소형시험편의 Master Curve 방법을 이용한 원자로 압력용기강의 파괴인성 천이특성평가 (Evaluation of the Fracture Toughness Transition Characteristics of RPV Steels Based on the ASTM Master Curve Method Using Small Specimens)

  • Fracture toughness of five different reactor pressure vessel steels was characterized in the transition temperature region by the ASTM E1921-97 standard method using Charpy-sized small specimens. T he predominant fracture mode of the tested steels was transgranular cleavage in the test conditions. A statistical analysis based on the Weibull distribution was applied to the interpretation of the scattered fracture toughness data. The size-dependence of the measured fracture toughness values was also well predicted by means of the Weibull probabilistic analysis. The measured fracture toughness transition curves followed the temperature-dependence of the ASTM master curve within the expected scatter bands. Therefore, the fracture toughness characteristics in the transition region could be described by a single parameter, so-called the reference temperature (T。), for a given steel. The determined reference temperatures of the tested materials could not be correlated with the conventional index temperatures from Charpy impact tests.

  • The notched Charpy and Izod impact tests are the most prevalent techniques used to characterize the effects of high impulse loads on ploymeric materials. An analysis method for rubber toughened PVC is suggested to evaluate critical strain energy release rates(Gc) from the Charpy impact energy measurements. An Instrumented Charpy Impact tester was used to extract ancillary information concerning fracture properties in addition to total fracture properties and maximum critical loads. The stress intensity factor Kd was computed for varying amounts of rubber contents from the obtained maximum critical loads and also toughening effects were investigated as well.

  • In this study, model for arrest toughness is proposed in consideration of fracture behavior of composite materials. Also, the probabilistic model is proposed to describe the variability of arrest toughness due to the nonhomogeneity of material. For these models. experiments were conducted on the Carbon/Epoxy composite plates with various thickness using the impact hammer. The elastic work fatter used in J-Integral is applicable to the evaluation of energy release rate. The fracture behavior call be described by crack arrest concept and the arrest toughness is independent of the delamination size. Additionally, a probabilistic characteristics of arrest toughness is well described by the Weibull distribution function. An increasing of thickness raises a variation of arrest toughness.

  • The influence of heat input on fracture toughness was investigated in SAW weldments, which were prepared at two different welding conditions in API 2W Gr.50 and EN10225 5420. By examining the fracture initiation point, refined areas(ICHAZ and SCHAZ) in weld metal was identified as local brittle zone, in which M-A constituents and coarsed grain size were observed. Impact values showed the most significant difference at root portion, and CTOD transition temperature was related with impact values obtained at root portion. Hardness values in refined area were less than columnar microstructure about 20 HV5.

  • Miniaturized specimen technology is useful to characterize the mechanical behavior using a minimum volume of material, because it is almost impossible to sample the conventional specimen for the fracture toughness test without damage to equipment. Test material was 1Cr-1Mo-0.25V steel which was widely used for turbine rotor material. Two kinds of miniaturized impact specimens were prepared, i.e., miniaturized specimen with side groove and without side groove. The correlation between ductile brittle transition temperature(DBTT) of full size impact specimen and that of miniaturized impact specimen was made. The characteristics of miniaturized impact specimens technique as well as fracture stress were discussed. Finally, we concluded that the characteristics of fracture stress change on aging time were similar to that of DBTT.

FCAW 용접부의 인성에 미치는 Root Gap의 영향 (Effect of root gaps on toughness of FCAW weld metal)

  • Both impact and fracture toughnesses were investigated with root gaps in FCAW weld metals at room temperature and 0.deg.C. The maximum impact value was obtained at the root gap of 16mm for 1G position weld metal, and the impact value of 3G position weld metals also showed the maximum impact value at the root gap of 12mm. However, the fracture toughnes(CTOD)values tend to decrease with increasing root gaps at both temperatures in 1G weld metal. Bending test also showed satisfactory results with all of root gaps investigated. Based on this result, it becomes possible to apply wide root gaps in real projects in both aspects of toughness and bending resistance.

Mechanical testing of the behavior of steel 1.7147 at different temperatures

  • The paper provides the test results and analysis on the behavior of steel 1.7147 at different temperatures. Mechanical uniaxial tests were used to determine mechanical properties, resistance to creep and Charpy impact tests to determine impact energy. Test results are presented in the form of engineering stress-strain diagrams, creep curves as well as numerical data related to impact energy. The results show that the tensile strength has the highest value at room temperature, and the same goes for the yield strength as well as for modulus of elasticity. After room temperature both of mentioned properties decrease with temperature increasing. Some of creep curves were modeled using rheological models and analytical equation. Based on Charpy impact energy an assessment of fracture toughness was made.

  • Cemented carbides, best known for their superior mechanical properties such as high strength, high hardness and high wear resistance, have a wide range of industrial applications including metal working tools, mining tools, and wear resistance components. The cobalt has been used as a binder in the WC-based hard composites due to its outstanding wetting and adhesion characteristics even though its expensiveness. Therefore many studies attempted to find a better substitute for cobalt as binder to decrease production costs. This investigation is a pre-step to study dynamic fracture characteristic evaluation of a WC-Co hardmetal were evaluated by using the instrumented Charpy impact testing procedures. It was found that the dynamic characteristics of used strain amplifier were very important experimental factors to extract valid dynamic fracturing data in WC-Co specimens. It was suggested by showing some experimental examples that when we wished to evaluate dynamic fracture toughness for cemented carbide composites by using the instrumented Charpy impact testing procedure, a careful attention must be given to obtain valid results.

  • 복합재료는 비강도, 비강성 및 내부식성 등이 우수하여 항공우주산업뿐만 아니라 다양한 산업에서 사용되고 있다. 그러나 복합재료는 충격에 취약하고 이러한 충격은 복합 재료 내부의 균열 형성과 균열 성장으로 이어져 구조 파단의 원인이 된다. 본 논문에서는 음향 방출 신호 및 유한요소해석(Finite element analysis, FEA)을 이용하여 복합재 적층판의 Mode I 파괴 모드의 특성을 분석하였다. DCB 시험은 탄소/에폭시 적층판의 Mode I 파괴 특성을 분석하기 위하여 수행되었고 시편의 파괴에 의해서 발생되는 탄성파를 측정하기 위하여 시편에 음향 방출 센서를 부착하였다. 누적 음향 방출 에너지와 균열 선단 위치의 관계를 이용하여 시편의 파괴 인성(Fracture toughness, GI)을 계산하였다. 계산된 파괴 인성 값을 유한요소모델에 적용하여 해석을 수행하였고 하중-변위 곡선 및 균열 길이-변위 곡선을 통하여 DCB 시험 결과와 비교/분석하였다. 유한요소해석 및 DCB 시험의 결과가 잘 일치함을 보였다.

  • The effects of Ti addition on microstructure and mechanical properties of (Al+Xat.%Ti)2at%B (X=0.5, 1, 2) fabricated by mechanical alloying and spark plasma sintering (SPS) were investigated. These alloys were prepared by high energy ball milling (attritor) and then fracture toughness was investigated by using a charpy impact tester. The SPS method was used to consolidate (Al+Xat.%Ti)fat.%B with the pressure of 50MPa. The powders were successfully consolidated to alloy which the theoretical density is 99%. It was confirmed that the fracture toughness of Al-Bat.% matrix composites was increased by the addition of Ti.
