The Effect of Impinging Land Size on Diesel Spray Behavior in OSKA Type Combustion Chamber (OSKA형 연소실에서 충돌면크기변화가 디젤분무거동에 미치는 영향)

  • OSKA engine was developed to remove the dense core of injection sprays. The engine uses impinging spray on a small pip, which spray after impinging is broken into smaller drops and disperses into fee space in chamber. In this paper the pip size is analyzed to give more dispersion of spray and fuel vapor. The gas phase is modelled by the Eulerian continuum conservation equations of mass, momentum, energy and fuel vapour fraction. The liquid phase is modelled following the discrete droplet model approach in Lagrangian form, and the droplet wall interaction is modelled as a function of the velocity normal to impaction lands. The droplet distributions, vapor fractions and gas flows are analyzed for various injection pressure cases. Numerical results indicate that the land diameter of 5.6mm has the best performance of spray dynamics and vaporization in the test sizes.

  • Many researches have been investigating small direct-injection diesel engines using the spray impacting on walls. Those systems have one or more raised pips to break-up the fuel and spread it widely toward a desired direction in a combustion chamber. In this study, the sizes and heights of the pips are determined by using a computational fluid dynamics code employing non-orthogonal grid systems. In order to find out the suitable pip-shape to a small chamber, the spray behaviors, occupied spary volumes and averaged droplets sizes are calculated with the variation of shape of the pip, such as, size and heights and inclined degree. The desired shape of the impinging land is proposed for the design of combustion system in small diesel engines.

A Numerical Study of Turbulent Flow and Heat Transfer due to Slot-jet impinging on a Moving flat plate (이동평판에 작용하는 슬롯 충돌제트의 유동 및 열전달에 관한 수치적 연구)

  • The confined slot air jet impinging normally on a moving flat surface has been investigated numerically by using commercial CFD code Ansys CFX-V11. Turbulent flows are modeled using k-w turbulence model. Two-dimensional turbulent flow is considered. Calculations were conducted for a nozzle-to-plate spacing of eight slot nozzle width, at three Reynolds number(Re=4500, 6700 and 10,000) and four surface-to-velocity ratios i.e. 0, 0.25, 0.5 and 1. Results are compared against corresponding cases for heat transfer from a stationary plate. Local Nusselt number is calculated under constant wall temperature condition. The analysis reveals that the average Nusselt number increases considerably with the jet exit Reynolds number, but decrease with the plate velocity.

  • The heat transfer characteristics for air jet vertically impinging on a flat plate which had a set of hybrid rod were investigated experimentally. The rod had a cross section made with a half of circular cross section and that of rectangular and was installed in front of the plate. The heating surface was given constant heat flux value of 1020 W/$m^2^{\circ]C$ and the problem parameters investigated were jet Reynolds number, nozzle-to-plate spacing and the rod size. The local and local average Nusselt number characteristics were found to be dependent on the rod size because the flow was disturbed by installing the rod. Higher convective heat transfer rate occurred in the whole plate as well as in the stagnation region.

  • This study investigated heat transfer and flow characteristics of a sweeping jet issued from a rectangular nozzle with a thin plate. A thin vertical aluminum plate was attached on outlet of fluidic oscillator to increase velocity of central area with Coanda effect and enhance heat transfer performance. From visualization and PIV experiments, sweeping jet with a thin plate has larger velocity distribution in center region than that of the normal sweeping jet while oscillating frequency is similar as the normal one. Thermographic phosphor thermometry method was used to visualize the temperature field and Nu distribution of plate with impinging sweeping jet with thin plate. Four Reynolds numbers and three jet-to-wall distances were selected as parameters. It is found that heat transfer performance in the low jet-to-wall spacing was enhanced as the cooled area was expanded. However, when the jet-to-wall spacing became greater than 8dh, heat transfer performance became similar due to reduced impinging velocity.

A study on the characteristics of gasoline spray to impinge on wall (벽면에 충돌하는 가솔린 분무의 특성에 관한 연구)

  • Even though a relatively complete knowledge base has been established for diesel sprays, much of the knowledge cannot be directly translated to correlate the characteristics of gasoline spray. The macroscopic characteristics of gasoline impingement spray was investigated with photographic and image processing technique by Particle Motion Analysis System. The injector with single hole nozzle diameter of 0.28 mm was used in this experiment and the injection duration was selected as 10 msec. The injection pressure with 0.3, 0.35, and 0.4 MPa, impingement distance or 70, 100 and 130m, impingement angle or 0.15, 30 and $45^{\circ}$ were employed for the variables to affect the spray characteristics of impinging spray. It is clear that there is the analogy on the spray tip penetration between the gasoline impinging jet and diesel free jet. The spray tip penetration of impinging gasoline spray is proportional to the quarter power of the time after start of injection. The maximum height of impinging gasoline spray is also proportional to the quarter power of the time regardless of impingement distance, impingement angle and injection pressure. In addition, the effect of impingement angle on the spray tip penetration is significant according to the time after start of injection, even though there is minor effect in the initial stage of time after start of injection. Moreover, there is no remarkable effect of injection pressure on the spray tip Penetration under the experimental condition used in this study.

  • The turbulent heat transfer from a round oblique impinging jet on a concave surface were experimentally investigated. The transient measurement method using liquid crystal was used in this study. In this measurement, a preheated wall was suddenly exposed to an impinging jet while recording the response of liquid crystals to measure surface temperature. The Reynolds numbers were 11000, 23000 and 50000, nozzle-to-surface distance ratio was from 2 to 10 and the surface angles were a =$0^{\circ}\;15^{\circ},\;30^{\circ}and\;40^{\circ}$. Correlations of the stagnation point Nusselt numbers with Reynolds number, jet-to-surface distance ratio and dimensionless surface angle, which account for the surface inclined angle, are presented. The maximum Nusselt numbers, in this experiment, occurred in the direction of upstream. The displacement of the maximum Nusselt number from the stagnation point increases with increasing surface angle or decreasing nozzle-to-surface distance. In this experiment, the maximum displacement is about 0.7 times of the jet nozzle diameter when surface curvature, D/d is 10.

Measurement of the Local Heat Transfer Coefficient on a Concave Surface with a Turbulent round Impinging Jet (오목표면에 분사되는 난류원형충돌제트에 대한 국소열전달계수 측정에 관한 연구)

  • Measurements of the local heat transfer coeffcients on a spherically concave surface with a round impinging jet are presented. The liquid crystal transient method was used for these measurements. This method, which is a variation on the transient method, suddenly exposes a preheated wall to an impinging jet while video recording the response of liquid crystals for the measurement of the surface temperature. The Reynolds numbers used were 1,000, 23,000 and 50,000 and the nozzle-to-jet distance was L/d=2, 4, 6, 8, 10. Presented results are compared to previous measurements for flat plate. In the experiment, the local heat transfer Nusselt numbers on a concave surface are higher than those on a flat plate. Maximum Nusselt number at all region occured at L/d=6 and second maximum in the Nusselt number occured at R/d=2 for both Re=50,000 and Re=23,000 in case of L/d=2 and for only Re=50,000 in case of L/d=4. All other cases exhibit monotonically decreasing value of the Nusselt number along the curved surface.

  • In this paper, experimental study on the wan impingement spray of the common-rail diesel injector is performed. To examine the effect of various factors on the development of spray impinging on the wall, experiments were conducted at the various injection pressures. ambient pressures, wan distances from the injector tip, wall temperatures, and angles of wall inclination. The behaviors of the impingement spray ate visualized by using laser sheet methods and a ICCD camera. It is shown that the spray path penetration of the wall impingement spray increases with the increase of injection pressure, wall distance. wall temperature, wall angle. On the other hand the spray path penetration of the wan impingement spray decreases with the increase of ambient pressure.

  • A spray-wall impingement model for fuel sprays is proposed and implemented as a module into the KIVA-POSTECH code. The model is based on the single droplet experiments. The droplet behaviors after impingement are determined from experimental correlations. Different behaviors of impinged droplets depend on the wall temperature and the critical temperature of the fuel. Fuel film formation is taken into account so that the model can be applicable to any wall temperature and injection conditions. Computational results on a normal and on inclined wall are in good agreement for the spray shape and penetration. More validation against experiments and development of the heat transfer model are needed for further improvement.
