  • Variable weld bead penetrations related to the base metal chemistry of stainless steels in GTA welding have been under constant investigations due to their industrial implications. It has been proposed that among other elements, the sulfur content of steels determines the weld pool geometry, particularly its penetration. It is suggested that the surface tension temperature gradient of steels becomes positive with appropriate dosing in sulfur and results in inward melt flow, propitious for deeper welds. However, the chemistry of industrial steels is complex due to the presence of multiple minor elements either deliberately added or remnant impurity traces. With this in view, investigations on 41 austenitic and nine martensitic stainless steels were carried to see if there existed any possible relation between the weld profile and some of the designated elements. The results suggest no direct correlation between sulfur or any other major or trace element and weld penetration. At first glance the results are contradictory to what is often asserted.

  • Comprehensive utilization of tungsten tailings resources not only solves environmental problems but also creates huge economic benefits. The high content of iron impurity in tungsten tailings will have adverse effect on the downstream comprehensive utilization, whether flotation or pickling. In this paper, the Superconducting High Gradient Magnetic Separation(S-HGMS) is used to remove of Fe impurities from tungsten tailings. The optimal experimental parameters are as follows: background magnetic induction intensity is 3.0T, slurry flow velocity is 500ml/min. The Fe removal rate of Fe was 68.8% and the recovery rate was 59.53%.

  • Ni-ceria cermets have been extensively investigated as candidates for the anode in intermediate-temperature solid oxide fuel cells. We have used the citric method to synthesize nanocomposite powders consisting of NiO (Ni metal content: $40{\sim}60%$ by volume) highly dispersed in $Ce_{0.9}Gd_{0.1}O_{1.95}$ (CGO). The microstructure characteristics and sintering behaviors of the nanocomposites were investigated. No impurity phases were observed and the shrinkage of these substrates matched well with that of a CGO electrolyte with a specific surface area of $11\;m^2/g$. Densification of the CGO electrolyte layer to $<5\;{\mu}m$ thickness was achieved by co-firing the laminated electrolyte with the porous NiO-CGO substrate at $1400^{\circ}C$ for 6 h.

  • Colloidal stability is one of crucial factors for many applications of nanodiamond. Despite recent development, nanodiamonds available on the market often exhibit a high impurity content, wide size distribution of aggregates and low resistance to sedimentation. In the current study, four commercial nanodiamond powders synthesized by detonation synthesis were surface modified and then separated with respect to the size into six fractions by centrifugation. The fractions were evaluated by zeta potential, particle size distribution and elemental composition. The results showed that the modified nanodiamonds form stable colloidal suspensions without sedimentation for a long time.

  • BaTiO3 ceramics doped with 0.1 to 4.0 mol% Nb2O5 were prepared by conventional solid stage sintering process, so as to investigate the effect of the amount of Nb2O5 on the dielectric properties and complex impedance patterns of barium titanates. From the measurement of capacitance, we found that the dielectric constant of BaTiO3 samples with 1 mol% or more Nb2O5 remained approximately constant around room temperature with values higher than 2500. In this paper, the effect of impurity content as well as temperature on complex impedance patterns was discussed in detail. In particular, the grain and grain boundary behavior of samples which showed PTCR characteristics was discussed in terms of measuring temperature.

  • Microwave dielectric properties of A1$_2$O$_3$ ceramics resonator were investigated with impurity addition. Increasing the contents of Bi$_2$O$_3$Q-value and Q $\times$ f were increased. In the specimen with the content of Bi$_2$O$_3$(0.3wt%), dielectric constant, quality factor and temperature coefficient of resonant frequency(TCRF, $\tau$$_{f}$) had a good values of 10.76,23,253(at 9.68[GHz]) and -39.09(ppm/$^{\circ}C$), respectively. The TCRF value was decreased with MnO$_2$ and increased with Sm$_2$O$_3$. La$_2$O$_3$.>.

  • We have grown GaAs epilayers by chemical beam epitaxy(CBE) using unprecracked hydrides and metal organic compounds via a surface decomposition process. This result shows that unprecracked arsine (AsH3) or monoethylarsine (MEAs) can be used in chemical beam epitaxy(CBE) as a replacement of a precracked AsH3 source in CBE. It was also found that the uptake of carbon impurity in epilayers grown using trimethylgallium(TMG) with unprecracked AsH3 or MEAs was significantly reduced compared to that in epilayers grown by CBE process employing TMG and arsenics produced from precracked hydrides. We propose a surface structural model suggesting that the hydrogen atoms play an important role in the reduction of carbon content in GaAs epilayer. Intermediates like dihydrides from hydride sources were also considered to hinder carbon atoms from being incorporated into the epilayers or to remove other carbon containing species on the surface.

  • Copper (Cu)-incorporated silica aerogel was synthesized by a sol-gel process with two-step drying process for color modification. The microstructure of the silica aerogel was not affected significantly by the Cu concentration and an amorphous structure was maintained without any crystalline impurity phases. The textural properties of the silica aerogels investigated by using N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms exhibited the typical features of mesoporous materials. The pore size and porosity were not changed significantly even with the incorporation of Cu up to 1.5 M, which indicates negligible variation of thermal insulating properties. However, the color of the aerogel changed from white and light greenish to dark greenish with increasing Cu content. The color change of the silica aerogel was due to the modification of the electron energy band structure of silica by the Cu atomic levels. Therefore, the color of the silica aerogel powders could be manipulated by incorporating Cu without degrading the thermal insulating properties.

  • Gold plating is used as a coating of connector in printed circuit boards, ceramic integrated circuit packages, semiconductor devices and so on, because the film has excellent electric conductivity, solderability and chemical properties such as durability to acid and other chemicals. In most cases, internal connection between device and package and external terminals for connecting packaging and printed circuit board are electroless Ni-P plating followed by immersion Au plating (ENIG) to ensure connection reliability. The deposition behavior and film properties of electroless Au plating are affected by P content, grain size and mixed impurity components in the electroless Ni-P alloy film used as the underlayer plating. In this study, the correlation between electroless nickel plating used as a underlayer layer and cyanide-free electroless Au plating using thiomalic acid as a complexing agent and aminoethanethiol as a reducing agent was investigated.

  • Sodium hydroxide solutions are often employed as sterilization agents in the pharmaceutical industry. Here, the chloride content is considered as a critical impurity. In this study, an electrochemical method was developed to remove chloride ions (Cl-) through the oxidative deposition of AgCl on a Ag anode. The Cl- content in the commercially available 50% w/w NaOH solution employed was approximately 100 mg Cl-/kg NaOH. As the OH- content is approximately 18,000 times higher than the Cl- content, the formation of AgCl may be expected to be thermodynamically less favorable than the formation of Ag2O. However, activation energies for AgCl and Ag2O formation have been reported to be approximately 3.8 and 31.2 kJ/mol, respectively, and indicate that AgCl formation is favored. AgCl can be selectively produced by controlling the anode potential. Here, the Cl- concentration was reduced to less than 50 mg Cl-/kg NaOH when an anode potential of 0.18 or 0.19 V vs. Hg/HgO (reference electrode) was applied for one hour at 50℃. XRD analysis and visual monitoring of the Ag anode confirmed the oxidative deposition of AgCl on the anode surface as well as the electrochemical desalination of the concentrated NaOH solution.
