In this paper, we report the numerical and experimental solutions of the dynamic characteristics of a vortex ring in a circular cylinder generated by impinging a fluid blob from a hole on the bottom wall of the cylinder. We managed to visualize successfully the flow pattern shown on the vertical and horizontal planes by using a specially designed optical apparatus. Results of three-dimensional computation for the flow are shown to be in a satisfactory agreement with the experimental ones. We also report the experimental results which show a breaking of the axi-symmetric pattern after the vortex touches the free surface.

The Characteristics of the flowfield through tube banks with in-line and staggered arrangements were investigated by PIV. Strouhal numbers, velocity vectors and velocity profiles around the cylinders with in-line and staggered arrangements were observed at the pitch ratio Pt/D=2.0 and Reynolds number of Re=$Re=4.0{\times}10^3$. As the results The flow patterns through tube banks were almost a straight line in case of the in-line arrangement while it was almost 八 type in case of the staggered arrangement in the direction of the wake. The average velocity in the rear region of the tube banks with the staggered arrangement was far smaller than that with the in-line arrangement. The Strouhal number in the last rank was far smaller than that in the front ranks in both of the in-line and staggered arrangements. The wake of each cylinder changed with time and with the position of the cylinder.

Initial flame development and propagation were visualized under different fuel injection timings to relate the initial flame development to the engine stability in a port injection SI engine. Experiments were performed in an optical single cylinder engine modified from a production engine and images were captured through the quartz window mounted in the piston by an intensified CCD camera. Stratification state was controlled by varying injection timing. Under each injection condition, the flame images were captured at the pre-set crank angles. These were averaged and processed to characterize the flame. The flame stability was estimated by the weighted average of flame area, luminosity, and standard deviation of flame area. Results show that stratification state according to injection timing did not affect on the direction of flame propagation. The flame development and the initial flame stability are strongly dependent on the stratified conditions and the initial flame stability governs the engine stability and lean misfire limit.

The flow around a circular cylinder was controlled by attaching O-rings to reduce drag force acting on the cylinder. Four experimental models were tested in this study; one smooth cylinder of diameter D (D=60mm) and three cylinders fitted with O-rings of diameters d=0.0167 D, 0.05D and 0.067 D with pitches of PPD=2D, 1D, 0.5D and 0.25D. The drag force, mean velocity and turbulence Intensity profiles in the near wake behind the cylinders were measured for Reynolds numbers based on the cylinder diameter in the range of Re$_{D}$=7.8$\times$10$^3$~1.2$\times$10$^{5}$ . At Re$_{D}$=1.2$\times$10$^{5}$ , the cylinder fitted with O-rings of d=0.0167D in a pitch interval of 0.25D shows the maximum drag reduction of about 5.4%, compared that with the smooth cylinder. The drag reduction effect of O-rings of d=0.067D is not so high. For O-ring circulars, as the Reynolds number increases, the peak location of turbulence intensity shifts downstream and the peak magnitude is decreased. Flow field around the cylinders was visualized using a smoke-wire technique to see the flow structure qualitatively. The size of vortices and vortex formation region formed behind the O-ring cylinders are smaller, compared with the smooth cylinder.der.

The focus of this research is that the scavenging aspect of in-cylinder is visualized by the PIV method and its characteristic is analyzed so that the scavenging performance of the free piston hydrogen fueled engine can improve with loop scavenging. As the results, the piston of convex type shows the best scavenging performance among the presented pistons. In case of the abnormal expansion, the scavenging of area between cylinder head and cylinder wall doesn't operate well.

In order to clarify the final process of oil consumption, the distribution and flow of oil through each ring were visualized by induced fluorescence method. Motoring and firing test were performed in a single cylinder research engine with transparent cylinder liner. The appropriate calibration techniques were used to solve the unstability of induced light intensity as well as to know the relation of the oil film thickness and output signal. Oil behavior was also observed at dynamic state by high speed CCD camera. By analyzing the oil film thickness converted from the photographed image, it was observed that the main route of oil transport through each ring is the end gap under the usual operating condition, low engine speed and low load condition. Oil film thickness is observed to be irregular and tend to move in a body horizontally at a given piston land. And it is also found that oil flows through oil ring gap so quickly that it can be observed in a single cycle, but it flows so slowly through top and 2nd compression rings that it takes quite a long time to detect the flow.
In this study, visualization of in-cylinder spray behavior and spark channel stretching by air flow characteristics depending on engine operating conditions were investigated. For in-cylinder spray behavior, increase in engine rpm did not alter the counter-clockwise air flow direction and location of in-cylinder dominant air flow but increased average air flow velocity, which hindered spray propagation parallel to the piston surface. When injection timing was retarded, direction of in-cylinder dominant air flow was changed, and average air flow velocity was reduced resulting in an increase in spray penetration length and change in direction. For spark channel stretching, increase in air flow speed did not affect spark channel stretch direction but affected length due to increase in spark channel resistance and limitation of energy ignition coil can handle. Change in air flow direction affected spark channel stretch direction where the air flow was obstructed by ground electrode which caused spark channel direction to occur in the opposing direction of air flow. It also affected spark channel stretch length due to change in air flow speed around the spark plug electrode from the interaction between the air flow and ground electrode.
The present study investigated the forms and behaviors of fuel during intake and compression process, and the initial flame stability in a lean burn engine modified as a single cylinder engine equipped with quartz windows for visualization. PLIF(Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence) method with KrF Excimer laser was used for measuring the fuel distributions. The principal design concept of the lean burn nin in this study is the axial stratification in the fuel distribution via fuel injection during intake process and different shapes of intake ports; helical and straight. The experiments showed that fuel flowed in as a vapor state in the early part of intake process and lots of this mixture mated down along the intake valve side cylinder wall, but in the latter part, a lot of fuel flowed in as a liquid state and this fuel stayed in the upper part of cylinder, after that the dense fuel cloud moved upward in the early of part compression process. It became clear that the fuel flowed in via straight port had a important role in the axial fuel stratification.

Turbulent flow around a rotating circular cylinder is investigated by Direct Numerical Simulation. The calculation is performed at three cases of low Reynolds number, Re=161, 348 and 623, based on the cylinder radius and friction velocity. Statistically strong similarities with fully developed channel flow are observed. Instantaneous flow visualization reveals that the turbulence length scale typically decreases as Reynolds number increases. Some insight into the spacial characteristics in conjunction with wave number is provided by wavelet analysis. The budget of dissipation rate as well as turbulent kinetic energy is computed and particular attention is given to the comparison with plane channel flow.
