  • Main objectives of this paper were; firstly, to explain impacts of suspended solid in the water body on the relationship between water quantity and water quality; secondly, study on the inter-relationship between organic materials, nutrients, pathogens, and suspended solids considering eco-friendly water resources. Relationship between water quality and water quantity is not easy to understand as it includes physicochemical-biological reactions and diffuse pollutions. Especially, suspended solid makes water resource management difficult. Eroded soil in the upper land transported to the downstream by water flows carrying biological and physicochemical information and sedimented in the downstream. As sediment scoured under high flow condition and environmental change, suspended solid and sediment should be emphasized for understanding the inter-relationship between water quality and water quantity. Knowledge gaps between known monitored data and management of suspended solid were identified as well for future study.

  • This study has been conducted to investigate the North Korea water supply system. For this purpose, laws and regulations concerning the North Korea water utilities were analyzed. According to this study, the water supply system of North Korea is similar to that of South Korea. The major difference between these two systems lies in the national water supplier: South Korea has the national water supplier as well as the municipal suppliers, while there is no national water supplier in North Korea. It is noted that the North Korean water utilities depend on outside suppliers for resources necessary for water production such as electricity, chemicals, spare parts, etc. This could damage the North Korean water utilities. If required resources were not delivered properly (deficient quantity and/or at delayed timing), the water suppliers would encounter difficulties in water production.

  • The following thesis researched into the characteristics of electrolytic ion water with different levels of electrical conductivity by adding NaCl into tap water which is for experimental use in multi-layered electrolytic ion water generator. Electrolytic ion water is generated by underwater electrolysis and the electrolysis generator has a simple structure, is easy to control and is highly utilized in industries. Electrolytic ion water is useful in many areas since it has a superior sterilizing power, has no possibility of secondary pollution itself as water and removes active oxygen. In the experiment, we used tap water with NaCl excluded and water with three different levels of electrical conductivity by changing NaCl concentration levels into three levels. The features of current and voltage in electrolytic ion water represented a form of quadric instead of the linear characteristic following ohm's law. As well, as the electric conductivity of water and applied voltage increased, we were able to generate much stronger acid water and alkali water.

  • To study on the water quality of domestic purifier, twenty four samples of clean water by purifier and the raw water(tap water) were tested for biological and physico-chemical examination and were checked for style of purification and the period elapsed after changing of purification medium. The results were as follows; Biological and physico-chemical findings of raw water were not exceeded standard values. Average number of general bacteria,2.coli and pH in clean water were significantly higher than that of raw water(respectively, p<0.01), but mean contents of turbidity, chloride, nitrate and iron in clean water were significantly lower than that of raw water(respectively, p<0.01). In general count of bacteria and E.coli, a half of the clean water of ceramic filter and roverse osmosis style were exceeded standard values for drinking water. All of the pH of the ion exchange style clean water were exceeded standard values. But other findings were within standard values. In average bacterial counts and physico-chemical findings of clean water by purification style of purifier, clean water of ion exchange style purifier were lowest number of general bacteria and not detected in 2. coli. But other items were highest. The longer period elapsed after changing of purification medium were the higher contents of biological and physico-chemical findings of clean water.

  • The methods for the minimization of fresh water consumption, waste water generation and water contamination have been greatly investigated and developed for last ten years. Recently, the rising cost of waste water treatment and the more strict environmental regulation lead to the higher demand of more efficient and systematic methods for process water management. The water reuse technology, which not only reduce the process water needs but also minimize waste water generation within the process, could be one of most efficient way for current demand. In this study, the practical way for reduction of water pollution and optimal reuse or recycle of process water in a newsprint mill was investigated by using a simulation model. The result of computer simulation showed that the COD level of approach system could be reduced by 50% after the stock concentration at the 2nd disc filter was increased upto 30%. The application of WRDF(Wrinkled Rotary Drum Filter) to the newsprint mill was carried out with pilot scale. The process water treated by WRDF had enough cleanliness to substitute the forming fabric shower water with the PDF water, which could result in the 30% reduction in fresh water consumption.

  • Field experimental study was performed to examine characteristics of nutrient export from paddy rice fields with irrigation practices. Experimental fields with surface-water and ground-water irrigation were monitored and analyzed during rice culture period. The water balance showed that outflow generally balanced the inflow showing that about half (58~68%) of total outflow was lost by surface drainage. Water and nutrient export are more in surface-water irrigation paddy than in ground-water irrigation paddy. The reasons might be more irrigation water available and easy to use in surface-water irrigation. If irrigation water reduced, it could result in reduction of nutrient export in paddy rice fields, which can save water and protect water quality. However, deviation from conventional standard practices might affect the rice yield and further investigations are necessary.

  • The objective of this study is assessing water management efficiency using water withdrawals from rivers and water requirements for paddies. The water management efficiency was defined by the ratio of water requirements and water withdrawals. Water withdrawals were estimated using the operating times and pumping capacity of the pumping stations from 1992 to 1999 in the Han River and Nakdong River basins. Water requirements were estimated by adding the evapotranspiration of the crops and infiltrations in the irrigated area. Evapotranspiration from the paddies was calculated by the FAO modified Penman method with observed daily weather data. The monthly water management efficiency was analyzed for each pumping stations and the district offices of KARICO (Korea Agricultural and Rural Infrastructure Corporation). The efficiencies of 59 pumping stations in the Han River basin varied from 19% to 135%, and the average was 61%. The efficiencies of 146 pumping stations in the Nakdong River basin ranged from 17% to 190%, and the average was 72%. There were no good correlations between the water management efficiency and pump capacity or irrigated area, it showed that the water management efficiency was affected by the traditional water management practices rather than the scale of irrigation district.

  • Load Duration Curve(LDC) is a useful tool for analyzing water quality characteristics under various stream flow conditions. This study investigated the methods to identify impaired waterbodies in the assessment of water quality goal attainment by using LDC for the management of Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs). Three methods were proposed. Non-typical regime exclusion method is a method to exclude water quality observations in the non-typical extreme flow conditions in order to minimize the influence of non-ordinary water quality. Flow regime weighted average method is a method to calculate weighted mean water quality instead of arithmetic mean in order to consider water characteristics properly on stream flow regime in addition to the effect of Non-typical regime exclusion method. Load exceeded interval comparison method is a method to compare the intervals between the attained and non-attained load duration periods on the LDC. The assessment of water quality goal attainment can be performed more reasonably and precisely considering water quality variations on stream flow conditions by applying these proposed methods.
