Considering for plants and structure under extreme conditions is required for the successful design, especially temperature and pressure. The ductile-brittle transition temperature (DBTT) for the materials under extreme condition needs to be considered. In this study, A-grade mild steel for the LNG carrier and offshore plant was examined by performing low-temperature Charpy V-notch (CVN) impact tests to investigate DBTT and the fracture toughness. The absorbed energy decreased gradually with the experimental temperature, which showed an upper-shelf energy region, lower shelf energy region, and transition temperature indicating DBTT. In addition, the fracture surface morphologies of the mild steels indicated ductile fractures at the upper-shelf energy level, with wide and large-sized dimples, whereas a brittle fracture surface, where was observed at the lower-shelf energy level, with both large and small cleavage facets. Based on the experimental results, ductile brittle transition temperature was estimated in about $-60^{\circ}C$.
This paper describes an experimental study to examine collapse causes of the lifting cable due to brittle failure of an fitting anchor under the lifting works. Also, in this study an collapse mechanism that was obtained from stress analysis was compared with an actual collapse procedure. Fractographical analysis as well as chemical component test, tension test and Charpy V-Notch impact test for the fractured steel members were carried out. And then, its results were compared with that of normal steel members. Circumferential surface flaws were developed at internal facets of the fitting anchor before tensile stress occurred. Hence, a higher stress than nominal stress was occurred at flaws by stress concentration at the crack tip. Also, stress intensity factor of members increased by crack size of the potential flaws. Because the stress intensity factor at the crack tip was greater than critical values(fracture toughness), brittle fracture occurred under the lifting works. It is judged that the main collapse of the lifting cable is due to brittle fracture of the fitting anchor.
This paper presents a study on the crashworthiness of the scaled-down stiffened panels used on a Korean icebreaker. In order to validate the crashworthiness of the panels, this paper provides various mechanical properties such as the results of a CVN test, quasi-static tensile test, and high-speed tensile test at arctic temperatures. Two types of steels (EH32 and FH32) were chosen for the material tests. CVN tests revealed that the two steels were equivalent up to −60℃ in terms of their impact energy absorption capacity. However, the toughness of FH32 was significantly superior to that of EH32. EH32 showed slightly higher flow stresses at all temperature levels compared to FH32. The improvement ratios of the yield strengths, tensile strengths, plastic hardening exponents, etc. for FH32, which were obtained from quasi-static tensile tests, showed an apparent ascending tendency with a decrease in temperature. Dynamic tensile test results were obtained for the two temperatures levels of 20℃ and −60℃ with two plastic strain rate levels of 1 s−1 and 100 s−1. A closed form empirical formula proposed by Choung et al. (2011;2013) was shown to be effective at predicting the flow stress increase due to a strain rate increase.

One of the consequences of the 475 ℃ embrittlement of duplex stainless steels is the reduction of the resistance to localized corrosion. Therefore, the detection of this type of embrittlement before the material exhibits significant loss in toughness, and corrosion resistance is important to ensure the structural integrity of critical components under corrosion threats. In this research, conductivity measurements are performed using the alternating current potential drop (ACPD) technique with using a portable four-point probe as a nondestructive evaluation (NDE) method for detecting the embrittlement in a 2507 (UNS S32750) super duplex stainless steel (SDSS) aged at 475 ℃ from as-received condition to 300 h. The electric conductivity results were compared against two electrochemical tests namely double loop electrochemical potentiokinetic reactivation (DL-EPR) and critical pitting temperature (CPT). Mechanical tests and the microstructure characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging are conducted to track the progress of embrittlement. It is shown that the electric conductivity correlates with the changes in impact energy, microhardness, and CPT corrosion tests result demonstrating the feasibility of the four-point probe as a possible field-deployable method for evaluating the 475 ℃ embrittlement of 2507 SDSS.
Application of a stronger and more durable material for reactor pressure vessels (RPVs) might be an effective way to insure the integrity and increase the efficiency of nuclear power plants. A series of research projects to apply the SA508 Gr.4 steel in ASME code to RPVs are in progress because of its excellent strength and durability compared to commercial RPV steel (SA508 Gr.3 steel). In this study, the microstructural characteristics and mechanical properties of SA508 Gr.3 Mn-Mo-Ni low alloy steel and SA508 Gr.4N Ni-Mo-Cr low alloy steel were investigated. The differences in the stable phases between these two low alloy steels were evaluated by means of a thermodynamic calculation using ThermoCalc. They were then compared to microstructural features and correlated with mechanical properties. Mn-Mo-Ni low alloy steel shows the upper bainite structure that has coarse cementite in the lath boundaries. However, Ni-Mo-Cr low alloy steel shows the mixture of lower bainite and tempered martensite structure that homogeneously precipitates the small carbides such as $M_{23}C_6$ and $M_7C_3$ due to an increase of hardenability and Cr addition. In the mechanical properties, Ni-Mo-Cr low alloy steel has higher strength and toughness than Mn-Mo-Ni low alloy steel. Ni and Cr additions increase the strength by solid solution hardening. In addition, microstructural changes from upper bainite to tempered martensite improve the strength of the low alloy steel by grain refining effect, and the changes in the precipitation behavior by Cr addition improve the ductile-brittle transition behavior along with a toughening effect of Ni addition.
The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of the cooling rate after heat treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties of 2507 duplex stainless steels. Heat treatment was carried out at $1050^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr, followed by controlled cooling. The cooling rates were $175.6{\times}10^{-3}^{\circ}C/s$, $47.8{\times}10^{-3}^{\circ}C/s$, $33.3{\times}10^{-3}^{\circ}C/s$, $16.7{\times}10^{-3}^{\circ}C/s$, $11.7{\times}10^{-3}^{\circ}C/s$, $5.8{\times}10^{-3}^{\circ}C/s$ and $2.8{\times}10^{-3}^{\circ}C/s$, which resulted in variations of the microstructure, such as the fractional change of the ferrite phase and sigma phase formation. Fatigue, hardness, impact and tensile tests were performed on the specimens with different cooling rates. The precipitation of the ${\sigma}$ phase caused a hardness increase and a sharp decrease of toughness and tensile elongation. The fatigue limit of the sample with a cooling rate of $5.8{\times}10^{-3}^{\circ}C/s$ was 26 MPa higher than that of the sample with a cooling rate of $175.6{\times}10^{-3}^{\circ}C/s$. Our observations of the fracture surface confirmed that the higher fatigue resistance of the specimen with a cooling rate of $5.8{\times}10^{-3}^{\circ}C/s$ was caused by the delay of the fatigue crack growth, in addition to higher yield strength.

SAW (Submerged Arc Welding) is often used for ship construction or welding pressure vessels and involves spraying a flux in a powder form to a welding site to a certain thickness and continuously supplying electrode wires therein. This welding method enables high current welding up to 1,500 to 3,000 A. Arc efficiency is higher than 95% and the technique allows clean work as it creates less welding fume, which is composed of fine metal oxide particles, and the arc beam is not exposed. In this study, SM490C-TMC thick plates were heterogeneously welded by SAW. Mechanical properties of welds were measured, and welds were assessed macroscopically and for adhering magnetic particles. The following conclusions were drawn. Bending tests showed no spots exploded on sample surfaces or any other defect, and plastic deformation testing confirmed sufficient weld toughness. These results showed the 1F welding method has no shortcomings in terms of bending performance.
Two groups of oxide dispersion-strengthened reduced-activation ferritic/martensitic steels (A and B) were prepared by adding Y, Ti, and Zr into steels through vacuum induction melting to investigate the inclusions, microstructures, mechanical properties of the alloys. Results showed that particles with Y, Ti, and Zr easily formed. Massive, Zr-rich inclusions were found in B steel. Density of micron inclusions in A steel was 1.42 × 1014 m-3, and density of nanoparticles was 3.61 × 1016 m-3. More and finer MX carbides were found in steel tempered at 650 ℃, and yield strengths (YS) of A and B steel were 714±2 and 664±3.5 MPa. Thermomechanical processing (TMP) retained many dislocations, which improved the mechanical properties. YSs of A and B treated by TMP were 725±3 and 683±4 MPa. The existence of massive Zr-rich inclusions in B steels interrupted the continuity of the matrix and produced microcracks (fracture), which caused a reduction in mechanical properties. The presence of fine prior austenite grain size and inclusions was attributed to the low DBTTs of the A steels; DBTTs of A650 and A700 alloy were -79 and -65 ℃. Tempering temperature reduction and TMP are simple, readily useable methods that can lead to a superior balance of strength and impact toughness in industry applications.

The use of Pipelines for long-distance transportation of crude oil, natural gas and similar applications is increasing and has pivotal importance in recent times. High specific strength plays a crucial role in improving transport efficiency through increased pressure and improved laying efficiency through reduced diameter and weight of line pipes. TRIP-based high-strength and high-ductility alloys comprise a mixture of ferrite, bainite, and retained austenite that provide excellent mechanical properties such as dimensional stability, fatigue strength, and impact toughness. This study performs microstructure analysis using both Nital etching and LePera etching methods. At the time of Nital etching, it is difficult to distinctly observe second phase. However, using LePera etching conditions it is possible to distinctly measure the M/A phase and ferrite matrix. The fraction measurement was done using OM and SEM images which give similar results for the average volume fraction of the phases. Although it is possible to distinguish the M/A phase from the SEM image of the sample subjected to LePera etching. However, using Nital etching is nearly impossible. Nital etching is good at specific phase analysis than LePera etching when using SEM images.
Titanium alloys are widely recognized among engineering materials owing to their impressive mechanical properties, including high strength-to-weight ratios, fracture toughness, resistance to fatigue, and corrosion resistance. Consequently, applications involving titanium alloys are more susceptible to damage from unforeseen events, such as scratches. Nevertheless, the impact of microscopic damage remains an area that requires further investigation. This study delves into the microscopic wear behavior of α-titanium crystal structures when subjected to linear scratch-induced damage conditions, utilizing molecular dynamics simulations as the primary methodology. The configuration of crystal lattice structures plays a crucial role in influencing material properties such as slip, which pertains to the movement of dislocations within the crystal structure. The molecular dynamics technique surpasses the constraints of observing microscopic phenomena over brief intervals, such as sub-nano- or pico-second intervals. First, we demonstrate the localized transformation of lattice structures at the end of initialization, indentation, and wear processes. In addition, we obtain the exerted force on a rigid sphere during scratching under linear movement. Furthermore, we investigate the effect of the relaxation period between indentation and scratch deformation. Finally, we conduct a comparison study of nanoindentation between crystal and amorphous Ti substrates. Thus, this study reveals the underlying physics of the microscopic transformation of the α-titanium crystal structure under wear-like accidental events.
