  • Precision of theoretical group velocity of waves in shell structures was discussed for the purpose of source localization of loose parts impact in pressure vessels of nuclear power plants. Estimating exact location of loose parts impact inside a reactor or a steam generator is very important in safety management of a NPP. Evaluation of correct propagation velocity of impact signals in pressure vessels, most of which are shell structures, is essential in impact source localization. Theoretical group velocities of impact signals in a plate and a shell were calculated by wave equations and compared to the velocities measured experimentally in a plate specimen and a scale model of a nuclear reactor. The wave equation applicable to source localization algorithm in shell structures was chosen by the study.

  • The aim of this paper is to present the method of identifying the impact location on the plate. This basic research has the future purpose to achieve the human-interaction technology based on the signal processing, piezoelectric materials, and wave propagation. The present work concerning the location identification of a single impact on the plate simulated the waveform numerically generated by impact force and applied the SWFOM(sliced Wigner higher fourth order moment) to the waveform to get the arrival time differences due to impact force between three sensors attached to the plate. The simulated signal is useful to get the information for time interval for the only direct wave. This information is used the source localization by using experimental work. The measured signal is also used for source localization of a single impact based on the higher order time frequency as a novel work.

  • Due to the degradation of beamforming properties at angles close to $0^{\circ}$ to $180^{\circ}$, linear array does not have a complete $180^{\circ}$ inspection range but a smaller one. This paper develops a improved sensor array with two additional sensors above and below the linear sensor array, and presents time difference and two dimensional multiple signal classification (2D-MUSIC) based impact localization for omni-directional localization on composite structures. Firstly, the arrival times of impact signal observed by two additional sensors are determined using the wavelet transform and compared, and the direction range of impact source can be decided in general, $0^{\circ}$ to $180^{\circ}$ or $180^{\circ}$ to $360^{\circ}$. And then, 2D-MUSIC based spatial spectrum formula using uniform linear array is applied for locate accurate position of impact source. When the arrival time of impact signal observed by two additional sensors is equal, the direction of impact source can be located at $0^{\circ}$ or $180^{\circ}$ by comparing the first and last sensor of linear array. And then the distance is estimated by time difference algorithm. To verify the proposed approach, it is applied to a quasi-isotropic epoxy laminate plate and a stiffened composite panel. The results are in good agreement with the actual impact occurring position.

  • This paper presents novel research into the source localization of multiple impacts. Source localization technology for single impact loads in a plate structure has been used for health monitoring. Most of research on source localization has been focused only on the localization of single impacts. Overlapping of dispersive waves induced by multiple impacts and reflection of those waves from the edge of the plate make it difficult to localize the sources of multiple impacts using traditional source localization technology. The method solving the overlapping problem and the reflection problem is presented in the paper. The suggested method is based on pre-signal processing technology using band pass filter and optimal filter. Results from numerical simulation and from experimentation are presented, and these verify the capability of the proposed method.

  • A structural health monitoring (SHM) technique for locating impact position in a composite plate is presented in this paper. The technique employs a single sensor and spatial focusing properties of time reversal (TR) and inverse filtering (IF). We first examine the focusing effect of back-propagated signal at the impact position and its surroundings through simulation. Impact experiments are then carried out and the localization images are found using the TR and IF signal processing, respectively. Both techniques provide accurate impact location results. Compared to existing techniques for locating impact or acoustic emission source, the proposed methods have the benefits of using a single sensor and not requiring knowledge of material properties and geometry of structures. Furthermore, it does not depend on a particular mode of dispersive Lamb waves that is frequently used in the SHM of plate-like structures.

  • This paper presents the novel work for source localization of serial multiple impacts in a plate sructure. It is difficult to identify the source of serial multiple impacts with the current source localization techenology(SLT) because of the overlapping of dispersive wave induced by multiple impacts and the reflaction from the edge of the plate. In this paper, the new method is suggested for source localization. The method is developed based on the SLT with pre-signal processing such as some limitation for the selection of three sensors, the frequency range for TFA and impact time interval. Results from numerical simulation and experiment in isotropic plate structure are presented, which show the capability of the proposed method.

The method employs a single sensor and spatial focusing properties of time reversal(TR) and inverse filtering(IF). We first examine the spatial focusing efficiency of both approaches at the impact position and its surroundings through impact experiments. • An air-conditioner has various noise sources such as cooling fan noise, pumping noise, flow noise and impact noise. Among these, impact noise is the most unpleasant source. This is because the noise is produced in indoor unit of air-conditioner. To control the noise source effectively, first we must identify the noise sources. When we identify impact noise source, the measurement have to be carried out simultaneously. So we use beamforming method that requires less measurement points than intensity method and acoustic holography. The objective of this paper is to estimate the location of impact source. This objective can be achieved by using minimum variance cepstrum that is able to detect impulse embedded in noise. In this study, modified beamforming method based on cepstrum domain is proposed. Then this method applied to air-conditioner noise sources which produce impact noise.

  • This paper addresses the way in which we can find where impact noise sources are. Specifically, we have an interest in the case that the signal is embedded in noise. We propose a signal processing method that can identify impulsive sources’location. The method is robust with respect to noise; spatially distributed noise. This has been achieved by a beamforming method with regard to cepstrum domain is used. It is noteworthy that the cepstrum has the ability to detect periodic pulse signal in noise. Numerical simulation and experiments are performed to verify the method. Results show that the proposed technique is quite powerful for localizing the faults in noisy environments. The method also required less microphones than conventional beamforming method.
