The use of advanced composite materials in many engineering structures has steadily increased during the last decade. Advanced composite materials allow the design engineer to tailor the directional stiffness and the strength of materials as required for the structures. Design variables to the design engineer include multiple material systems. ply orientation, ply thickness, stacking sequence and boundary conditions, in addition to overall structural design parameters. Since the vibration and impact strength of composite cylindrical shell is an important consideration for composite structures design, the reliable prediction method and design methodology should be required. In this study, the optimum design of composite cylindrical shell for maximum natural frequency, buckling strength and impact strength are developed by analytic and numerical method. The effect of parameters such as the various composite material orthotropic properties (CFRP, GFRP, KFRP, Al-CFRP hybrid), the stacking sequences, the shell thickness, and the boundary conditions on structural characteristics are studied extensively.
This paper deals with rocking response behavior of rigid block structure subjected to horizontal excitation. A strict consideration of impact and sliding between the block and base is essential to investigate the rocking vibration characteristics because the rocking behavior were greatly influenced by the impact and sliding motion. Therefore, not only restitution coefficient between the block and base but also the energy dissipation rate which is associated with sliding motion, and the static and kinetic friction coefficient between those should be included in the modeling of rocking system. The analytic program was developed to be able to simulate the experimental responses of the block subjected to horizontal sinusoidal excitations. By using this program, rocking responses were numerically calculated by the nonlinear equations for rocking system. From the response simulation and rocking vibration experiment, the following results were obtained. The rocking responses are affected by the impact motion due to energy dissipation and friction and provide very complex behavior. The toppling condition of the block is also influenced by the impact motion and sliding motion.
In this study we conduct the optimal spot-weld layout design of vehicle body structure considering dynamic stiffness and side impact. We conduct both linear static analysis and nonlinear analysis with a baseline model to verify the process. 13 design variables will be selected for the effect analysis. Then, topology optimization is conducted to each selected design variable. The design constraints are formulated to improve the dynamic stiffness and side impact performance. Objective function is to set the density of weld component. Optimal spot-weld layout design are compared with the baseline model to show the improvement.
In this paper, double exposure holographic interferometry using ruby pulse laser is formed in order to investigate the propagation of transient waves. The vibration characteristics according to the change of impact load direction, i.e., impacted in the shear direction and in the normal direction are analyzed. It was observed that the macroscopic trends of transient wave generation and propagation in the assembly of precipitator plates were almost similar regardless of the change of impact load direction. But the propagation and mixing of transient wave was advanced relatively slowly when impacted in the normal direction.
The purpose of this study is to develop a prediction model for evaluating heavy-weight floor impact sounds in a test building. Three rooms in the test building (slab thickness In and 240mm), which consist of frame concrete structures were tested and modeled. First, the SPL distribution in the receiving room was analyzed by measuring SPL at 90 positions using a bang machine. Then, a vibration model using finite element method is proposed considering the material properties and boundary conditions. In addition, the result of transient analysis was compared with field measurements using a standard heavy-weight impact source. Through a vibro-acoustic simulation program, an acoustic model evaluating the building elements (reflected wall, nor, window and door) was proposed. Finally, validation of the prediction model was conducted by vibro-acoustic analysis with field measurements of noise radiation characteristics in receiving rooms.
Portable communication devices such as laptop computers suffer impact-induced failure in their usage. Drop/impact performance of these products is one of important concerns of product design. Because of the small size of this kind of electronics products, it is very expensive, time-consuming and difficult to conduct drop tests to directly detect the failure mechanism and identify their drop behaviors. Finite element analysis provides a vital, powerful vehicle to solve the problems. The models are created with HYPERMESH, and the analysis is carried out with LS-DYNA3D. The analysis is focused on HDD impact behavior in acceleration peak values.
In this study, we compared and analyzed the floor impact sound insulation performance produced by the rating methods. The rating methods are using reversed A-weighting curve, A-weighted sound pressure levels and arithmetic average. On-site floor impact sound pressure levels of living room and room are measured. The results of this study are 1)the rating using reversed A-weighting curve for heavy-weight impact sound's standard deviation is lower than that of light-weight impact sound, 2)the number of rating using A-weighted sound pressure levels and arithmetic average is larger than that of using reversed A-weighting curve, and 3)the number of rating using reversed A-weighting curve mainly depends on impact sound pressure level of 63Hz in heavy-weight impact sound.
Five floor coverings were tested with three different types of floor structures in the standard test building in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the floor impact sound reduction. The level of floor impact sound reduction is influenced by not only the types of floor coverings but interrelationship between the floor coverings and floor structures. From the tests, it was found that floor coverings were effective in reducing the floor impact sound using the light impact source. In addition, proper mixtures of the floor structure and the floor covering have shown effectiveness to a certain extent in reducing the floor impact sound using the heavy impact source.
The heavy-weight floor impact sound field of the receiving room in a testing building with bearing wall structure was investigated using bang machine and impact ball. The sound field was investigated through the impact sound pressure level distribution by the field measurement and computational analysis. Predicted sound field using the computational analysis agree with measurement result in the low frequency band. Result shows that standard deviations of the single number rating value are about 2dB in each impact source. Particularly, impact sound pressure level at 120cm height in 63Hz octave band was 5dB lower than spatial averaging value. It was found that receiving positions in the ministry of construction and transportation notice should be reconsidered.
Auditory experiments based on subjective responses were undertaken for the heavy and light weight impact noises, rubber ball impact noise and real impact noise. Relations between noise levels and subjective evaluations were also investigated. As a result, it was found that the subjective responses of all floor impact noise sources showed a similar trend except real impact noise. The noise class was rated with the range of sensible satisfaction by investigating the various social responses for the floor impact noise. (omitted)
