  • In this paper, the effect of the gap in the ground plane on the electromagnetic interference (EMI) is analyzed quantitatively. Because of a lot of advantages compared to other numerical techniques, the FDTD (finite difference time domain) is applied to the EMI effect modeling. The analyzed model is the simplified PCB (printed circuit board) which has a microstrip and ground plane. The inductance induced by the gap is modeled and calculated by gridding the whole PCB based on the FDTD algorithm. When external cables are attached to the PCB, the common-mode current is induced along the attached cable and the resulting electric field strength is calculated and presented along with the FCC and CISPR EMI limits. The results show that the radiated field strength highly depends on the size of the ground plane gap. The numerical simulation results can be used as a reference in the practical PCB design with the ground plane gap.

  • Over two decades, many researchers have performed studies on strength size effects in composite laminates under tensile and flexural loads. It is well known that there is a tendency for the strength of fibre-reinforced composites to decrease with increasing specimen size. Under compressive load, however, little work has been done on the effect of specimen size to failure strength. This is due to the fact that compressive testing of composite is very difficult. In this paper, the effect of the test specimen size on the compressive strength of composites containing open hole was considered using T300/924C, $>[45/-45/0/90]_{3S}$. For sizing test specimens, the in-plane scaling method is used i.e., the change of two- dimensional specimen area in specimen width and gauge length. The results clearly show that there is a hole size effect in the finite width plates. In addition, the specimens which have the same a/W(hole diameter/specimen width) exhibit a tendency of size effect. In contrast, test results of the unnotched specimens did not show a clear strength size effect.

  • In this paper, the effect of a finite substrate on the mutual coupling of a pair of microstrip patch antennas along the H -plane is investigated. The mutual coupling of a pair of microstrip patch antennas can be reduced using the interference effect due to the phase difference by a variety of routes of the surface wave. In the case of the substrate with $\varepsilon_r$=10 and thickness of 3.2 mm, the mutual coupling is reduced by 4.85 dB on the substrate size with the strong mutual coupling, while the mutual coupling is reduced by 34.28 dB on the substrate size with the weak mutual coupling when the distance between the antenna centers is varied from 0.5 $\lambda_0$ to 1.0 $\lambda_0$. In the case of optimization substrate size, the decreasing rate of the mutual coupling with the increase of the distance between the antenna centers is very large. Good agreements between the image method and full wave simulation results are obtained.

  • In this paper, to reduce the resonant length of patch, microstrip patch antenna of linear polarization which is suppressed at two radiation edges is designed and fabricated at the frequency of 1.575 GHz. The result is like that the resonant length of patch is 45 mm and the length reduction effect is 43.8 % when it is compared with that(80 mm) of plane type. The gain is 4.4 dBd and -3 dB beamwidths are 112$^{\circ}$ and 66$^{\circ}$ in the E-plane and H-plane, respectively. Also, to reduce the size of patch, microstrip patch antennas those are suppressed at four radiating comers are designed and fabricated at the same frequency in the linear and circular polarization, respectively. For linear polarization, at the 1.2 of width/length(W/L) ratio, the patch area is 53 mm $\times$ 63.6 mm and the size reduction effect is 56.1 % when compared with that(80 mm $\times$ 96 mm) of plane type. The gain is 4.3 dBd and the -3 dB beamwidths are 120$^{\circ}$ and 78$^{\circ}$ in the E-plane and H-plane, respectively. For circular polarization, the patch size(54.2 mm $\times$ 61.5 mm) is reduced by 47.2 % than that(76 mm $\times$ 83 mm) of plane type. -3 dB beamwidth of horizontal polarization in the z-x plane and vortical polarization in the y-z plane are 108$^{\circ}$ and 93$^{\circ}$, respectively and this means the increasement in both planes by 52$^{\circ}$ and 27$^{\circ}$ than those of plane type. The maximum gain is 2.5 dBd in the horizontal polarization in the z-x plane. Axial ratio is 1.5 dB at 1.575 GHz and the 2 dB axial ratio bandwidth(ARBW) is 20 MHz(1.3 %).

  • In order to investigate the smoke movement in three dimensional room fires, the center fire, wall fire and corner fire plume in different sized fires were studied experimentally by rectangular pool fire using methanol as a fuel. As the fire size became larger for the center fires placed at the center of the floor, the air flow rate entrained through the opening, average hot layer temperature, flame angle deflected backwards and mean flame height was observed to increase. On the other hand, as the fire size became smaller, the neutral plane height in the door and time reached steady-state was observed to decrease. The average hot layer temperature, mean flame height and doorway neutral plane height obtained from comer fire were higher than those produced by wall fires and center fires. The simple model for describing the effect of walls on the mean flame height was presented. It was shown that the model provides a good description of the present measurements, when used with the assumption by Hansell(1993), that the increase of the average flame height is equal to the ratio of the open to the total perimeters of the trays. Also the two models for predicting the effects of walls on the mean flame height were presented. These models overestimated the measured values of the mean flame height above fuel trays close to a wall and in a corner by approximately 19-26%, respectively.

  • In this paper, we have reported two interesting flow effects arising in the TRFGE sequence using water flow phantom. First, we have shown that the TRFGE sequence is indeed not affected by "in-flow" effect from the unsaturated spins flowing into the imaging slice. Second, the enhancement of "in-plane flow" signal in the readout gradient direction was observed when the TRFGE sequence was used without flow compensation. These two results have many interesting applications in MR imaging other than fMRI. Results obtained were also compared with the results obtained by the conventional gradient echo(CGE) imaging. Experiments were performed at 4.7T MRI/S animal system (Biospec, BRUKER, Switzerland). A cylindrical phantom was made using acryl and a vinyl tube was inserted at the center(Fig. 1). The whole cylinder was filled with water doped with $MnCl_2$ and the center tube was filled with saline which flows in parallel to the main magnetic field along the tube. Tailored RF pulse was designed to have quadratic ($z^2$) phase distribution in slice direction(z). Imaging parameters were TR/TE = 55~85/10msec, flip angle = $30^{\circ}$, slice thickness = 2mm, matrix size = 256${\times}$256, and FOV= 10cm. In-flow effect : Axial images were obtained with and without flow using the CGE and TRFGE sequences, respectively. The flow direction was perpendicular to the image slice. In-plane flow : Sagittal images were obtained with and without flow using the TRGE sequence. The readout gradient was applied in parallel to the flow direction. We have observed that the "in-flow" effect did not affect the TRFGE image, while "in-plane flow" running along the readout gradient direction enhanced the signal in the TRFGE sequence when flow compensation gradient scheme was not used.

  • In the present study, the nonlocal strain gradient theory is used to predict the size-dependent buckling and post-buckling behavior of geometrically imperfect nano-scale piezo-flexomagnetic plate strips in two modes of direct and converse flexomagnetic effects. The first-order shear deformation plate theory is used to analyze analytically nano-strips with simply supported boundary conditions. The nonlinear governing equations of equilibrium and associated boundary conditions are derived using the principle of minimum total potential energy with consideration of the von Kármán-type of geometric nonlinearity. A closed-form solution of governing differential equation is obtained, which is easily usable for engineers and designers. To validate the presented formulations, whenever possible, a comparison with the results found in the open literature is reported for buckling loads. A parametric study is presented to examine the effect of scaling parameters, plate slenderness ratio, temperature, the mid-plane initial rise, flexomagnetic coefficient, different temperature distributions, and magnetic potential, in case of the converse flexomagnetic effect, on buckling and post-buckling loads in detail.

  • In the previous work, the effect of blending with two kinds of low density polyethylene (LDPE) on physical and electrical properties have been investigated. From the results, blending with two kinds of LDPE was effective method on changing the morphology of LDPE and improving the high-field characteristics in high temperature region. Especially, it suggested that the F$\_$BImp/ was associated with the changes of the crystal size. In this work, the relationship between the morphology and the high-field characteristics of blended LDPE was discussed. In addition, the physical and electrical properties of blended LDPE with extrusion treatment were investigated. The two groups of specimen were prepared; Group 1 was prepared by passing 1 time through the extruder included in the film-blowing process, and Group 2 was prepared by passing 2 times through the extruder. From the relation between the crystal size which was perpendicular to the (020) plane and the F$\_$BImp/ of blended LDPE, it was confirmed that the F$\_$BImp/ was associated with the changes of crystal size due to the blending. Moreover, the F$\_$BImp/ of blended LDPE in Group 2 was higher than that of blended LDPE in Group 1. The crystal size of the (020) plane became smaller according to the extrusion treatment. These results suggest that the uniform distribution and dispersion of crystalline occurred due to the extrusion treatment and the morphological change due to the extrusion treatment influenced on the electrical properties of blended LDPE.

  • The Holographic Particle Velocimetry system can be a promising optical tool for the measurements of three dimensional particle velocities. One of inherent limitations of particle holography is the very long depth of field of particle images, which causes considerable difficulty in the determination of particle positions in the optical axis. In this study, we introduced three auto-focusing parameters corresponding to the size of particles, namely, Correlation Coefficient, Sharpness Index, and Depth Intensity to determine the focal plane of a particle along the optical axis. To investigate the suitability of the above parameters, the plane image of dot array screens containing different size of dots was recorded by diffused illumination holography and the positions of each dot in the optical axis were evaluated. In addition, the effect of particle position from the holographic film was examined by changing the distance of the screen from the holographic film. All measurement results verified that the evaluated positions using suggested auto-focusing parameters remain within acceptable range of errors. These research results may provide fundamental information for the development of the holographic velocimetry system based on the automatic image processing.
