  • Yongdoseo and Guimunwon are described in "Bokgeo(卜居, fixabode)" of "Sanlimkyengje(山林經濟)" written by Manseon Hong. This record is a unique garden conceptual idea applying the principles of Hetu(河圖) and Luoshu(洛書), fanciful gardens which have not been actually constructed. Here, two garden types were concretely described respectively, however the underlying meaning therein cannot be apprehended without exact understanding about Sangsu studies. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to illuminate the meaning contained in Garden illustration and the historical meaning of landscape therein through considering this text. To achieve the purpose of this study, the writer and the compiler who are the background of this writing and the outline of Sangsu studies were investigated. Also, the principles of Saengsu(生數), Seongsu(成數), Yin Yang(陰陽), Four Bodies(四象), Palgwedo(八卦圖), etc. which are in Hetu and Luoshu were considered. The result of this study went through this research process is summarized as follows. First, Hetu Luoshu are conceptual definitions which wholly abstracted the basic propositions of Sangsu philosophy such as the universe change principle, etc., while Yongdoseo and Guimunwon can be said to be operational definitions which apply those as garden composition principle, enabling to experience the meaning contained therein concretely and explain it in a replicable way. This attempt is a unique example, unprecedented in Chinaas well. Second, as a livingspace, garden was selected as a means to concretize operational definitions about the meaning of Hetu Luoshu, and as the property to reproduce the bearings concept, the location and the number, etc. of Hetu Luoshu, Taegukjeong(太極亭), Shipjagak(十字閣), Dondae(墩臺), well, pond as well as various kinds of trees were used. Third, the main motif of Yongdoseo and Guimunwon is the relation between Apriority(先天) and Posterior(後天), and the relation between Constitution(體) and Use(用) of Hetu and Luoshu respectively. That is, Yongdoseo planted evergreen trees such as Shipjangcheong(十長靑) in order to symbolize the universe creation principle which Hetu stands for, i.e. silent, harmonious, orderly and win-win image. In Guimunwon, flowering trees(花木) and fruit trees(果木) were planted freely to express the change of Posterior which Luoshu stands for, thatis, dynamic, disharmonious, disorderly, incompatible(相剋) and changing image. The effects intended to be attained through such planting were, 'freshness and cheerfulness(淸爽)' of Yongdoseo and 'splendidness' of Guimunwon respectively. Sangsu studies based on Hetu and Luoshu is a unique thinking system to the Orient which came from the accumulated wisdom of several scholars from various schools through a long period since ancient times. Therefore, the concept and the theory thereof are profound and huge, and its viewpoints of interpretation are diverse. It is a limit of this study that more in-depth and various consideration was not performed. As a further research project, more empirical study of Orientalism such as Sangsu studies, etc. inherent in Traditional Garden is necessary.

  • Recently, the MPEG-7 standard a multimedia content description standard is wide]y used for content based image/video retrieval systems. However, since the descriptors standardized in MPEG-7 are usually multidimensional and the problem called 'Curse of dimensionality', previously proposed indexing methods(for example, multidimensional indexing methods, dimensionality reduction methods, filtering methods, and so on) could not be used to effectively index the multimedia database represented in MPEG-7. This paper proposes an efficient multimedia data indexing mechanism reflecting the characteristics of MPEG-7 visual descriptors. In the proposed indexing mechanism, the descriptor is transformed into a histogram of some attributes. By representing the value of each bin as a binary number, the histogram itself that is a visual descriptor for the object in multimedia database could be represented as a bit string. Bit strings for all objects in multimedia database are collected to form an index file, bitmap index, in the proposed indexing mechanism. By XORing them with the descriptors for query object, the candidate solutions for similarity search could be computed easily and they are checked again with query object to precisely compute the similarity with exact metric such as Ll-norm. These indexing and searching mechanisms are efficient because the filtering process is performed by simple bit-operation and it reduces the search space dramatically. Upon experimental results with more than 100,000 real images, the proposed indexing and searching mechanisms are about IS times faster than the sequential searching with more than 90% accuracy.

  • Virtual colonoscopy is an easy and fast method to reconstruct the shape of colon and diagnose tumors inside the colon based on computed tomography images. This is a non-invasive method, which resolves weak points of previous invasive methods. The path for virtual colonoscopy should be generated rapidly and accurately for clinical examination. However, previous methods are computationally expensive because the data structure such as distance map should be constructed in the preprocessing and positions of all the points of the path needs to be calculated. In this paper, we propose the automatic path generation method based on visibility to decrease path generation time. The proposed method does not require preprocessing and generates small number of control points representing the Path instead of all points to generate the path rapidly. Also, our method generates the path based on visibility so that a virtual camera moves smoothly and a comfortable and accurate path is calculated for virtual navigation. Also, our method can be used for general virtual navigation of various kinds of pipes.

  • It is well known to us that in its enlarged sense Deleuze's philosophy has confrontation with platonism that has dominated the whole western ideas, and in a narrow sense it is confrontation with representative thinking and representative arts. In other words, it's obvious what Deleuze has considered the most important in his whole of ideas is to think not in a representative way but in a non-representational way and to disentangle thinking from its representative image. To examine the way how Deleuze criticize representation, and how he overcome modern ideas is not just to make a clean breast of platonic inheritance. Because they are essential for facing up to the actual circumstances of our contemporaries who have degraded servility of totalitarian thoughts under the thinking of identity, and furthermore, it is essential for overcoming this situation and proceeding to nomadic thinking, liberating thinking. This study is not intended to be a definitive account of all his criticism of representation. Because, as is well known, Deleuze's criticism of representation contains a wide variety. And so this study were limited a relatively small number of points in Deleuze's position on representation as follows. How does Deleuze's criticism of representation has been developed in his theory of paintings? And what does it mean to us today? In this paper, I paid special regard to make sense out Deleuze's concept of 'figure' in his important writings that pertains to an analysis of his criticism of representation, Francis Bacon: The Logic of Sensation. And having traced the development process of the concept of 'figure', I want to understand the implicit meaning of the concept in constant flux of his critical thinking.

  • A new approach to reduce the computation time of genetic algorithm (GA) for making binary phase holograms is described. Synthesized holograms having diffraction efficiency of 75.8% and uniformity of 5.8% are proven in computer simulation and experimentally demonstrated. Recently, computer-generated holograms (CGHs) having high diffraction efficiency and flexibility of design have been widely developed in many applications such as optical information processing, optical computing, optical interconnection, etc. Among proposed optimization methods, GA has become popular due to its capability of reaching nearly global. However, there exits a drawback to consider when we use the genetic algorithm. It is the large amount of computation time to construct desired holograms. One of the major reasons that the GA' s operation may be time intensive results from the expense of computing the cost function that must Fourier transform the parameters encoded on the hologram into the fitness value. In trying to remedy this drawback, Artificial Neural Network (ANN) has been put forward, allowing CGHs to be created easily and quickly (1), but the quality of reconstructed images is not high enough to use in applications of high preciseness. For that, we are in attempt to find a new approach of combiningthe good properties and performance of both the GA and ANN to make CGHs of high diffraction efficiency in a short time. The optimization of CGH using the genetic algorithm is merely a process of iteration, including selection, crossover, and mutation operators [2]. It is worth noting that the evaluation of the cost function with the aim of selecting better holograms plays an important role in the implementation of the GA. However, this evaluation process wastes much time for Fourier transforming the encoded parameters on the hologram into the value to be solved. Depending on the speed of computer, this process can even last up to ten minutes. It will be more effective if instead of merely generating random holograms in the initial process, a set of approximately desired holograms is employed. By doing so, the initial population will contain less trial holograms equivalent to the reduction of the computation time of GA's. Accordingly, a hybrid algorithm that utilizes a trained neural network to initiate the GA's procedure is proposed. Consequently, the initial population contains less random holograms and is compensated by approximately desired holograms. Figure 1 is the flowchart of the hybrid algorithm in comparison with the classical GA. The procedure of synthesizing a hologram on computer is divided into two steps. First the simulation of holograms based on ANN method [1] to acquire approximately desired holograms is carried. With a teaching data set of 9 characters obtained from the classical GA, the number of layer is 3, the number of hidden node is 100, learning rate is 0.3, and momentum is 0.5, the artificial neural network trained enables us to attain the approximately desired holograms, which are fairly good agreement with what we suggested in the theory. The second step, effect of several parameters on the operation of the hybrid algorithm is investigated. In principle, the operation of the hybrid algorithm and GA are the same except the modification of the initial step. Hence, the verified results in Ref [2] of the parameters such as the probability of crossover and mutation, the tournament size, and the crossover block size are remained unchanged, beside of the reduced population size. The reconstructed image of 76.4% diffraction efficiency and 5.4% uniformity is achieved when the population size is 30, the iteration number is 2000, the probability of crossover is 0.75, and the probability of mutation is 0.001. A comparison between the hybrid algorithm and GA in term of diffraction efficiency and computation time is also evaluated as shown in Fig. 2. With a 66.7% reduction in computation time and a 2% increase in diffraction efficiency compared to the GA method, the hybrid algorithm demonstrates its efficient performance. In the optical experiment, the phase holograms were displayed on a programmable phase modulator (model XGA). Figures 3 are pictures of diffracted patterns of the letter "0" from the holograms generated using the hybrid algorithm. Diffraction efficiency of 75.8% and uniformity of 5.8% are measured. We see that the simulation and experiment results are fairly good agreement with each other. In this paper, Genetic Algorithm and Neural Network have been successfully combined in designing CGHs. This method gives a significant reduction in computation time compared to the GA method while still allowing holograms of high diffraction efficiency and uniformity to be achieved. • View of Lee Je-ma's "Hyung Sang" is one of the methods of classification of Constitution. In this study, I studied the "Hyung Sang" as medical histologically, and get the results as follow; 1. "The book of changes" is classified to the sciences of divination of "Sang-Soo", which is consisted with "Sang (image)" and "Soo (number)", and "Wae-Ri", which explained the meaning of a divination sign as "nature" or virtue of divination sign. 2. Lee Je-ma is accepted the concepts of science of divination of "Wae-Ri" based on Confucianism in the discription of "The book of changes". And also he established the new "Sasang Constitutional Medicine" theory based on the "Joung-Young". 3. "The book of changes" is discribed phenomena as "Sang" and "Soo" involving "Three elements", which are heaven, earth, and individual, and "Yin-Yang". Lee Je-ma accepted the concept of "Sang" in science of divination of "Sang-Soo" and established the "Four elements", which are affairs, mind, body, and objects, constituting "Three elements". 4. In the method of "Sasang" type classifying, Lee Je-ma used "Four elements", which attach importance to structure and function of human body rather than "Yin-Yang", which explain relatively.

  • Zhōuyì周易 is intended to explain the affairs of human beings by observing the images and works of all things in the universe, abstracting them into the $b{\bar{a}}gu{\grave{a}}$八卦, calculating the process and inducing the outcome by the method of stalk divination, in which this paper finds the origin of natural scientific thought of Zhōuyì. The way of Zhōuyì's thought on the natural science is distinguished from that of the Western's. In the West, people dismantled the objects into the parts until they reached the atom and analyzed them by the principle of causality to draw an axiomatic truth. In the meantime Zhōuyì observed and studied the dynamic functions and changes of all things for the convergence of the whole. While the way of Zhōuyì's thinking could have not contributed to the development of modern scientific development, that of the West overwhelmed Asian development passing through the period of enlightenment during 16-17 century. This paper tries to articulate the points where Zhōuyì can share its theory with the contemporary science by finding the traces of scientific thoughts in Zhōuyì. It encounters its ground from the methodology of natural science and scientific statements proposed by Zhōuyì. The essential concepts of Zhōuyì are induced from all things in nature. This can be considered as the idea of '法自然'(emulating the patterns and examples from nature). Also they observed the images and changes seen by the habits of animals, plants and human beings to sense and perceive their laws. These are regarded as the methodology of natural science in Zhōuyì. As a book of divination, the way of stalk divination is designed to calculate the future by using the system of 'numbers'. 'tàijí太極', ' yīnyáng陰陽', 'four symbols四象', '$b{\bar{a}}gu{\grave{a}}$八卦' and 'wǔxíng五行' are the essential concepts of Zhōuyì to represents the dynamic phenomena and changes of the natural order. Among them '$b{\bar{a}}gu{\grave{a}}$八卦' is a presentment to explain the structure of the world not by the individual analysis of things but by the unification of the whole through the contradictions and interchanges among them to reach the new orders. As of now, the studies of Zhōuyì in Korea have focused on the traditional perspectives, such as political and ethical philosophy. Some of recent studies, having interpreted Zhōuyì with scientific inclination have generated controversy 'Can Zhōuyì be a science?', for which scholars have hard time to reach the agreement. This paper tries to find the headwaters of the contemporary natural science by elaborating the methodology of natural science stated in Zhōuyì.
