Block Adaptive Binarization of Business Card Images Acquired in PDA Using a Modified Quadratic filter (변형된 Quadratic 필터를 이용한 PDA로 획득한 명함 영상의 블록 적응 이진화)

  • In this paper, we propose a block adaptive binarization (BAB) using a modified quadratic filter (MQF) to binarize business card images acquired by personal digital assistant (PDA) cameras effectively. In the proposed method, a business card image is first partitioned into blocks of 8${\times}$8 and the blocks are then classified into character Hocks (CBs) and background blocks (BBs). Each classified CB is windowed with a 24${\times}$24 rectangular window centering around the CB and the windowed blocks are improved by the pre-processing filter MQF, in which the scheme of threshold selection in QF is modified. The 8${\times}$8 center block of the improved block is barbarized with the threshold selected in the MQF. A binary image is obtained tiling each binarized block in its original position. Experimental results show that the MQF and the BAB have much better effects on the performance of binarization compared to the QF and the global binarization (GB), respectively, for the test business card images acquired in a PDA. Also the proposed BAB using MQF gives binary images of much better quality, in which the characters appear much better clearly, over the conventional GB using QF. In addition, the binary images by the proposed BAB using MQF yields about 87.7% of character recognition rate so that about 32.0% performance improvement over those by the GB using QF yielding about 55.7% of character recognition rate using a commercial character recognition software.

State-of-the-art 3D GIS: System Development Perspectives

  • Since the mid-1990′s, researches on 3D GIS have been regarded as one of main issues both in the academic sites and commercial vendors; recently, some prototyped systems or the first versioned software systems of commercial basis are being reported and released. Unlike conventional 2D GIS, which consists in intelligent structured GIS or desktop GIS, every 3D GIS has its own distinguished features according to data structure-supporting capability, GIS-styled functionality, external database accessibility, interfacing extents with 2D GIS, 3D visualization/texture mapping ability, and so forth. In this study, technical aspects related to system development, SERI-Web3D GIS ver. 1.2, are explained. Main features in this revised 3D GIS can be summarized: 2-tier system model(client-server), VGFF(Virtual GIS File Format), internal GIS import, Feature manager(zoning, layering, visualization evironment), Scene manager(manage 3D geographic world), Scene editor, Spatial analyzer(Intersect, Buffering, Network analysis), VRML exporter. While, most other 3D GISes or cartographic mapping systems may be categorized into 3D visualization systems handling terrain height-field processing, 2D GIS extension modules, or 3D geometric feature generation system using orthophoto image: actually, these are eventually considered as several parts of "real 3D GIS". As well as these things, other components, especially web-based 3D GIS, are being implemented in this study: Surface/feature integration, Java/VRML linkage, Mesh/Grid problem, LOD(Level of Detail)/Tiling, Public access security problem, 3-tier architecture extension, Surface handling strategy for VRML.

A Study on Pointillistic Rendering Based on User Defined Palette (사용자 정의 팔레트에 기반한 점묘화 렌더링에 관한 연구)

  • The French neo-impressionist painter, George Seurat, introduced pointillism under the theory that the individual pigments of colors on the canvas are reconstructed on the human retina. Pointillism is a painting technique in which many small brush strokes are combined to form a picture in the canvas. When such a painting is seen from a far, the individual stroke color are unnoticeable and they are seen as intermixed colors. This is called juxtaposed color mixture. In this paper, we present a painterly rendering method for generating the pointillism images. For expressing countless separate dots which shown in the pointillism works, we propose a hierarchical points structure using Wang The method. Also a user defined palette is constructed based on the usage that Neo-Impressionist painter works on his palette. Lastly, based on this, a probability algorithm will be introduced, which divides the colors in the image(sampled by hierarchical point structure) into juxtaposed colors. A hierarchical points set which undergone juxtaposed color division algorithm is converted into brush strokes.

  • In the past, mosaics were made by laying cloth on the floor and manually tiling the tiles. However, due to recent developments in technology, the data storage method has evolved from analog to digital, so that image representation and conversion can be realized through computer. Also, various expression techniques of mosaic are developed, and it is also used as a method of art representation in digital. There are various studies on the production process of mosaic. The proposed method is a crystallization mosaic that spreads spirally in real time and uses 3D quartz as a tile element. Although existing researches are mostly focused on the purpose of rendering images in more detail, this technique combines untried spiral drawing and crystallization, and attempts to explore new expression techniques in 3D space by attempting a new mosaic method in 3D space. 'Spiral Crystallization Photo', based on this technique, was selected as Top27 in MWU Award 18 and exhibited at Unite Seoul 2018.

Rhabdomere Formation in Late Pupal Stage of Drosophila melanogaster; Observation Using High-Pressure Freezing and Freeze-Substitution, and High-Voltage Electron Microscopy (초고압 동결장비와 초고압투과전자현미경을 이용한 초파리의 감간분체 형성과정의 구조분석)

  • The late pupal stage of Drosophila melanogaster occurs immediately before the completion of retinal development, during which the rhabdomere rapidly forms. In this period, the photoreceptor cells were fixed and dehydrated using a high-pressure freezer (HPF) and freeze substitution (FS) technique, which is the most effective in preserving the cell structures, and observed using high-voltage electron microscopy (HVEM) at 1000 KV. The rhabdomere was classified structurally into three types of formation patterns using stereo-tiling image of thick sections. Initially, hexagonal arrays of rhabdomere existed in different angles. In addition, small pieces of rhabdomere could be observed in the cytoplasm of the photoreceptor rolls, which were visible during the profess of rhabdomere formation. In addition, multiple layers of rhabdomere strings were observed. We observed there are at least three types of vesicles related to rhabdomere formation in photoreceptor cells. In addition, it was found that these vesicles initiate the formation of the rhabdomeres during the pupal stage. Collectively, these data suggest that rhabdomeres were mainly formed through vesicles, and that parts of the rhabdomere formed first and then gathered and formed rhabdomeres in the late pupal stage.

A Comparative Study about Industrial Structure Feature between TL Carriers and LTL Carriers (구역화물운송업과 노선화물운송업의 산업구조 특성 비교)

  • Transportation enterprises should maintain constant and qualitative operation. Thus, in short period, transportation enterprises don't change supply in accordance with demand. In the result, transportation enterprises don't reduce operation in spite of management deficit at will. In freight transportation type, less-than-truckload(LTL) has more relation with above transportation feature than truckload(TL) does. Because freight transportation supply of TL is more flexible than that of LTL in correspondence of freight transportation demand. Relating to above mention, it appears that shortage of road and freight terminal of LTL is larger than that of TL. Especially in road and freight terminal comparison, shortage of freight terminal is larger than that of road. Shortage of road is the largest in 1990, and improved after-ward. But shortage of freight terminal is serious lately. So freight terminal needs more expansion than road, and shows better investment condition than road. Freight terminal expansion brings road expansion in LTL, on the contrary, freight terminal expansion substitutes freight terminal for road in TL. In transportation revenue, freight terminal's contribution to LTL is larger than that to TL. However, when we adjust quasi-fixed factor - road and freight terminal - to optimal level in the long run, in TL, diseconomies of scale becomes large, but in LTL, economies of scale becomes large. Consequently, it is necessary for TL to make counterplans to activate management of small size enterprises and owner drivers. And LTL should make use of economies of scale by solving the problem, such as nonprofit route, excess of rental freight handling of office, insufficiency of freight terminal, shortage of driver, and unpreparedness of freight insurance.
