  • The innate immune response serves as a first-line-of-defense mechanism for a host against viral infection. Viruses must therefore subvert this anti-viral response in order to establish an efficient life cycle. In line with this fact, Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) encodes numerous genes that function as immunomodulatory proteins to antagonize the host immune system. One such mechanism through which KSHV evades the host immunity is by encoding a viral homolog of cellular interferon (IFN) regulatory factors (IRFs), known as vIRFs. Herein, we summarize recent advances in the study of the immunomodulatory strategies of KSHV vIRFs and their effects on KSHV-associated pathogenesis.

  • In this paper, the frequency compensator for digital protective relay is introduced. Due to sudden appearance of generation-load or fault in power system, the frequency can deviate from its nominal value. The Orthogonal filter adopted to digital protective relay is exposed to the problem. Therefore, the frequency variation makes a difficult to protective function and power measurement in digital protective relay. The essential property of the proposed algorithm presented is its outstanding immunity to both signal orthogonal component magnitudes and DFT filter gain variations which ensures below 0.05Hz accuracy of estimation. Additionally, the proposed method has excellent characteristics with low signal sampling rate. Based on the frequency estimation, author design under frequency protection relay for generator and verifies its performance with several experimental tests.

  • Stems and roots of Acanthopanax koreanum Nakai were extracted with water and treated on immune cells in order to determine their immunomodulatory activites. Various Th-1 type cytokines were measured using ELISA including interleukin (IL)-2, IL-12, interferon-gamma (IFN-$gamma$), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-$\alpha$) secreted by dendritic cells, T-cells, intestinal epithelial cells, natural killer cells, and macrophages. As a result, there was a significant increase in IL-12 and IFN-$\gamma$, secretion, but there was no change in the secretion of TNF-$alpha$. Additionally T-cells slightly increased the secretion of IL-2, but there was a significant increase of IL-2 in intestinal epithelial cells. Therefore, our results suggest that A. koreanum Nakai may act as an immunomodulator by stimulating the cell-mediated immunity which can help the immune system defend against infections or cancer cells.

  • The intestinal immune system can discriminate between harmful and unharmful antigens and do not provoke productive immunity to unharmful antigen. Thus oral administration of antigen is one of classical methods for inducing antigen-specific immune tolerance in the periphery. Furthermore, oral tolerance has been investigated for the treatment of autoimmune disorders in human clinical trials. However, the detail mechanism of oral tolerance and contributing factors are not defined clearly at this time. Recent studies demonstrate unique types of immune cell that suppressing immune response, such as regulatory T cell and tolerogenic dendritic cell. This article reviews the factors involved in oral tolerance and discusses our current understanding base on the recent literatures and our works.

  • Data Communication by sending pulse train and verifying the lock-in of a phase locked loop in receiving end is studied. The noise rejection property inherent to PLL is analysed. By using about six pulses in a train, data transimission rate of 20k bit/sec. in a telephone cable is achieved, thus permitting high speed data communication and an exellent immunity against noise.

  • An image data compression method for a digital VCR must satisfy special requirements such as high speed playback. various edting capabilities and error concealment to provide immunity to tape dropouts. Taking these requirements requirements into consideration, this paper proposes a new interframe subband coding algorithm for a digital VCR. In the proposed method, continuous input images are fist partitioned into four frequency bands. The lowest frequency subband is coded with 3-D block adaptive quantization that removes the level redundancy within each level. The other higher frequency subbands are coded by an intraframe coding method using the property of the human visual system. To keep reasonable image quality in high speed palyback, a segment forming method in the frequency domaing is also proposed Computer simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm has the potential of achieving virtually lossless compression in normal play and produces an image with less mosaic errors in high speed play.

  • A microculture technique for the mixed lymphocyte culture test(MLC) in the sheep is described. The optimal incubation periods for the MLC are varied from 4 to 6 days depending on the sources of lymphocytes. It is found that a 2.5:1 stimulator-responder cell ratio and the responder cell concentration of $1{\times}10^5$ cells/well produce the highest($^3H$)-thymidine incorporation. Moreover cryopreservation of bovine lymphocytes results in satisfactory and reproducible MLC reaction. It is also evident that the MLC reactions of the sheep are under the control of histocompatibility matching between the stimulator cells and the responder cells. Significance of the technique as a too! for study on cell mediated immunity in sheep system, either normal or squamous cell carcinoma-bearing, are discussed.

  • Applications of the fiber optic sensing are glowing rapidly, particularly in situations where size, weight, speed, and immunity to electromagnetic interference are important considerations. The fiber optic current sensors have been developed for low frequency(60Hz) metering in electric power systems. But we try measure to high frequency large current by fiber optic current sensor based on Bi substituted rare earth iron garnet. In this paper, we report the linearity to 500 amperes and frequency response of signal processor and a result of detection the standard impulse large current of fiber optic impulse sensor system.

  • This paper shows the development of flexible force sensor using the fiber Bragg grating. This force sensor consists of a Bragg grating fiber and flexible silicone rubber (DC184, Dow corning co. Ltd). This sensor does not have special structure to maximize the deflection or elongation, but have good sensitivity and very flexible characteristics. In addition, this sensor has the immunity to the electro magnetic field and can be multiplexed easily, which is inherited from the characteristics of fiber Bragg grating sensor. In the future, this sensor can be utilized the tactile sensor system minimizing the sensor size and developing the fabrication method.

  • Pasteurella multocida Pasteurella multocida toxin (PMT) is a causal pathogenin atrophic rhinitis in pigs. To investigate the protective immunity and vaccination effect of recombinantPMT, the gene for PMT was isolated from the infective P. multocida D:4. The 2.3 kb XhoI/PstI fragment(PMT2.3) of PMT gene was expressed in E. coli BL21 (DE3) using the induced expression vector system. The recombinant protein of PMT2.3 having molecular weight of 84 kDa was purified by Ni-afinitycolumn chromatography. The PMT2.3 raised slightly less anti-PMT antibody titer than formalin-killedwhole cel, however, it showed more protective imunity against P. multocida D:4 infection in vaccinationand chalenge.
