Current research and development of high performance concrete, together with study of phenomena that are pertinent to impact resistance, have lead to a new generation of barriers with improved properties to resist impact loads. The paper reviews major properties and mechanisms that affect impact resistance of concrete barriers as per criteria that characterize the resistance. These criteria are the perforation limit, penetration depth and the amount of front and rear face damage. From the long-known, single strength parameter that used to represent the barriers' impact resistance, more of the concrete mix ingredients are now considered to be effective in determining it. It is shown that the size and hardness of the aggregates, use of steel fibers and micro-silica have different effects on performance under impact and on the resistance. Additional pertinent phenomena, such as the rate and size effects, confinement and local versus global response, are pointed out with their reference to possible future developments in the design of impact resisting concrete barriers.
Composite rotor blades for rotorcraft have an intrinsic vulnerability to foreign object impact from its inherent structural characteristics of insufficient strength in the thickness direction, which may easily lead to internal structure damage. Therefore, defects and strength reducing effects caused by foreign object impact should be considered in fatigue evaluation of composite blades. For this purpose, the flaw tolerant safe-life and fail-safe concepts were adopted in fatigue evaluation since 1980s, and recently those concepts have been replaced by the damage tolerance concept. In this paper, the relevant standards for fatigue evaluation are analyzed focusing on fiber reinforced composite rotor blades used in rotorcraft. In addition, fatigue evaluation procedure of composite blades considering impact damages is proposed by reviewing the practices implemented through domestic development projects.

Recently, safety diagnosis of the existing structures has been emerged as important issue. In particular, systematical and precise safety diagnostics for steel structures for power substation, have been required. Steel structures for power substation are under the periodical impact loads from operations of gas insulated switchgear. These loading condition accelerates damage and aging of structure. The objective of this research is to evaluate damage of structure under periodical impact loads. To evaluate the integrity of structures as organizing mathematical models including the dynamic characteristics of structures, Frequency Domain Decomposition method was choiced and an algorism was proposed. For verifying this methods and algorism, a mathematical model is composed of the development of a variety of reverse analysis and a signal processing technology reflecting physical damage of structures. A series of analysis and test results indicatge that proposed method has a confidence for applying a filed test. Therefore, it is expected to be able to take advantage of system identification to detect damage for the maintenance and management of steel structures under periodical impact loads such as power substation.

The wave-impact load on offshore structures can be divided into green-water and wave-slamming impact loads. These wave impact loads are known to have strong nonlinear characteristics. Although the wave impact loads are dealt with in the current classification rules in the shipping industry, their strong nonlinear characteristics are not considered in detail. Therefore, to investigate these characteristics, wave-impact loads induced by a breaking wave on a circular cylinder were analyzed. A model test was carried out to measure the wave-impact loads due to breaking waves in a two-dimensional (2D) wave tank. To generate a breaking wave, the focusing wave method was applied. A series of 2D tank tests under a horizontal wave impact was carried out to investigate the structural responses of the cylindrical structure, which were obtained from the measured model test data. According to the results, we proposed a structural damage-estimation procedure of an offshore tubular member due to a wave impact load. Furthermore, a recommended wave-impact load is suggested that considers the minimum required thickness of each member. From the experimental results, we found that the required minimum thickness is dependent on the impact pressure located in a three-dimensional space on the surface of a tubular member.

A series of tests was conducted to study the behaviour of steel-composite sandwich beams under low velocity hard impact. Damage characteristic and performance of sandwich beams with different spacing of shear connector were evaluated under impact loading. Thin steel plates were used as top and bottom skins of the sandwich beams and plain concrete was used as the core material. Shear connectors were provided by welding of angle sections on steel plates. The sandwich beams were impacted at their midpoint by a hemi-spherical nose shaped projectile dropped from various heights. Strains on steel plates were measured to study the effects of impact velocity or impact momentum on the performance of sandwich beams. Spacing of shear connectors is found to have significant effects on the impact response of the beams.
In this study, the impact characteristics of subsea pipelines that were installed in various soil types and burial depths were evaluated by a numerical method. An impact scenario replicated a dropped ship anchor that fell vertically and impacted an installed subsea pipeline. In order to calculate the impact force through terminal velocity, FLUENT, a computational fluid dynamic program and MDM (Moving Deforming Mesh) technique were applied. Next, a dynamic finite element program, ANSYS Explicit Dynamics, was used for impact analysis between the anchor and pipeline (or, subsea if they were buried). Three soil types were considered: loose sand, dense sand and soft clay by applying the Mohr-coulomb model to the seabed. The buried depth was assumed to be 0 m, 1 m and 2 m. In conclusion, a subsea pipeline was the most stable when buried in dense sand at a depth of 2 m to prevent impact damage.

This study was investigated the nondestructive characteristics of the damage caused by low-velocity impact on symmetric cross-ply laminates. These laminates were $[0^{\circ}/90^{\circ}]{_{16s,}}\;{_{24s,}}\;{_{32s,}}\;{_{48s}}$, that is, the thickness was 2, 3, 4 and 6 mm. The impact machine, model 8250 Dynatup Instron, was used a drop-weight type with gravity. The impact velocities used in experiment were 0.75, 0.90, 1.05, 1.20 and 1.35 m/sec. The load and deformation were increased as impact velocity increase. Even if the load increased with laminates thickness in same impact velocity, the deformation decreased. The extensional velocity was a quick as laminate thickness increase in same impact velocity and as impact velocity increase in same laminate thickness. In ultrasonic scans, damaged area was represented an dimmed zone. This is due to the fact that the wave, after having been partially reflected by the defects, has not enough energy to tough the oposite side or to come back from it. The damaged laminate areas were different according to the laminate thickness and the impact velocity. The extensional velocities became lower in if direction and higher in $0^{\circ}$ direction when the size of the defects increases. But, it was difficult to draw any conclusion for the extensional velocities in $45^{\circ}$ direction.
The study investigated the nondestructive characteristics of damage, caused by law-velocity impact, on symmetric cross-ply laminates, composed of [0o/90o]16s, 24s, 32s, 48s. The thickness of the laminates was 2, 3, 4 and 6 mm, respectively. The impact machine used, Model 8250 Dynatup Instron, was a drop-weight type that employed gravity. The impact velocities used in this experiment were 0.75, 0.90, 1.05, 1.20 and 1.35 m/sec, respectively. Both the load and the deformation increased when the impact velocity was increased. Further, when the load increased with the laminate thickness in the same impact velocity, the deformation still decreased. The extensional velocity was quick, as the laminate thickness increased in the same impact velocity and the impact velocity increased in the same laminate thickness. In the ultrasonic scans, the damaged area represented a dimmed zone. This is due to the fact that the wave, after the partial reflection by the deflects, does not have enough energy to touch the opposite side or to come back from it. The damaged laminate areas differed, according to the laminate thickness and the impact velocity. The extensional velocities are lower in the 0o direction and higher in the 90o direction, when the size of the defect increases. However, it was difficult to draw any conclusion for the extensional velocities in the 45o direction.
Progressing from weather forecasts and warnings to multi-hazard impact-based forecast and warning services represents a paradigm shift in service delivery. Urban flooding is a typical meteorological disaster. This study proposes support plan for urban flooding impact-based forecast by providing inundation risk matrix. To achieve this goal, we first configured storm sewer management model (SWMM) to analyze 1D pipe networks and then grid based inundation analysis model (GIAM) to analyze 2D inundation depth over the Gangnam drainage area with $7.4km^2$. The accuracy of the simulated inundation results for heavy rainfall in 2010 and 2011 are 0.61 and 0.57 in POD index, respectively. 20 inundation scenarios responding on rainfall scenarios with 10~200 mm interval are produced for 60 and 120 minutes of rainfall duration. When the inundation damage thresholds are defined as pre-occurrence stage, occurrence stage to $0.01km^2$, 0.01 to $0.1km^2$, and $0.1km^2$ or more in area with a depth of 0.5 m or more, rainfall thresholds responding on each inundation damage threshold results in: 0 to 20 mm, 20 to 50 mm, 50 to 80 mm, and 80 mm or more in the rainfall duration 60 minutes and 0 to 30 mm, 30 to 70 mm, 70 to 110 mm, and 110 mm or more in the rainfall duration 120 minutes. Rainfall thresholds as a trigger of urban inundation damage can be used to form an inundation risk matrix. It is expected to be used for urban flood impact forecasting.
This paper investigates the role of the masonry infills on the correlation between widely used earthquake Intensity Measures (IMs) and the damage state of 3D R/C buildings taking into account the orientation of the seismic input. For the purposes of the investigation an extensive parametric study is conducted using 60 R/C buildings with different heights, structural systems and masonry infills' distributions. The results reveal that the correlation between the IMs and the seismic damage can be strongly affected by the masonry infills' distribution, depending on the special characteristics of the structural system, the number of stories and the incident angle.
