The heat transfer characteristics off swirling air jet impinging on a heated flat plate have been investigated experimentally. The main object is to enhance the heat transfer rate by increasing turbulence intensity of impinging jet with a specially designed swirl generator. The mean velocity and turbulent intensity profiles of swirling jet were measured using a hot-wire anemomety. The temperature distribution on the heated flat surface was measured with thermocouples. As a result the swirl effect on the local heat transfer rate on the impinging plate is confined mainly in the small nozzle-to-plate spacings such as L/D<3 at the stagnation region. For small nozzle-to-plate spacings, the local heat transfer in the stagnation region is enhanced from the increased turbulence intensity due to swirl motion, compared with the conventional axisymmetric impinging jet without swirl. For example, the local Nusselt number of swirling jet with swirl number Sw=0.75 and Sw=1 is about 9.7-76% higher than that of conventional impinging jet at the radial location of R/D=0.5. With the increase of the nozzle-to-plate distance, the stagnation heat transfer rate is decreased due to the diminishing axial momentum of the swirling jet. However, the swirling impinging jet for all nozzle-to-plate spacings tested in this study does not enhance the average heat transfer rate.
An experimental study has been conducted to investigate the heat transfer characteristics of syngas/air mixture impinging jet flame with 10% hydrogen content. Effects of impinging distance, Reynolds number as major parameters on surface temperature of stagnation point were examined experimentally by the data acquisitions from k-type thermocouple. There were 2 times of maximum peak point of stagnation point with respect to the impinging distance for the investigation. As reynolds number increases, the nusselt number and convective heat transfer coefficient increased accordingly.

The purpose of this investigation was to characterize nucleate boiling and burn-out heat flux for rectangular free jet with saturated water impinging perpendicularly and upward against a flat uniform heat flux surface. Heat flux measured for Reynolds number based on rectangular nozzle width and for aspect ratio. The result of nucleate boiling heat transfer was presented nondimensional experimental equation including Nusselt, Boiling, Subcooling, Reynolds and Weber number. The effect of aspect ratio of heated surface in the burn-out heat flux had not appeared distinctly. But for the same aspect ratio, burn-out heat flux increased linearly with increment of nozzle exit velocity.

The present study aims to investigate the heat transfer characteristics of a pulsating axisymmetric air jet impinging on a heated wall. An axisymmetric contraction nozzle is used to obtain uniform profiles for the mean velocity and turbulence intensity at the nozzle exit. Measurements of the time averaged temperature on the impingement surface are conducted using a Thermochrornatic Liquid Crystal(TLC) technique for steady and pulsating jets at the jet Reynolds numbers of 20000, 30000 and 40000. Considered are pulsation frequencies of 10 and 20 Hz, corresponding to Strouhal numbers below 0.06 based on nozzle width and jet discharge velocity. In addition, the effect of nozzle-to-plate distances in the range of 2 to 10 on heat transfer characteristics is assessed. The pulsating impinging jet provides more uniform heat transfer coefficient near the impingement region, irrespective of H/D. Based on the measured data, a good correlation as a function of the jet Reynolds and Nusselt numbers is reported. It is also found that an exponent m in the relation of Nu ${\propto}\;Re^m$ depends on both r/D and H/D, by which the impinging jet flows are highly affected.

While many studies on the heat transfer effect of an impinging jet have been published, most studies focus on the downward impinging jet. This study investigates the impinging jet heat transfer phenomenon when water at a temperature of $24^{\circ}C$ impinges on the downward isothermal circular plate at 60, 70, and $80^{\circ}C$ and when the upward round jet nozzle is 4, 6, and 8 mm diameter with a flow rate 3.6, 4.6, and 5.6 L/min, respectively, and when the ratio of the nozzle clearance/nozzle diameter (H/D) is 1. The results showed that, as the nozzle diameter decreases, the heat transfer coefficient increases at a constant flow rate. The correlation equation of $Nu_r$, $Pr_r$, and $Re_{jg}$ is obtained in the impinging and constant velocity flow region $(Nu_r/Pr^{0.4}_r)Dr=4.6[Re_{jg}(r/R_c)Dr]^{0.8}$ at all flow rates, in the deceleration and falling flow regions $(Nu_r/Pr^{0.4}_r)Dr=42.7{\mid}Re_{jg}(r/R_c)Dr-345.7{\mid}^{0.3}$ at 3.6 L/min, $(Nu_r/Pr^{0.4}_r)Dr=92.4{\mid}Re_{jg}(r/R_c)Dr-16.8{\mid}^{0.2}$ at 4.6 L/min, and $(Nu_r/Pr^{0.4}_r)Dr=322.4{\mid}Re_{jg}(r/R_c)Dr-536.2{\mid}^{0.01}$ at 5.6 L/min.
An experimental study was conducted to investigate the flame stability of the synthetic gas (syngas) using an impinging premixed jet burner. Since the syngas mainly consisted of $H_2$ and CO, the $H_2$/CO mixture was simulated as the syngas. $H_2$/CO mixture ratios, fuel/air mixture velocities and equivalence ratios were used as major parameters on the flame stabilitym The role of the impinging plate on the flame stability was also examined. In addition, laminar burning velocities of the $H_2$/CO mixture were predicted numerically to understand the characteristics of the flame stability for the syngas. The increase in the H2 concentration into the syngas brings about the extension of the blowout limit and the reduction in the flashback limit in terms of the stable flame region. The impinging jet plate broadened the blowout limit but does not play important role in changing of the flashback limit. Finally, it was found that the stability region of the flame using the syngas, which is expressed in terms of the mixture velocity and the equivalence ratio in this study, significantly differed from that of $CH_4$.

In the present work, a series of numerical calculations have been conducted on the cooling of a hot surface using an air/water mist jet. In some cooling processes, such as in the glass-tempering process, direct contact between the cold water drops and the hot surface should be avoided, because this may cause surface cracks due to the sharp temperature gradients. Thus, the main focus of this study is finding the appropriate operating conditions for maximum cooling without direct contact between the drops and the surface. A series of numerical experiments have been performed, and, at the same time, those results were compared with those of the previous experiments for verification purposes. The effects of droplet impinging velocity, hot plate temperature, and liquid loading ratio for mono-dispersed drops of various sizes were studied in detail.
This experimental study was carried out to examine the heat transfer characteristics of impinging air jet on a flat plate with a set of right angled triangle rods. Each right angled triangle rod in the array was positioned normal to the flow direction and parallel to the flat plate surface. The clearances from a right angled triangle rod to flat plate surface (C=1, 2 and 4 mm) and the distance from nozzle exit to flat plate (H=100 and 500 mm) were changed for the pitch between each right angled triangle rods (P=40 mm). As a result, heat transfer shows best performance at the clearance of C=1 mm, in case clearance changed, and the average heat transfer enhancement rate increased up to 47% compared to the result of a flat plate without a right angled triangle rod.

The objective of this study was to investigate the characteristics of jet flow and heat transfer caused by trapezoid rods array in impinging jet system. In this study, trapezoid rods have been set up in front of flat plate to serve as a turbulence promoter. The bottom width of trapezoid rod was W=4, 8 mm and oblique angle were 80$^{\circ}$. The space from rods to the heating surface was C=1, 2, 4 mm, the pitch between each rods was P=30, 40, 50 mm, and the distance from nozzle exit to flat plate was H=100, 500 mm. This results were compared with the case without trapezoid rods. As a result, when rods are installed in front of the impinging plate, the acceleration of the jet flow and the eddies due to the rods seem to contribute to the heat transfer enhancement. Among test conditions, the heat transfer performance was best for the condition of W=8 mm, C=1 mm, P=30 mm and H/B=10. The maximum heat transfer rate is about 1.9 times larger than that without trapezoid rods.

Measurements of the local heat transfer coeffcients on a spherically concave surface with a round impinging jet are presented. The liquid crystal transient method was used for these measurements. This method, which is a variation on the transient method, suddenly exposes a preheated wall to an impinging jet while video recording the response of liquid crystals for the measurement of the surface temperature. The Reynolds numbers used were 1,000, 23,000 and 50,000 and the nozzle-to-jet distance was L/d=2, 4, 6, 8, 10. Presented results are compared to previous measurements for flat plate. In the experiment, the local heat transfer Nusselt numbers on a concave surface are higher than those on a flat plate. Maximum Nusselt number at all region occured at L/d=6 and second maximum in the Nusselt number occured at R/d=2 for both Re=50,000 and Re=23,000 in case of L/d=2 and for only Re=50,000 in case of L/d=4. All other cases exhibit monotonically decreasing value of the Nusselt number along the curved surface.
