The aim of this study was to determine the effects of breeder age and stocking density on performance, carcass characteristics and some stress parameters (H-L ratio, serum glucose, cholesterol and triglyceride levels, tonic immobility test (TI), antibody production, relative asymmetry (RA) and external appearances). This experiment was carried out with 705 one-day old male broiler chicks (Ross 308) obtained from three different ages of broiler breeder (32, 48 and 61 wks). Each age group was randomly divided into two stocking density groups (11.9 and 17.5 broilers per $m^2$) with 5 replications per group. The experimental period was 6 weeks. Broilers from 32 wk-old breeders had lower initial weight (p<0.001), body weight gain of the first 3 week of rearing (p<0.01), the percentage of abdominal fat (p<0.001) and serum cholesterol level (p<0.01); higher percentage of gizzard (p<0.01) and longer TI duration (p<0.001) than those from 48 and 61 wk-old breeders. Broilers reared at 17.5 b/m2 had lower final BW, body weight gain, feed consumption, feather condition and foot health (p<0.001), higher percentage of heart, H-L ratio, serum glucose and cholesterol levels (p<0.001), and longer TI durations (p<0.001). There were no significant interactions in examined parameters except for feed to gain ratio between breeder age and stocking density.

The etiology of most psychiatric disorders is still incompletely understood. However, growing evidence suggests that stress is a potent environmental risk factor for depression and anxiety. In rodents, various stress paradigms have been developed, but psychosocial stress paradigms have received more attention than non-social stress paradigms because psychosocial stress is more prevalent in humans. Interestingly, some recent studies suggest that chronic psychosocial stress and social isolation affects mainly anxiety-related behaviors in mice. However, it is unclear whether chronic non-social stress induces both depression- and anxiety-related phenotypes or induces one specific phenotype in mice. In the present study, we examined the behavioral consequences of three chronic non-social stress paradigms: chronic predictable (restraint) stress (CPS), chronic unpredictable stress (CUS), and repeated corticosterone-HBC complex injection (RCI). Each of the three paradigms induced mild to severe depression/despair-like behaviors in mice and resulted in increased immobility in a tail suspension test. However, anxiety-related phenotypes, thigmotaxis and explorative behaviors, were not changed by the three paradigms. These results suggest that depression- and anxiety-related phenotypes can be dissociated in mouse stress models and that social and non-social stressors might affect brain circuits and behaviors differently.
Purpose: This study aimed to: 1) determine the core nursing interventions, and 2) compare acute interventions with subacute interventions recorded in the nursing notes of patients with cerebrovascular accidents (CVA). Methods: The nursing records covering the first 10 days of 30 patients with a CVA who were admitted from January to December 2004 at C University Hospital in Korea were examined. Data was collected using the nursing interventions classification (NIC) from January to April 2005. Finally, data analysis was carried out using mean, SD, and paired t-test according to domains, classes, and interventions. Results: The most frequent nursing intervention at both stage was 'Neurologic monitoring'. There were differences in interventions belonging to the 'Physiological: complex,' 'Behavioral,' 'Safety,' and 'Health system' domains between the acute and subacute stages. The frequency of interventions belonging to the 'Immobility management,' 'Neurological management,' 'Tissue perfusion management,' 'Patient education,' 'Risk management,' 'Health system mediation,' and 'Information management' classes at the acute stage was higher compared to the subacute stage. Conclusions: This study found out that nurses relatively recorded more nursing interventions during the acute stage hence the unsuccessful documentation of the subacute stage particularly in describing the specific nursing interventions at this stage.
The water flea has been used as a test organism of toxicity test for surface water. Toxicity test with water flea is categorized into two parts. One is acute toxicity test with observing immobility and mortality and the other is chronic toxicity test determined by survival and reproduction of water flea. Heartbeat measurement of water flea was designed as a short-term toxicity test in this study. Direct measurement of heartbeat under microscope by aid of video camera gives and early diagnosis of mortality in short time. Therefore, the effects of measuring illumination, measuring time, and non-feeding during the test on heartbeat of water flea was evaluated to establish a new test approach. Test organisms used in this study are Daphnia magna, a well standardizes toxicity test organism, and Simocephalus mixtus, a newly refined organism $IC_{50}$ values of these test organism by heartbeat measurement were compared and discussed. It was found that toxicity test by heartbeat measurement was a reproducible, easy and simple method accomplished in a few hours.

Purpose: This study was done to identify the Domains, Classes, labels and nursing activities of nursing interventions used with 117 patients who were admitted to orthopedic nursing units. Method: Data were collected in January and February, 2004 using a computerized nursing process program that contained nursing diagnosis-outcome-intervention (NNN) linkages. The program was developed by the researcher. Frequencies and percentages were used in the analysis. Results: Sixty-five nursing intervention labels were identified. The Domains of the nursing interventions showed higher percentages for 'physiological: basic' (75.9%), 'physiological: complex' (12.9%), 'behavioral'(7.8%) 'family'(1.3%), and 'safety'(1.1%). The Classes of nursing interventions showed higher percentages for 'activity and exercise management'(30.8%), 'physical comfort promotion'(19.3%), 'immobility management'(14.5%), 'drug management'(8.1%), and 'coping assistance'(5.6%). Nursing intervention labels showed higher percentages for 'pain management'(14.7%), 'body mechanics promotion'(8.0%), 'exercise therapy : ambulation'(7.2%), 'splinting'(5.4%), and 'positioning'(5.1%). In the comparison of numbers between performed nursing activities and nursing activities of NIC according to nursing intervention label, the mean of combined rate was 52.3%. Conclusion: These findings will help in building of a standardized language for orthopedic nursing units and enhance the quality of nursing care.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the attributes, antecedents, and consequences of post-intensive care syndrome. Methods: The study was conducted in accordance with Walker and Avant's conceptual analysis process. We searched the Medline, ProQuest, Google scholar, NANET (Korean National Assembly Library), and RISS (Korean Education and Research Information Service) databases resulting in 29 studies for in-depth review. Results: The attributes of post-intensive care syndrome include (1) new or worsening impairment persisting after discharge, (2) physical impairment, (3) psychological impairment, (4) cognitive impairment, and (5) symptom experience. The antecedents of the concept include a critical condition that requires intensive care, stressful events, immobility, sedation, delirium, insomnia, frailty, and invasive procedures. The consequences of post-intensive care syndrome are increased dependency in activities of daily life, decreased social interaction, delayed return to previous occupation, decreased quality of life, familial post-intensive care syndrome, and readmission/death. Conclusion: The concept of post-intensive care syndrome has multifaceted and integrative features. Further research needs to be conducted to develop a measurement tool that reflects the attributes of the concept and to develop multidisciplinary interventions to prevent post-intensive care syndrome.
Objectives: Investigation of the antidepressant effects of Citri Reticulatae Viride Pericarpium(CR) Methods: In order to investigate the antidepressant effects of Citri Reticulatae Viride Pericarpium(CR), we performed the forced swimming test. Also the expression of CRF, HSP70 and c-fos was measured with immunohistochemical method at PVN. Results: 1. The duration of immobility in the forced swimming test was significantly decreased in the CR 100mg/kg, 400mg/kg groups. 2. In the Control group, CRF expression was significantly increased in the PVN. Also, these CRF increase were significantly reduced in the CR 100mg/kg and 400mg/kg treated group. 3. HSP70 expression was significantly decreased at PVN in the CR 100mg/kg and 400mg/kg treated group. 4. C-fos expression was significantly decreased at PVN in the CR 100mg/kg and 400mg/kg treated group. Conclusions: According to the results, it can be considered that Citri Reticulatae Viride Pericarpium has antidepressant effect.
Objective : This study was designed to assess the protective effects of Chengwhabosimtang on the animal model of depression, chronic mild stress(CMS). Method : Male Sprague-Dawley rats Were used for this experiment. The subjects Were divided into 3 groups (1. CMS-drug: Chengwhabosimtang administered during CMS treatment, 2. CMS-vehicle: water administered, 3. normal ). After 4 weeks of CMS treatment they were executed Forced swimming test(FST) and Elevated plus maze. Tyrosine hydroxylase(TH) in ventral tegmental area(VTA) and c-Fos in paraventricular nucleus(PVN) were measured. Result : 1. In FST, CMS-drug group showed significantly decreased immobility behavior. 2. CMS-drug group showed no significantly lower TH level in VTA than CMS-vehicle group. 3. CMS-drug group showed significantly less c-Fos expressed cell bodies in PVN than CMS-vehicle group. 4. In Elevated plus maze, CMS-drug group showed no significantly anxiety. Conclusion : These results suggest that Chengwhabosimtang may have protective antidepressant effects in CMS model rats. And these effects could be explained by the elevated stress-copying behaviors which are related with PVN of hypothalamus and dopaminergic neurons in VTA.
This paper summarizes the research results on the structural characteristics of the Korean innovation system. The Korean NIS has functioned well in the foreign technology imitation stage. However, there are many drawbacks to advancing to the stage of technological innovation. Weak infrastructure and linkages among technological institutions are detrimental factors that affect technological innovation. The immobility of professional manpower is a serious bottleneck to knowledge diffusion. Especially, the inactivity of university research prevents universities from being able to play a relevant role in the national innovation system. The drawbacks of the Korean innovation system are mainly associated with the public sector and social culture. Weak linkages among organizations are due to the lack of trust among people and organizations, and absence of demand-oriented management in public institutes. Weaknesses in technological infrastructure, university research and the social and cultural environment are tile result of the lack of government will. However, the private sector was evaluated as being relatively active in innovation. Particularly, Chaebols deployed aggressive strategies to acquire their own technological capabilities. The findings of this study suggest that to strengthen the Korean innovation system, the government continues to be important, as in the past, in order to shape social institutions and a culture that is learning friendly, diffusion friendly and, consequently, innovation friendly.

Glycyrrhizae radix (GR) is an herbal medicine commonly used in East Asia for treating a variety of diseases, including stomach disorders. In this study, the antidepressant-like activity of GR was investigated using the forced swimming test (FST) in rats. After the FST, the expression of c-Fos and corticotrophin releasing factor (CRF) was assessed by immunochemistry of brain samples from the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVN). The results of the FST showed that a high dose (400 mg/kg) of extract was very effective in reducing immobility(P<0.01), and increased climbing. In addition, treatment with GR (400 mg/kg) significantly decreased the expression of c-Fos and CRF in the PVN, compared to controls. In conclusion, the findings of this study demonstrated that GR effectively reduced behavioral and physiological depression responses in an animal model of depression, suggesting that GR might be useful in the treatment of clinical depression.
