Lithium ion Batteries commercially available since the early nineties in Japan are going to be more and more important for portable electronic devices and even EV applications. Today several companies around the world are working hard to join to market for Lithium secondary batteries. Based on the growing interest for commercial use of batteries also the materials have to be reviewed in order to meet large scale production needs. The requirements especially for electrolytes for lithium batteries are extremely high. The solvents and the lithium salts should be of highest purity. So the supply of these chemicals including packaging, transportation and storage but also the handling in production are critical items in this field. Frolic impurities are very critical for LiPF6 based electrolytes. The influence of water is tremendous. But also the other protic impurities like alcoholes are playing an Important role for the electrolyte quality. The reaction of these species with LiPF6 leads to formation of HF which further reacts with cathode materials (spinel) and anode. To understand the role of the protic impurities more clearly the electrolyte was doped with such compounds and was analyzed for protic impurities and HF. These results which directly show the relation between impurities and quality will be presented and discussed. In addition several investigations on different packaging materials as well as methods to analyze and handle the sensititive material will be addressed. These questions which are only partly discussed in literature so far and never been investigated systematically cover some of the key parameters for understanding of the battery chemicals. This investigation and understanding however is of major importance for scientist and engineers in the field of Lithium ion and Lithium polymer batteries.
The surface of silicon dummy wafers is contaminated with metallic impurities owing to the reaction with and adhesion of chemicals during the oxidation process. These metallic impurities negatively affect the device performance, reliability, and yield. To solve this problem, a wafer-cleaning process that removes metallic impurities is essential. RCA (Radio Corporation of America) cleaning is commonly used, but there are problems such as increased surface roughness and formation of metal hydroxides. Herein, we attempt to use a chelating agent (EDTA) to reduce the surface roughness, improve the stability of cleaning solutions, and prevent the re-adsorption of impurities. The bonding between the cleaning solution and metal powder is analyzed by referring to the Pourbaix diagram. The changes in the ionic conductivity, H2O2 decomposition behavior, and degree of dissolution are checked with a conductivity meter, and the changes in the absorbance and particle size before and after the reaction are confirmed by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) analyses. Thus, the addition of a chelating agent prevents the decomposition of H2O2 and improves the life of the silicon wafer cleaning solution, allowing it to react smoothly with metallic impurities.
To ensure radiological safety margin in the transport and storage of spent nuclear fuel, it is crucial to perform source term and shielding analyses in advance from the perspective of conservation. When performing source term analysis on UO2 fuel, which is mostly used in commercial nuclear power plants, uranium and oxygen are basically considered to be the initial materials of the new fuel. However, the presence of impurities in the fuel and structural materials of the fuel assembly may influence the source term and shielding analyses. The impurities could be radioactive materials or the stable materials that are activated by irradiation during reactor power operation. As measuring the impurity concentration levels in the fuel and structural materials can be challenging, publicly available information on impurity concentration levels is used as a reference in this evaluation. To assess the effect of impurities, the results of the source term and shielding analyses were compared depending on whether the assumed impurity concentration is considered. For the shielding analysis, generic cask design data developed by KEPCO-E&C was utilized.
Mullitization of halloysite was examined with special attention to the influence of polytypism and impurities on the phase transformation. The phase transformation sequence in halloysite is identical with those in kaolinite and in dickite. Difference in the phase transformation above $1000^{\circ}C$ in kaolin minerals is attributed to the different crystal structures of metakaolins or the effect of impurities. Growth of mullite crytals in the discordered kaolinte including halloysite or illite occurs at about $100^{\circ}C$ lower temperature. Cristobalite is also hardly produced.
We investigated the effect of inorganic impurities such as clay bricks and asphalt concrete in recycled aggregate on the properties of lean concrete. The optimized moisture content of lean concrete with clay bricks increased, because the absorption ratio of clay bricks is high. On the other hand, lean concrete with asphalt concrete produced an opposite result owing to low absorption ratio. The results showed that inorganic impurities did not have a significant effect on compressive .strength of lean concrete containing below 30$\%$ clay bricks and below 10$\%$ asphalt concrete.

A developed neutron activation analysis(NAA) and gamma-spectrometry were applied to improve the analytical sensitivity and precision of impurities in electronic-circuit raw materials. It is well known that soft errors in high precision electronic circuits can be induced by alpha particles emitted from naturally occurring radioactive impurities such as U and Th. As electronic circuits have recently become smaller in dimension and higher in density, these alpha-particle emitting radioactive impurities must be strictly controlled. Therefore, new NAA methods have been established using a HTS(Hydraulic Transfer System) irradiation facility and a background reduction method. For eliminating or stabilizing fluctuated background caused by Rn-222 and its progeny nuclides in air, a nitrogen purging system is used. Using the developed NAA and gamma-spectrometry, ultra trace amounts of U(0.1ng/g) and Th(0.01ng/g) in an alumina ball and high purity silica used for an epoxy molding compound (EMC) could be determined.
The effects of impurities, included in the by-produced phosphogypsum from the dihydrate process, on the hydration of portland cement were studied. Six gypsums were adopted in this study; four different raw phosphogypsums from domestic fertilizer plants, a reprocessed phosphogypsum and a reagent grade pure gypsum. Cements with differing $SO_3$ content, were synthesized by grinding two different commercial clinkers and the above six gypsums together. The effects of the impurities were investigated by measuring the setting time, the non-evaporable water coatent, X-ray phase analysis of cement pastes and the compressive strength of cement mortar specimens. It was found that the soluble $P_2O_5$ known as one of injurious impurities on the hydration of portland cement, included in the demestic raw phosghoypsum cxneedigply by far the specified amounts of the Korean Industrial Standards (L9005), and retarded the setting time severely, thus the strength development of cement was delayed at the earlier stage of hydration.

Inside of working PDP, there exist highly reactive conditions in the gap between two glass panels. MgO film and phosphor have been investigated as a function of discharge, also phosphor and sealing frits have been investigated as a function of temperature. Changes of impurity generation of MgO, phosphor and sealing fits were measured by using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and quadropole mass spectroscopy (XPS) and quadropole mass spectrometer (QMS). Impurities such as CO, $CO_2$, OH and $H_2O$ were increased during discharge and heating treatment. Gaseous impurities such as carbon compounds and water deteriorated the characteristics of PDP operation during of lifetime. So metal is used to remove the impurities of phosphor and sealing frits during hearting, the result that the quantity of the impurities such as carbon monoxide and water was reduced.
An extraction chromatographic method of separating rare earth impurities from high purity $Nd_2O_3$, $Sm_2O_3$, $Gd_2O_3$, $Er_2O_3$, $Dy_2O_3$ and $Yb_2O_3$ was studied by using $HCl-NH_4Cl$ as moving phase and P507 as stationary phase. After the impurities were enriched from the eluate by chelant-activated carbon, the active carbon was ashed and the ignited residue was used to prepare the sample electrode for spark source mass spectrometric determination. The impurities in 99.9999% rare earth oxide can be determined by the proposed method with recovery over 80%.
The failure of steam generators (SGs) due to corrosion is one of the most important problems in power plants. Impurities usually accumulate in the hot sides of SG and form deposits on the SG surfaces. In this paper, the sensitivity analysis of the accumulation of water impurities in the heat exchangers of nuclear power plants is presented. The convection-diffusion equation of the liquid phase on the heated surfaces is derived and then solved by the finite volume method. Also, the effects of the thermal-hydraulic parameters in the form of dimensionless numbers, such as $Pe_q$, $Pe_u$, $k_q$(relative solubility of impurity between the steam and water) on the impurities concentration are studied.
