  • The contents of hexachlorobenzene (HCB), a hazardous impurity, in chlorothalonil were monitored through 1996 to 2000. The number of samples were 32 from three different sources. The contents determined by GLC/ECD were ranged from 0.0036% to 0.0330% with average content of 0.0219%. All the samples were recorded below 0.05%, which is the regulation standard of HCB in the technical. The total input of HCB in Korean agriculture was calculated to be approximately 77 kg a year.

  • The superconducting properties of $YBa_2Cu_3O_x$ with different content impurities of PbO and $BaPbO_3$ were studied. When the PbO was used as an additive in $YBa_2Cu_3O_x$, although the melting point could be reduced, the superconductivity became poor. From the XRD pattern of the sintered mixture of $YBa_2Cu_3O_x$ and PbO it was known that there is a reaction between $YBa_2Cu_3O_x$ and PbO, and the product is $BaPbO_3$. In the process of the reaction the superconducting phase of $YBa_2Cu_3O_x$ was decreased and $BaPbO_3$ would be the main phase in the sample. Therefore, $BaPbO_3$ was chosen as the impurity additive for the comparative study. The single phase of $BaPbO_3$ was synthesized by the simple way from both mixtures of $BaCO_3$ and PbO, $BaCO_3$ and $PbO_2$. Different contents of $BaPbO_3$ (10%, 20%, 30%) were added in the $YBa_2Cu_3O_x$. By the Phase analysis in the XRD patterns it was proved that there was no reaction between $YBa_2Cu_3O_x$ and $BaPbO_3$. When $BaPbO_3$ was used as impurity in $YBa_2Cu_3O_x$ the superconductivity was much better than PbO as an impurity additive in $YBa_2Cu_3O_x$.

  • The melting temperature and critical temperature (Tc) of $YBa_2Cu_3O_x$ with deferent content impurities of PbO and $BaPbO_3$ were studied. When the PbO was used as addition in $YBa_2Cu_3O_x$, although the melting point could be reduced, the superconductivity (the transition wide, ${\Delta}T_c$) became poor. When $BaPbO_3$ was used as impurity in $YBa_2Cu_3O_x$ the superconductivity was much better than PbO as impurity in $YBa_2Cu_3O_x$. But the melting point of $YBa_2Cu_3O_x$ with $BaPbO_3$ could not be found when the temperature was lower than $1000^{\circ}C$ in the DTA measurement.

  • Pulverization of two different sized micro-$B_4C$ particles (${\sim}10{\mu}m$ and ${\sim}150{\mu}m$) was investigated using a STS based high energy ball milling system. Shapes, generation of the impurities, and reduction of the particle size dependent on milling time and initial particle size were investigated using various analytic tools including SEM-EDX, XRD, and ICP-MS. Most of impurity was produced during the early stage of milling, and impurity content became independent on the milling time after the saturation. The degree of particle size reduction was also dependent on the initial $B_4C$ size. It was found that the STS nanoparticles produced from milling is strongly bounded with the $B_4C$ particles forming the $B_4C$/STS composite particles that can be used as a neutron absorbing nanocomposite. Based on the morphological evolution of the milled particles, a schematic pulverization model for the $B_4C$ particles was constructed.

  • After nuclear power plants are permanently shut down and decommissioned, the remaining irradiated metal components such as stainless steel, carbon steel, and Inconel can be used as neutron absorber. This study investigates the possibility of reusing these metal components as neutron absorber materials, that is burnable poison. The absorption cross section of the irradiated metals did not lose their chemical properties and performance even if they were irradiated over 40-50 years in the NPPs. To examine the absorption capability of the waste metals, the lattice calculations of WH 17×17 fuel assembly were analyzed. From the results, Inconel-718 significantly hold-down fuel assembly excess reactivity compared to stainless steel 304 and carbon steel because Inconel-718 contains a small amount of boron nuclide. From the results, a 20wt% impurity of boron in irradiated Inconel-718 enhances the excess reactivity suppression. The application of irradiated Inconel-718 as a burnable absorber for SMR core was investigated. The irradiated Inconel-718 impurity with 20wt% of boron content can maintain and suppress the whole core reactivity. We emphasize that the irradiated metal components can be used as burnable absorber materials to control the reactivity of commercial reactor power and small modular reactors.

  • It analyzes the quality of the fine aggregate which is reproduced through a dry production process with cyclone and a wet production process. The conclusions of the study are as follows. 1. The recycled fine aggregate through the dry production process with cyclone shows the low rate of absorption and impurity content after the cyclone process. It shows that its density is 2.37, absorption rate is 4.8 and stability is $5.1\%$ and less. Therefore, it satisfies the standards of KS F 2573(recycled aggregate for concrete) as the first grade. 2. The recycled fine aggregate through the wet production process shows the low rate of absorption and foreign substance content after the process of wash and dehydration. It shows that its density is 2.40, absorption rate is 3.12 and stability is $3.2\%$ and less. Therefore, it satisfies the standards of KS F 2573(recycled aggregate for concrete) as the first grade.

  • In this paper, we investigated ionic impurities and physical properties by change of carbon black content, which is asemiconductive material for underground power transmission. Specimens were made into sheet form with three existing resins and nine specimens for measurement. The ionic impurities of the specimens were measured using anICP-AES (Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometer), and the density of specimens was measured by a density meter. Specific heat (Cp) was then measured using aDSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry). The ranges of measurement temperature were from 0[$^{\circ}C$] to 200[$^{\circ}C$], and heating temperature was 4[$^{\circ}C$/min]. Ionic impurities were measured to be high according to increases in the content of carbon black from this experimental result and density was also increased according to these properties. In particular, the impurity content values of A1 and A2, and existing resins, were measured at more than 4000[ppm]. Specific heat from the DSC results was lowered according to augmentation in the content of carbon black. The ionic impurities of carbon black containing Fe, Co, Mn, Al and Zn are forms of rapidly passed kinetic energy that increase the number of times breaking occurs during unit time with the near particles according to an increase in the vibration of particles by the applied heat energy.

  • $Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{x}$ was prepared by the conventional method of solid state reaction and SHS method. The samples were annealed in different atmosphere in order to examine the influence of atmospheres on the carbon contents in the $Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{x}$ compound. The lowest carbon content in $Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{x}$ could be attended when the sample was annealed in $O_{2}$ at $800^{\circ}C$ for 100 hours. The $CO_{2}$ in air pollute the samples and increase the carbon content in the sintering process. The critical current density of the $Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{x}$ samples will decrease with the increasing carbon contents in the samples. The impurity carbon will deposit in the grain boundary, which makes critical current density lower.
