  • Industrial strain Improvement is concerned with developing or modifying microorga-nisms used In production of commercially important fermentation products. The aim is to reduce the production cost by improving productivity of a strain and manipulating specific cilarafteristic such as the ability to utilize cheaper raw materials or resist bacteriophages. The traditional empiri-cal approach to strain improvement is mutation combined with selection and breeding techniques. It is still used by us to improve the productivity of organisms in amino acids. organic acids andenzymes production. The breeding of high L-lysine-producing strain Au112 is one of the outstanding examples of this approach. It is it homoserine auxotroph with AEC, TA double metabolicanalogue resistant markers. The yield reaches 100g/1. Resides, the citric acid-producing organism Aspergillus nuger, Co827, its productivity reches the advanced level in the world, is also the result of a series mutations expecially with Co Y-radiation. The thermostable a-amylaseroducing strain A 4041 is the third example. By combining physical and chemical multations. the strain ,A 4041becomes an asporogenous, catabolite derepressed mutant with rifamycin resistant and methionine, arginine auxotroph markers. The a-amylase activity reaches 200 units/ml. The fourth successful example of mutation in strain improvement is the glucoamylase-producing strain Aspergillus nigerSP56 its enzyme activity is 20,000 units/ml, 4 times of that of the parental strain UV_11. Recently recombinant DNA approach Provides a worth while alternative strategy to Industrial strain improve-ment. This technique had been used by us to increase the thermostable a-amylase production and on some genetic researches.

  • The TOC/DBR and Six Sigma are the most attention-getting concepts for managing manufacturing companies in Korea. Using the ideas and methods of the TOC/DBR, companies can achieve a large reduction of work-in-process and finished-good inventories, significant improvement in scheduling performance, and substantial earnings increase. The Six Sigma approach derives the overall process of selecting the right projects based on their potential to improve performance metrics and selecting/training the right people to get the business results. These two concepts have different backgrounds and different viewpoints for production systems. So, if the two concepts collaborate each other, the synergy effects to innovate production systems can be expected. This paper proposes a new approach to implement the TOC/DBR concepts in production systems. This approach uses some concepts of Six Sigma which stresses educations, project approaches (step by step procedure using a Roadmap), and improvement philosophy.

  • The nesting of two-dimensional patterns onto a given raw sheet has applications in a number industries. It is a common problem often faced by designers in the shipbuilding, garment making, blanking die design, glass and wood industries. This paper presents a multi-stage layout approach for nesting two-dimensional patterns by using artificial intelligence techniques with a relatively short computation time. The raw material with irregular boundaries and internal defects which must be considered in various cases of nesting was also investigated in this study. The proposed nesting approach consists of two stages : initial layout stage and layout improvement stage. The initial layout configuration is achieved by the self-organizing assisted layout(SOAL) algorithm while in the layout improvement stage, the simulated annealing(SA) is adopted for a finer optimization.

  • None of us need to be reminded that these are exceedingly times. The evidence in all about us. Between rising costs and lowering prices, many businesses find profits being depressed almost to the vanishing point. The eating out food business is in just such a profit squeeze. Our ability to compete depends not only on our ability to control the price-cost picture, but to improve its kitchen product system. A kitchen product system is incomplete without a series of built-in improvement procedures. They must be a key part of the system. "improvement" means the continual betterment of all aspects of the operation-its personnel, products, sales, and its costs. These improvements create profits. This study is devoted to a discussion of the application of research methods and techniques to develop of modern kitchen system through the job standardization. Their use in executing other responsibilities related to the process of kitchen system improvement will also be seen. The steps of setting objectives, gathering data, analyzing and interpreting data, and arriving at solutions, conclusions, and/or recommendations are briefly out lined. The material presented emphasizes the need for an improved and systematic approach to the study of problems. It is also implied, of not stated, that the process should not become so mechanical that the principles of creativity are violated. The foregoing steps suggest a systematic approach to kitchen system improvement, finding solutions to problems, improving work methods, instituting changes, followting up on work related to the change. This study has been limited to the truly important points related to each step in the process, it will undoubtedly call to mind other factors for consideration, however, believe that the principles and approach suggested in this study will bring about better methods and improve kitchen operating results.g results.

  • The cafeteria is one of the welfare facilities in the college and crowed with students during lunchtime because of the various menu, saying time and cheap price. In designing the cafeteria, we have to consider the users' needs and the factors which effect on their satisfaction and behavior under the pleasant environment. The purpose of this study is to draw the environmental improvement factors by Post Occupancy Evaluation. A survey about the users' actual condition and environmental satisfaction level and a behavior observation in the field were utilized as the study methode. The 150 copies of questionnaire were completed by students who ate at the cafeteria of W college in Daejeon city. The SPSS 15.0 for Windows was used for a statistical analysis. The results are listed below; two factors were drawn as the improvement elements through the combination of the unsatisfactory items obtained by the descriptive statistics and the influential items by the multi-regression analysis. They are images and approach. In the 'image' category, there us a statistical difference between the present image and prefer image. The users prefer much brighter, warmer, newer, more gorgeous, more cheerful, more clear, more active, more comfortable, and more modern image of cafeteria. In the 'approach', the location of ail existing cafeteria is inaccessible from the classrooms in spite of an important relationship between classrooms and cafeteria. Therefore the complementary plan for convenient approach is demanded for improvement of users' satisfaction.

  • This paper presents a derating design approach for reliability improvement of an aluminum electrolytic capacitor. The capacitor, usually mounted in a printed circuit board, is used to stabilize the circuit. The main failure mechanism of interest is dry-up of the electrolyte that is mainly caused by two stresses-temperature and voltage. The lifetime under these stresses is modeled as a function of these stresses and time using accelerated life testing. Quantitative variation in the lifetime, according to variations in these stresses, is investigated to perform the derating design of the capacitor so that the stress levels are selected to achieve required reliability measures for reliability improvement. Moreover, sensitivity analysis shows which stress would be a more important factor determining the lifetime.

  • Since improved thermal efficiency reduces capacity requirements and energy costs, electricity producers often treat thermal efficiency as a measure of management or economic performance. The conventional measure of the thermal efficiency of a fossil-fuel generation system is the ratio of total electricity generation to the simple sum of energy inputs. As a refined approach, we present a novel thermal efficiency measure using the concept of the Divisia index number. Application of this approach to the Korean power sector shows improvement of thermal efficiency of 1.1% per year during 1970-1998. This is higher than the 0.9% improvement per year given by the conventional method. The difference is attributable to the effect of fuel substitution. In the Divisia decomposition context, we also show the limitations of the popular $T{\ddot{o}}rnqvist$ index formula and the superiority of the Sato-Vartia formula.

  • Faced with large scale of outdoor recreation resources and variety of demanders' desire, it would be necessary for the managers to estimate the values of individual attributes rather than a bundle of characteristics of outdoor recreation sites. By extending the Brown and Mendelsohn's (1984) approach we are able to estimate the beneficial effects of the improvement of individual attributes. Sampling 208 fishermen who visited 11 free fishing sites located in Daegu and Gyeongbuk, the functions of marginal willingness to pay for scenery and non-crowdedness were estimated. If 1 unit of scenery could be improved from its average value a fisherman, on average, would receive benefit of as much as 3,840 won. The average beneficial effect of the non-crowdedness improvement would amount to 2,220 won.

  • This paper presents a new analytical approach and experimental verification for the improvement of noise performance in phased-array receivers. For analysis purposes, a multi-channel array system is converted into an equivalent single-channel system, such that the two presents the identical signal and noise powers at the output, respectively. We define an effective gain, noise figure, and signal-to-noise ratio in the equivalent system. Through the proposed approach, the noise performance of the array receiver is analyzed in a general and straightforward manner and then compared to that of each individual array channel. In addition, the phase noise of the array system is analyzed in a rigorous manner, showing its effective reduction by a factor of the array size. The predicted improvement of the noise performance is experimentally confirmed with a CMOS integrated phased-array receiver.
