  • The potential advantages of the hybrid welding process are improved weld penetration, enhanced gap tolerance, control of weld metal composition, and improved weld quality in comparison to laser or arc welding. Especially, the deep penetration of hybrid welding is very attractive in welding of thick plates. In this study, therefore, the influence of arc power in hybrid welding on detailed bead dimensions at different laser power levels was investigated.

  • This study was performed to investigate the effect of red ginseng extract including some vitamin B groups as test drug on learning and memory in mice. Single and repeated administrations of the test drug improved the acquisition and the process of consolidation in the tests using step-through and step-down apparatus, indicating this test drug improved learning and memory. However, the test drug did not improve scopolamine-induced amnesia. These results suggest that test drug may be useful as a nootropic agent.

  • Objectives: The purpose of the present study was to investigate the antidiarrheal effects of Anjang-san in mice and rats. Methods: We measured the content of condensed tannin in Anjang-san extract, and observed the effects of Anjang-san on the small intestinal and colonic transport of mice, as well as on mice models of diarrhea induced by castor oil and $MgSO_4$, and on rat models of castor oil-induced enteropooling. Results: Anjang-san showed significant inhibitory effects on abnormally increased small intestinal transit induced by pyridostigmine and neostigmine, and inhibitory effects on large intestinal transit. Anjang-san also exhibited antidiarrheal effects on diarrhea induced by $MgSO_4$, and inhibitory effects on castor oil-induced enteropooling. Anjang-san also improved castor oil-induced diarrhea based on simple numbers without statistical significance. Conclusion: These results demonstrate that Anjang-san has significant antidiarrheal properties and attests to its possible utility in functional diarrheas, irritable bowel syndrome and other gastrointestinal disorders based upon further studies.

  • This study was investigated on the change of physico-chemical properties at various mixture ratio of improved Meju and Natto during the aging of soybean paste. pH was increased on the improved Meju with increasing the mixture ratio of Natto, but pH was decreased in Korean traditional Meju. Change of nitrogen compound was 3 times higher and aging was faster in increased ratio of Korean traditional Meju than that of improved Meju. Brown color was not changed as compared to the initial stage, however the value of brown color was higher in the Korean traditional Meju than that of other group. In sensory evaluation, the mixture ratio of improved Meju, Korean traditional Meju and Natto (48 : 48 : 5) was the best acceptables.

  • In case that conventional PRC(Pseudo-Randomized Frequency Carrier) modulation scheme is applied to a three-phase HBML(H-Bridge Multi-Level Inverter), the dominant harmonics spectra appear at twice switching frequency. In this paper, the dominant harmonics spectra spreading effect of the conventional PRC scheme was improved by using three stage MUXs(Multiplexers) and two triangular carriers with fixed frequency which has mutual relation of the twice frequency. To confirm the validity of the improved PRC scheme, the experiment were performed on a 1.5[kw] three-phase HBML based induction motor drives. And, the harmonics spectra of the conventional and improved PRC schemes are compared and discussed.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to investigate the clinical effects of cupping therapy on sleep disorders induced by traffic accidents. Methods : The 46 patients were divided into 2 groups : Exp.group was treated with cupping therapy at bedtime and Con.group was treated except cupping therapy at bedtime. To evaluate the efficiency of cupping therapy, the SMH sleep questionnaire and Visual Analogue Scale(VAS) were applied before treatment and after 7 days treatment. Results : 1. The Exp.group has improved statistical significantly in delaying bedtime and bedtime arousal as compared to the Con.group. 2. The Exp.group was increased in total sleep time but had no statistical significance as compared to the Con.group. 3. The Exp.group was improved in subjective evaluation of satisfaction with sleep, depth of sleep, the overall sleep and difficulty in falling asleep. Conclusions : Cupping therapy at bedtime has clinical effects of improvement of sleep disorder induced by traffic accidents.

  • Aged garlic has been reported to possess beneficial pharmacological activities, including anti-stress and anti-fatigue properties, and to exert protective effects on the cardiovascular system and liver. Pine needles are widely used in folk medicine and as food additives owing to their pharmacological properties such as anti-aging and anti-inflammatory effects. It has long been known that combining certain phytochemicals with other phenols or organic acids can produce synergistic effects. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to develop an optimal formula of aged garlic with added pine needle powder for improved antioxidant activity using the statistical technique of response surface methodology. The antioxidant activities of aged garlic mixed with pine needle powder were confirmed by measuring oxygen radical absorbance capacity and total polyphenol content. An optimized antioxidant formula was identified that contained 5.08 g aged garlic and 1.97 g pine needle powder. The antioxidant activities of the mixture prepared using this optimal formula were significantly higher than the predicted values according to an additive model. Hence, this study confirms that the addition of pine needle powder to aged garlic can improve its antioxidant activity. This study demonstrated an optimal mixing ratio to produce an aged garlic product with improved functionality through the addition of pine needle powder that could be successfully employed by the food industry to prepare functional foods.

  • This study investigated the effects of (-)-sesamin on memory deficits in 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)-lesioned mouse model of Parkinson's disease (PD). MPTP lesion (30 mg/kg/day, 5 days) in mice showed memory deficits including habit learning memory and spatial memory. However, treatment with (-)-sesamin (25 and 50 mg/kg) for 21 days ameliorated memory deficits in MPTP-lesioned mouse model of PD: (-)-sesamin at both doses improved decreases in the retention latency time of the passive avoidance test and the levels of dopamine, norepinephrine, 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid, and homovanillic acid, improved the decreased transfer latency time of the elevated plus-maze test, reduced the increased expression of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor, and increased the reduced phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK1/2) and cyclic AMP-response element binding protein (CREB). These results suggest that (-)-sesamin has protective effects on both habit learning memory and spatial memory deficits via the dopaminergic neurons and NMDA receptor-ERK1/2-CREB system in MPTP-lesioned mouse model of PD, respectively. Therefore, (-)-sesamin may serve as an adjuvant phytonutrient for memory deficits in PD patients.
