Removal Process of Metallic Impurity for Silicon Surface Detergent by Ion Exchange (실리콘 표면처리에 있어서 이온교환 막에 의한 금속불순물의 제거공정)

  • HF purification performance of an ion exchange membrane(IEM) was evaluated with 0.5% HF spiked with 10ppb of Fe, Ni and Cu nitrates. The result show that after less than five turnovers through an IEM, the metallic impurity concentration drops below 1ppb. The decrease rate can be fitted to a model assuming the experimental tanks to be continuously stirred tank reaction and that the metallic impurity concentration after the IEM is a function of the single-pass purification efficiency of the membrane, the concentration before purification and the metals desorbed form the IEM. The Concentration after purification was investigated up to a cumulative Fe loading of 300ppb in the 23 liter recirculated loop. It increases linearly vs. cumulative loading and can be explained by the Langmuir theory resulting in a purification efficiency at the equilibrium of close to 99.5% in this loading regime.

  • Effects of metal impurities in insulation of distribution cables on electrical conduction of distribution cables was investigated. Samples of Al, Cu, Fe are fabricated as metallic impurities, and measured electrical conductivity in the voltage range of 0~10 KV. Temperature dependent effect of hysteresis curves and the relationship between forward and reverse current due to impurity content are discussed.

  • The effects of Mn and Cr on the crystallization behaviors of Fe-bearing intennetallics in A356 alloy were studied. Coarse and acicular ${\beta}-Al_{5}$FeSi phase in A356-0.20wt.%Fe alloy was modified into small ${\alpha}$-Al(Fe,Mn)Si and ${\alpha}$-Al(Fe,Cr)Si phases in response to Mn and Cr addition, respectively. Increasing of Mn addition amount elevates the crystallizing temperature of ${\alpha}$-Al(Fe,Mn)Si and the Mn/Fe ratio in the ${\alpha}$-Al(Fe,Mn)Si. Cr is more effective to modify ${\beta}-Al_{5}$FeSi in comparison with Mn. ${\alpha}$-Al(Fe,Mn)Si phase had BCC/SC dual structure.

  • Ferroelectric $LiTaO_3$ single crystals, grown by the Czochralski method, were thermally treated at temperature $1000^{\circ}C\;and\;1100^{\circ}C$. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) study of stoichiometric $LiTaO_3$ and thermally treated $LiTaO_3$ crystals has been investigated by employing an X-band spectrometer. From the $Fe^{3+}$ EPR spectra, it turned out that there is no change of site location and local site symmetry around $Fe^{3+}$ impurity ion between stoichiometric and thermally treated $LiTaO_3$ single crystals. We confirmed that the ionic state of $Fe^{3+}$ ion changed after thermal treatment. The EPR parameters of $Fe^{3+}$ ion in $LiTaO_3$ single crystals are determined with effective spin Hamiltonian.

A Study on the Contamination of D.I. Water and its Effect on Semiconductor Device Manufacturing (초순수의 오염과 반도체 제조에 미치는 영향에 대한 연구)

  • We analyzed the D.I. water used in wet cleaning process of semiconductor device manufacturing both at the D.I. water plant and at the wafer cleaning bath to detect the impurity source of D.I. water contamination. This shows that the quantity of impurity is related to the resistivity of D.I. water, and we found that the cleanliness of the wafer surface processed in D.I. water bath was affected by the degree of the ionic impurity contamination. So we evaluated the cleaning effect as different method for Fe ion, having the best adsoptivity on wafer surface. Moreover the temperature effect of the D.I. water is investigated in case of anion in order to remove the chemical residue after wet process. In addition to the control of D.I. water resistivity, chemical analysis of impurity control in D.I. water should be included and a suitable cleaning an drinsing method needs to be investigated for a high yielding semiconductor device.

Improving of Corrosion Resistance of Aluminum Alloys by Removing Intermetallic Compound

  • It is well known that iron is one of the most common impurity elements found in aluminum and its alloys. Iron in the aluminum forms an intermetallic compounds such as $FeAl_3$. The $FeAl_3$ particles on the aluminum surface are one of the most detrimental phases to the corrosion process and anodizing procedure for aluminum and its alloys. Trial and error surface treatment will be carried out to find the preferential and effective removal of $FeAl_3$ particles on the surfaces without dissolution of aluminum matrix around the particles. One of the preferable surface treatments for the aim of getting $FeAl_3$ free surface was an electrochemical treatment such as cathodic current density of $-2kAm^{-2}$ in a 20-30 mass% $HNO_3$ solution for the period of 300s. The corrosion characteristics of aluminum surface with $FeAl_3$ free particles are examined in a $0.1kmol/m^3$ NaCl solution. It is found that aluminum with free $FeAl_3$ particles shows higher corrosion resistance than aluminum with $FeAl_3$ particles.

Electrochemical Performance of Lithium Iron Phosphate by Adding Graphite Nanofiber for Lithium Ion Batteries

  • Olivine type $LiFePO_4$ cathode material was synthesized by solid-state reaction method including one-step heat treatment. To improve the electrochemical characteristics, graphite nanofiber (GNF) was added into $LiFePO_4$ cathode material. The structure and morphological performance of $LiFePO_4$ were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD); and a field emission-scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM). The synthesized $LiFePO_4$ has an olivine structure with no impurity, and the average particle size of $LiFePO_4$ is about 200~300 nm. With graphite nanofiber added, the discharge capacity increased from 113.43 mAh/g to 155.63 mAh/g at a current density of 0.1 $mA/cm^2$. The resistance was also significantly decreased by the added graphite nanofiber.

Electron Magnetic Resonance Study of Paramagnetic Impurities in LiTaO3 and LiMbO3 Single Crystals (LiTaO3 및 LiMbO3 단결정 내의 상자성 불순물에 관한 전자 자기공명 연구)

  • Electron magnetic resonance (EMR) of paramagnetic Cr$^{3+}$, Mn$^{2+}$, and Fe$^{3+}$ impurity ions in ferroelectric LiNbO$_3$ and LiTaO$_3$ single crystals has been studied. The actual sites location of paramagnetic impurity ions in the crystals was suggested from the experimental results and zero field splitting parameters calculated by superposition model. It turns out that Cr$^{3+}$ ions in LiNbO$_3$ crystal have two resonance centers and enter both the Li$^{+}$ and Nb$^{5+}$ ions. Mn$^{2+}$ and Fe$^{3+}$ impurity ions in LiNbO$_3$ substitute for Nb$^{5+}$ ions. However, both Cr$^{3+}$ and Fe$^{3+}$ ions in LiTaO$_3$ crystal reside at Li$^{+}$ ions.$ +/ ions.+/ ions.

Impurity variation in high purity silica mineral with different leaching methods (실리카광물의 산침출 정제방법에 따른 불순물 변화 연구)

  • Purification of silica mineral was compared with various leaching methods such as shaking, stirring, ultrasonic with 2.5% HF/HCl solution. Among them, ultrasonic method showed a best leaching effect. From the leaching experiment, Na, K, Fe, Al exist as the major impurity elements. The removal rate of Al, Fe showed little difference with various leaching methods but Ca, Mn, Na were very different. Four kinds of silica mineral (>99% purity) after physical purification treatment were used for ultrasonic leaching experiment. Among them IN-Si had a highest impurity removal rate. Ca, Cr, K, Zn were removed above 80% using ultrasonic leaching method and Fe was also removed above 60%. But Al showed 10~60% removal rate with different samples.
