  • Flow field and near-field noise of a centrifugal fan has been studied with an efficient compressible method and STAR-CD. The flow field of the centrifugal fan is assumed to be two-dimensional. Most of the compressible studies have been done by inviscid solver because viscous simulation shows little difference. The near field noise is estimated in terms of sound pressure level in frequency domain transformed from the computed pressure fluctuations using FFT. The simulation has been done on various design elements such as impeller blade shapes, the number of blades and cut-off clearance. The comparison shows that the number of blades has a significant effect on near-field noise without losing aerodynamic performance.

  • One of noticeable features in the cross flow fan is that a working fluid passes through impeller blade twice without distinction between the inlet and exit angles. Also, it does produce higher circumferential velocity than other types of blade at the same flow rate in accordance with the application of the forward curved shape. However, a design theory for the cross-flow fan has not yet been formed owing to an eccentric vortex, which is the remarkable characteristics, occurred in a cross-flow fan. Furthermore, the eccentric vortex, which is difficult to control of the size and position, is the important cause of performance decrease. In this study, experiments are carried out to estimate the similarity of the cross-flow fan with various scales and rotational velocity changes. Pressure coefficients to flow coefficients with various scales of the cross-flow fan are plotted to research the application of the general similarity law of the turbomachinery in the cross-flow fan with Archimedes spital, which is the important factor haying an effect on it.

  • Turbo fan as an air moving device is widely used for its silent characteristics and high efficiency relative to the other centrifugal multi blade impeller. In general, turbo fan is installed with a scroll casing for energy conversion from kinetic one to pressure energy. However, a turbo fan without scroll casing is considered as a present model that is proposed model for compact design of a product In detail, the model has only 4 cutoffs as guiders for 4 separated outlets. Specially, equal distribution of flow rate generated by the model blower is main interest in this investigation. The optimal position of the guider is found by reducing abnormal flows such as reverse flow in each outlet.

  • A centrifugal water chiller using alternative refrigerant R134a have been developed. The prototype was designed to have refrigeration capacity of 300RT. Its compressor employs a single high-speed impeller, airfoil diffuser and collector. Newly developed enhanced tubes were installed in the evaporator and the condenser to reduce the required head for the compressor. Off-design characteristics at various conditions, performance test of the compressor and analysis of the refrigeration cycle were performed. So the probability of use in part load condition was checked and the direction for revision was suggested.

  • The goal of this study is to develop treatment methods for improving the noise quality of Home Appliance Drain Pumps. Developed treatment methods covers the various methods including the control of the water level through the developed electronic circuity and the various modifications over the design of impeller and fan units. In the first part of the studies Dominant noise sources of the pumps are analyzed. Specific noise problems of the pumps are classified on the basis of mechanic and magnetic origins. Factors including the pressure variations at suction head, magnetic interactions with structure, specific fan noises are studied sequentially. The second part of the studies are considered for development and application of treatment methods. Results denoted the basic problems and ways to improve the noise quality by treating the dominant soureces of drain pumps.

  • This paper presents the study on the contact stress analysis of a pair of mating helical gears for turbo blower during rotation. Turbo blowers need high speed rotation of impeller in structure and high rate gear ratio. The use of helical gear indicated that noise was an important problem when the application involves high speeds and large power transmission. An example is presented to investigate the variation of contact stress on a pair of mating gears with contact positions. The variation of contact stress during rotation is compared with the contact stress at the lowest point of single tooth contact(LPSTC) and AGMA Equation for contact stress. In this study, the gear design considering the contact stress on a pair of mating gear is more severe than that of AGMA standard.

  • A small circulating water channel (CWC) for experiments ocean engineering is designed and made through the co-work of a company, MESTEC, and a college, Inha Technical Research Institute. General function of the elements of CWC are explained. The velocities in the test section are measured and analysed to estimate the performance of the CWC. The result of the velocity distribution is acceptable for experiments of ocean engineering.

  • Flows in the cavity with pump out vane are calculated using the CFX-Tascflow CFD code. flow calculations are performed for different values of vane height, numbers, leakage flow rate, and rotational speed. The flow is very complex and three dimensional with strong vortex and leakage flow over the vane. The variations of pressure coefficient and K-factor with these parameters and resulting effects on the thrust and torque are studied. The present study contributes to showing the capability of flow simulation of back cavity with pump-out vane. The calculated results are good enough to be used back cavity design.

  • This paper presents the design procedure of a vertical wind turbine named jet-wheel-turbo turbine and the numerical and experimental verifications. The design parameters such as the rotor inlet angle, the diameter-to-hub ratio, the inlet guide outlet angle and the solidity were optimized to maximize the energy transfer, and to further increase the turbine efficiency by applying the side guide vane and the side opening to the rotor. The maximum power coefficient of 0.59, which is much higher than the ever-designed three-bladed horizontal turbines, was experimentally obtained when the optimal inlet- and side-guide vanes were installed and both sides of the rotor were 80% opened. The maximum power coefficients occur at the tip speed ratio ranging between 0.6 and 0.7. This vertical-axis turbine model can be applied to the large-scale power generation system with the speed and torque control algorithm for the specified wind characteristics.

  • Recently, mixers are being widely used in the water purification plant in order to increase the filtration efficiency. The mixer normally consists of impeller, shaft, hub, reduction gear, and the driving motor. It is one of the key design issues to confirm that the vibration caused by the rotation of the shaft should not coincide with the natural vibration frequency of the shaft itself. The vibration characteristics of the hydrofoil type mixer, which is the most widely used in real plants are evaluated through the finite element modeling and verified by experiment using the mock-up facility. The fundamental natural frequency of the mixer's shaft is found to be around 1.8 Hz which showed in good agreement with the experiment. The higher natural frequencies to the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th modes are also verified by the experiment. Thus the developed model is to be utilized for the structural design of the real mixer system.
