  • This study was carried out to investigate the flora of Gyodongdo island (Ganghwa-gun). The vascular plants from 11 field surveys were revealed to belong to a total of 629 taxa; 118 families, 364 genera, 561 species, 5 subspecies, 53 varieties, 7 forms and 3 hybrids. 184 taxa were the first records from this region. The plants in Gyodongdo island are composed of the deciduous broad-leaved and conifer-mixed forests which are the common ones in the middle part of the Korean Peninsula. Five taxa of Korean endemic plants such as Clematis brachyura Maxim., Viola seoulensis Nakai, Populus ${\times}$ tomentiglandulosa T. B. Lee, Forsythia koreana (Rehder) Nakai and Hemerocallis hakuunensis Nakai were collected. Endangered wild plants designated by the law called 'Protection Law for Endangered wild fauna and flora' were one taxon. The red list plants according to IUCN valuation basis were examined for 13 taxa; endangered (EN) species of Prunus yedoensis Matsum., Vulnerable (VU) species of both Utricularia pilosa (Makino) Makino and Iris ruthenica var. nana Maxim., Near Threatened (NT) species of Senecio argunensis Turcz., Least Concern (LC) species of Platycladus orientalis (L.) Franco, Potentilla discolor Bunge, Limnophila sessiliflora (Vahl) Blume, Acorus calamus L., Phacelurus latifolius (Steud.) Ohwi, Pseudoraphis ukishiba Ohwi, Belamcanda chinensis (L.) DC., and Not Evaluate (NE) species of both Astragalus sikokianus Nakai and Potamogeton oxyphyllus Miq. The floristic regional indicator plants found in this area were a total of 47 taxa comprising three taxa of grade V, four taxa of grade IV, nine taxa of grade III, 10 taxa of grade II, and 21 taxa of grade I. The naturalized plants were identified as 62 taxa and the percentage of naturalized index (NI) was 9.9 % and the percentage of urbanization index (UI) was 19.3 %, respectively. Furthermore, hemicryptophytes (28 %), therophytes (26 %), hydrophytes (13 %) and geophyte (12 %) showed high proportional ratio in life form spectrum.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the changes in the structural parts of the craniofacial skeleton subsequent to chincap therapy in the juvenile skeletal Class III patients. The subject consisted of 29 Korean children(14 males, 15 females) who had skeletal Class III malocclusion and were undergone chincap therapy from the beginning of the treatment (and an auxilliary upper removable appliance, if necessary). The control group was composed of 21 children(10 males, 11 females) with skeletal Class III malocclusion who had no orthodontic treatment. Cephalometric data at the mean age of 7 and 2 years later were analyized by finite element method, and compared between groups by independent group t-test(p<0.05). The results of the present study were as follows; 1. There were no significant changes in the cranial base, posterior face, upper anterior face, ramus, chin and soft tissues by the chincap therapy. 2. The mandibular body showed significant differences in the minimum extention ratio and the overall shape ratio. This means that the vertical direction of growth was retarded by the chincap therapy. 3. The major direction of the growth in the maxillary basal bone was significantly more horizontal in the experimental group, which suggests that the vertical growth of maxilla was inhibited. 4. There was statistical difference in the major direction of the growth of the anterior face between groups. This may be due to the significant difference in the major direction of growth of the lower anterior face, supposed to be resulted from the mandibular rotation and/or displacement by the chincap therapy. The change in the oral functional space seemed to be caused by the same reason. 5. From the standpoint of these results, the retardation of growth, the changes of the growth direction and the morphological changes could be accepted partly, but the major effect of the chincap seems to be the rotation and the displacement of the mandible.

  • Korean local collected strains of perilla were analyzed on their protein and amino-acid contents in the seed. The strains analyzed were 80 of which grown in the experimental field of Crop Experiment Station at Suwon in 1991. This experiment was performed to obtain the basic informations on the varietal differences of protein and amino-acid contents and further applied in the breeding project for quality improvement of perilla. The seed protein contents of 80 perilla varieties ranged from 17.9% to 24.6% and the average content was 24.6%. There were no differences in protein contents according to the maturity and 1,000 seed weight, but differed by the seed coat color showing 1.4% higher content in light gray than that of drak brown, which may suggest that the seed coat color could be used as a marker gene for breeding high protein varieties. While the total essential amino-acid contents of collected perilla ranged from 36.41% to 44.85%, the mean of 40.55%, the non-essential amino-acid contents was 47.23%~60.01% with the mean of 55.29%. Moreover, there was high positive correlation between the essential amino-acid contents and seed coat color. The essential amino-acids of perilla has an exceptionally high content of arginine, leucine, but methionine indeed being almost marginal. Of the essential amino-acids, lysine, methionine and valine were contained higher compared with the FAO recommendation level.

  • Parental fish of R. uyekii(Mori) were colleted from the Nakdong River, Korea. Artificial insemination was carried out 4 times during June using the same pair (a female 52.70 mm TL and a male 56.80 mm TL). Unfertilized eggs are nearly spindly, opaque yellow in colour, measuring about 3.20-3.50 mm in length, about 1.50-1.80 mm in breadth. Hatching began about 50 hours after insemination at water temperature of $16.5{\sim}18.5^{\circ}C$. The newly hatched larvae are 4.10-4.50 mm in total length(TL), with 29-30 myomeres. Nine days after hatching, the larvae averaged 8.40 mm in total length and caudal notochord flexed at $45^{\circ}$. Eighteen days after hatching, total length reached 8.90 mm. The part of the fin-fold of the future dorsal and anal fins became high. Twenty-eight days after hatching, total length was 9.35 mm. The caudal fin-rays began to fork into two branches. The increased number of melanophores appeared newly on the head dorsal and anal fin-rays. The larvae reached the juvenile stage at 50-60 days after hatching and attained 14.50-16.20 mm in total length, and all fin-rays was formed.

  • Records of 71 consecutive patients who had received multiple valve replacement were reviewed[34male,37female,mean age 40.5$\pm$11.2 <14-63> . The early death rate was 2.8%[2/71 . A completed follow-up rate of 95.7% was accomplished in these 69 patients who left hospital[mean 42.5 $\pm$29.5 patients-years . Five of these patients died. The late death rate was 7.2%. Four patients experienced anticoagulant-related hemorrhage[all were minor . One patient had a thromboembolic episode[permanent ,and 2 had late prosthetic valve endocarditis. There was no clinical evidence of hemolysis and structural failure of valves used. Of those patients who survived,NYHA functional class improved significantly[from 87.2% class III & IV before to 95.8% class I & II after . Linearized rates for thromboembolism and anticoagulant-related hemorrhage, and for prosthetic valve endocarditis were 0.67%/100 patient-years,2.95%/100 patient-years,1.34%/100 patient-years, respectively. The actuarial estimates of incidence free of all complications and valve-related deaths were 92.2%/patient-years.Despites the advanced heart disease involving two or more native valves, the patients who had multiple valve replacement had very good results, over a 9-year period.

  • A Monokaryotic strain G8M without clamp connections was isolated from germinated basidiospore that was obtained from cultivated fruit body. Strain G8M was used as a tester isolate for 'dikaryon-monokaryon mating'(di-mon mating) with the strains of Ganoderma lucidum, G6 and G35(Korean wild strains), G3(Taiwan), G4(Canada), G15(America), G. oregonense G24, G. resinaceum G28, G. oerstedii G23, and G. subamboinense G29. Isolate G8M was compatible to Korean strains G6 and G35, but was incompatible to foreign strains G3, G4, or G15. Compatible reactions between strains were readily observed macroscopically. Clear barrage lines formed between incompatible strains. These clear lines were not apparent in compatible di-mon matings. The Korean strains were morphologically distinct; they did not form any chlamydospores, and stopped growth at $35^{\circ}C$. The strains of G. lucidum from Korea may be considered as different species from Taiwan, Canadian and American cultures.

  • One hundred forty-four patients underwent operation for coarctation of the aorta at Seoul National University Children's Hospital between June 1986 and Decembsr 1995. Age ranged 0.1 to 191 months. Of these 78.5%(113) were infants. We classified the patients in terms of the anatomic location of coarctatiln and the associatCd anomalies(I[401= primary coarctation, 11(741=isthmic hypoplasia, lIIf30)=tubular hypoplasia involving transverse arch, Ar63 =with ventricular septal defect, B(28)=with other major cardiac defects). Subcalvian flap coarctoplasty(60), resection & anastomosis(44), extended aortoplasty(26), and onlay patch(14) were used as surgical methods. Overall operative mortality was 16.0(23/144)%. The hospital mortality was signific'antly higher in patheints with type 111, subtype B, younger age(under 3 months), extended aortoplasty(p(0.01). However, one-stage total repair in patients with subtype A or B were not found to be a predictor of hospital death. Restenosis had occured in 18 patients among 121 survivals(14. 9%). The mean follow-up period was 29.1 $\pm$28.8(0~129.2) months. Preoperative, immediate postoperative(within 3 months after operation) and postoperative(later than 6 months after operation) echocardiographic data on the dimensions of ascending aorta(AA), transverse arch(TA), an4 aortic isthmus(Al) were available in 77 patients(I=20, ll=42, 111= 15). Preoperative and postoperative aortic isthmus(All) and tra sverse arch indices(TAI), defined as TAIAA & AIIAA respectively, were compared. Immediate postoperative All in type 1, II and TAI in type 111 were significantly smaller in stenotic than non-stenotic group suggesting incomplete relieves of stenotic segment Younger age, subclavian coarctoplasty in patient under 3 months of age were round to be the risk factors for restenosis in this series. In conclusion, We found that aortic arch index and transverse arch index can be a useful tool to figure out the anatomic and clinical characteristics of the patients with aortic coarctation, and that anatomy, associated anomalies, age, and surgical methods may influence the surgical outcome of the coarctation repair.

  • The flora of the vascular plants in Deoksesan Mt. and its adjacent areas, located at Inje-gun, Gangwon province, were surveyed for a total ten times from April of 2018 to July of 2020. The result of this survey revealed 457 taxa, consisting of 90 families, 287 genera, 404 species, 13 subspecies, 35 varieties, and 5 forms. Among them, 12 taxa were endemic plants to Korea, and 7 taxa were rare plants. Red list plants and those designated as controlled Korean biological resources, requiring special permission for export outside of the county, numbered 3 and 103 taxa, respectively. The floristic target species amounted to 83 taxa, specifically 8 taxa of grade IV, 26 taxa of grade III, 21 taxa of grade II, and 28 taxa of grade I. In addition, 14 taxa were classified as plants adaptable to climate change, and 4 taxa at their respective northern limits, first recorded in this study, were also investigated. Twenty-nine taxa of alien plants and 4 taxa of ecosystem disturbance species were also found in this area. Our results suggest that some species should be preserved and can serve as basic information with which to establish data on the preservation of resources, such as plant diversity and distributional changes on Deoksesan Mt.
