  • This paper presents the principle, dynamics modeling and control, hardware implementation, and flight test result of a hybrid-type unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The proposed UAV was designed to provide both hovering and fixed-wing type aerodynamic flight modes. The UAV's flight mode transition was achieved through the attitude transformation in pitch axis, which avoids a complex rotor tilt mechanism from a structural and control viewpoint. To achieve this, a different navigation coordinate was introduced that avoids the gimbal lock in pitch singularity point. Attitude and guidance control algorithms were developed for the flight control system. For flight test purposes, a quadrotor attached with a tailless fixed-wing structure was manufactured. An onboard flight control computer was designed to realize the navigation and control algorithms and the UAV's performance was verified through the outdoor flight tests.

  • Recently, studies have been carried out to develop unmanned Micro Air Vehicles(MAVs) that can search and monitor inside buildings during urban warfare or rescue operations in hazardous environments. However, existing fixed-wing and rotary-wing MAVs cannot travel at extremely low or high speeds, hover in place, or change directions instantly. This has lead researches to search for other flight methods that could overcome those drawbacks. Insect flight principles and its applications to MAVs are being studied as an alternative flight method. To take flight, insects flap and rotate their wings. These wing motions allow for high maneuverability flight such as hovering, vertical take off and landing, and quick acceleration and deceleration. This paper proposes a method for designing a mechanism that reproduces hovering insect flight, the basis for all other forms of insect flight. The design of a mechanism that can reproduce the motion that causes maximum lift is proposed, the required specifications are calculated, and a method for reproducing hovering insect flight with a single motor is presented. Also, feasibility of the design was confirmed by simulation.

  • The characteristics of ballistic missiles are changing rapidly but studies have mostly focused on fragmentary flight trajectory analysis estimating the changing characteristics of some types, while there is a lack of research on comprehensive and efficient ballistic search, detection and prediction for missiles including the new types that have been gaining attention lately. This paper analyzes the flight trajectory characteristics of ballistic missiles at various ranges considering flight path angle adjustment, specific impulse and drag force with altitude based on the optimized equations of motion reflecting the parameters of North Korea's general and new types of ballistic missiles. The flight trajectory characteristics of representative ranges for each ballistic missile were analyzed by adjusting the flight path angle in the minimum energy method, lofted method, and depressed method. In addition, High value target can attacked by ballistic missiles considering flight path angle adjustment at various points. It's expected to be used to Threat Evaluation and Weapon Allocation, and deployment of defense systems by interpreting the analysis of the latest Iskander-class ballistic missiles and the new multiple rocket launcher.

  • An advanced method of Relaxed Static Stability (RSS) is utilized for improving the aerodynamic performance of modem version supersonic jet fighter aircraft. The flight control system utilizes RSS criteria in both longitudinal and lateral-directional axes to achieve performance enhancements and improve stability. Standard CLDA (Control Law Design and Analysis) process is provided that reduce the development period of the flight control system. In addition, if this process is employed in developing flight control laws, it reduces the trial and error development and verification of control laws. This paper details the design process of developing a flight control law for the RSS aircraft, utilizing military specifications, linear and nonlinea, analysis using XMATH and ATLAS(Aircraft, Tim Linear and Simulation), handling quality tests using the HQS (Handling Quality Simulator), and real flight test results to verify aircraft dynamic flight responses.

  • This paper presents a neural network based adaptive control approach to a reconfigurable flight control law that keeps handling qualities in the presence of faults or failures to the control surfaces of an aircraft. This approach removes the need for system identification for control reallocation after a failure and the need for an accurate aerodynamic database for flight control design, thereby reducing the cost and time required to develope a reconfigurable flight controller. Neural networks address the problem caused by uncertainties in modeling an aircraft and pseudo control hedging deals with the nonlinearity in actuators and the reconfiguration of a flight controller. The effect of the reconfigurable flight control law is illustrated in results of a nonlinear simulation of an unmanned aerial vehicle Durumi-II.

  • The longitudinal flight parameters of a light airplane are estimated from flight test data by use of the output error method. The reliability of the flight test measurement is examined in engineering judgment, scatter and Cramer-Rao bound, which turns out to be satisfactory with minor defects. Estimated parameter values are validated by comparing the simulated responses with the ones from actual flight tests. The FTD(Flight Training Device) of a light airplane turns out to satisfy the qualification of FAA Level 5 FTD in longitudinal motion. All the necessary practices for generation of high-fidelity data in longitudinal motion of a light aircraft are successfully performed in this study.
