production and supply of heat by alleviating the peak load at a specific time require an application technology that can solve the inconvenience of the user and the difficulties of the supplier. In this study, a 78 ℃ class PCM heat storage tank suitable among the technologies that can solve these problems was manufactured and applied to the hot water supply facility for apartments in district heating users. As a result of the application of this system, it was confirmed that the supply temperature was constant to the user compared to the existing supply method. In addition, it was confirmed that the reduction of the peak load due to load equalization reduced the heat supply margin of 10% in the existing heat supply facility. And the construction cost of the new heat supply facility and the construction cost of heat users is decreased by 5% and 10%, respectively.
In this study, a numerical procedure based on the finite element method for materially and geometrically nonlinear analysis of reinforced and prestressed concrete slender columns with arbitrary section subjected to combined biaxial bending and axial load is developed. In order to overcome the low computer efficiency of the conventional section integration method in which the reinforced concrete section is divided into a large number of small areas, an efficient section integration method is used to determine the section tangent stiffness. In this method, the arbitrary shaped cross section is divided into several concrete trapezoids according to boundary vertices, and the contribution of each trapezoid to section stiffness is determined by integrating directly the trapezoid. The space frame flexural theory is utilized to derive the element tangent stiffness matrix. The nonlinear full-range member response is traced by an updated normal plane arc-length solution method. The analytical results agree well with the experimental ones.

Single-layer latticed domes, which ore consisted of slender linear elements, are able to transmit external loads to the structure by in-plane forces, therefore spatial structures can be constructed with the merit of its own lightweight. But, as external load reaches to any critical level at which each member has not material nonlinearity, the single-layer latticed dome shows unstable phenomenon. In particular, pin-connected single-layer latticed domes have much complicate unstable phenomena that are combined with nodal buckling and member buckling. Furthermore, single-layer latticed domes are very sensible to the initial imperfection which occurred inevitably in construction. In this study, we are going to grasp the characteristics of instability for the latticed dome by finite element method considering geometrical nonlinearity.
This paper addresses the finite strip formulations for the stability analysis of viscoelastic composite plates with variable thickness in the transverse direction, which are subjected to in-plane forces. While the finite strip method is fairly well-known in the buckling analysis, hitherto its direct application to the buckling of viscoelastic composite plates with variable thickness has not been investigated. The equations governing the stiffness and the geometry matrices of the composite plate are solved in the time domain using both the higher-order shear deformation theory and the method of effective moduli. These matrices are then assembled so that the global stiffness and geometry matrices of a moderately thick rectangular plate are formed which lead to an eigenvalue problem that is solved to determine the magnitude of critical buckling load for the viscoelastic plate. The accuracy of the proposed model is verified against the results which have been reported elsewhere whilst a comprehensive parametric study is presented to show the effects of viscoelasticity parameters, boundary conditions as well as combined bending and compression loads on the critical buckling load of thin and moderately thick viscoelastic composite plates.
