  • Understanding the liquid propellant transport phenomena in low gravity is essential for developing Korea Space Launch Vehicle (KSLV) upper-stage for the diversity of space missions. A low-gravity environment can be simulated via the free-fall method on the ground; however, the air drag is inevitable. To reduce air resistance during free fall, air-drag shield is usually adopted. In this study, the free-fall method was performed with an air-drag shield from a 7-m height tower. The acceleration of a falling object was measured and analyzed. Low gravity below 0.01 g was achieved during 1.2-s free fall with the air-drag shield. The minimum gravitational acceleration value at 1.2-s after free fall was ±0.005 g, which is comparable to the value obtained from Bremen drop tower experiments, ±0.002 g. A prolonged free-fall duration may enhance the low-gravity quality during the drop tower experiments.

  • Fire is one of important checkpoints in crewed exploration systems, where men inhabit in space. In space, astronaut can't escape from fire out of a spacecraft and not expect any help of fire fighters, either. Accordingly, the best way to stand against fire is to prevent it. But, when fire occurs in space, flame behaviors are quite different from those observed on earth because of micro- or zero-gravity in space. The present paper introduces major research results on flame behaviors under microgravity and fire prevention, detection, and suppression in crewed exploration spacecrafts and international space station based on NASA's FPDS research program.

  • SpaceX is currently leading the global launch market with the successful launch and recovery of Falcon 9 v1.2 Block 5. SpaceX developed Merlin engine, a kerosene gas generator engine, and continuously upgraded the engine from Falcon 1 to Falcon Heavy to increase payload weight. SpaceX suffered a lot of failures early on, but with the help of NASA, it was possible to overcome many crises and develop vehicles. In addition, it successfully developed reusable vehicles, which drastically reduced operating costs. Subsequent launch vehicles in Korea also need to be developed with reference to SpaceX's development strategy.

  • For the prediction of sloshing in the propellant tank of rocket vehicle utilized in RVT (reusable rocket vehicle testing) conducted by ISAS/JAXA, the flow field in the propellant tank during the ballistic flight was experimentally reproduced with the sub-scale model of it. The lateral acceleration as large as about 0.8 G was provided with a mechanical exciter and the deformation of liquid surface in the vessel was visualized with a high-speed camera. The several con-figurations of damping devices were installed and tested in the vessel, which should keep the ullage gas away from the outlet port. It was consequently suggested that the combination of a baffle plate and a perforated cylinder could be effective against the gas suction before the re-ignition of the engine. The sloshing phenomena were also simulated with the CFD code, called CIP-LSM. The numerical results showed good agreement with the corresponding data obtained in the experiment.

  • Additively manufactured, small rocket engines are perhaps the focal activities of space startups that are developing low-cost launch vehicles. Rocket engine companies such as SpaceX and Rocket Lab in the United States, Ariane Group in Europe, and IHI in Japan have already adopted the additive manufacturing process in building key components of their rocket engines. In this paper on technology trends, an existing valve housing of a rocket engine is chosen as a case study to examine the feasibility of using additively manufactured parts for rocket engines.

  • In executing the large scale national project, such as development of space launch vehicle, it is most important to guarantee the technological reliability. However the reliability analysis of launch vehicle is different from other mass product goods because of the limitation of budget and number of tests. In this study, the reliability analysis technique of the propulsion system, which is one of the major sub-systems of launch vehicle is illustrated applied to the liquid rocket engine of KSR-Ⅲ.Ȁ

  • It proposes an simple and intuitive method that calculates the equilibrium pressures of a propellant tank by appling the mass conservation principle on the helium in the liquid propellant and in an ullage volume of the propellant tank. A propellant loading analysis program is developed and validated against the existing reference data. And it has applied to the present developing program, COMS Chemical Propulsion Subsystem and the results are compared, it may use to develop a technology of the next geostationary complex satellite's propulsion system.
