This paper proposes the Hough transform(HT) using an extended lookup table(LUT) to reduce the computational burden of the HT that is a typical straight line detection algorithm, and analyzes its performance. The conventional HT also uses a LUT to the calculation of the parameter 𝜌 of all straight lines passing through an edge pixel of interest(ePel) in order to reduce the computational burden. However, the proposed HT adopts an extended LUT that can be applied to straight lines across the ePel as well as its peripheral edge pixels to induce more computational reduction. This paper proves the validity of the proposed algorithm mathematically and also verifies it through simulation. The simulation results show that the proposed HT reduces the multiplication computation from 49.6% up to 16.1%, depending on the image and the applied extended LUT, compared to the conventional HT.

Computer vision-based damage detection enables non-contact, efficient and low-cost bridge health monitoring, which reduces the need for labor-intensive manual inspection or that for a large number of on-site sensing instruments. By leveraging recent semantic segmentation approaches, we can detect regions of critical structural components and identify damages at pixel level on images. However, existing methods perform poorly when detecting small and thin damages (e.g., cracks); the problem is exacerbated by imbalanced samples. To this end, we incorporate domain knowledge to introduce a hierarchical semantic segmentation framework that imposes a hierarchical semantic relationship between component categories and damage types. For instance, certain types of concrete cracks are only present on bridge columns, and therefore the noncolumn region may be masked out when detecting such damages. In this way, the damage detection model focuses on extracting features from relevant structural components and avoid those from irrelevant regions. We also utilize multi-scale augmentation to preserve contextual information of each image, without losing the ability to handle small and/or thin damages. In addition, our framework employs an importance sampling, where images with rare components are sampled more often, to address sample imbalance. We evaluated our framework on a public synthetic dataset that consists of 2,000 railway bridges. Our framework achieves a 0.836 mean intersection over union (IoU) for structural component segmentation and a 0.483 mean IoU for damage segmentation. Our results have in total 5% and 18% improvements for the structural component segmentation and damage segmentation tasks, respectively, compared to the best-performing baseline model.
Laboratory-scale hydraulic fracturing experiments were conducted on granite specimens at various viscosities and injection rates of the fracturing fluid. A series of cross-sectional computed tomography (CT) images of fractured specimens was obtained via a three-dimensional X-ray CT imaging method. Pixel-level fracture segmentation of the CT images was conducted using a convolutional neural network (CNN)-based Nested U-Net model structure. Compared with traditional image processing methods, the CNN-based model showed a better performance in the extraction of thin and complex fractures. These extracted fractures extracted were reconstructed in three dimensions and morphologically analyzed based on their fracture volume, aperture, tortuosity, and surface roughness. The fracture volume and aperture increased with the increase in viscosity of the fracturing fluid, while the tortuosity and roughness of the fracture surface decreased. The findings also confirmed the anisotropic tortuosity and roughness of the fracture surface. In this study, a CNN-based model was used to perform accurate fracture segmentation, and quantitative analysis of hydraulic stimulated fractures was conducted successfully.

Scene change detection is pretreatment to index and search video information in video search system, and it is very important technology for overall performance. Existing scene change detection used single characteristic of pixel value difference, histogram difference, etc or mixed single characteristics that have complementary relationship. However, accuracy of those researches is very poor for special video such as infrared camera, night shooting. Therefore, this paper is proposed the method that is mixed color histogram and at algorithm for scene change detection at the specific movie. To verify the usefulness of a proposed method, we did an experiment which used color histogram only and KLT algorithm with color histogram. In result, evaluation index of proposed method is improved about 11.4% at the specific movie.
Lung cancer segmentation in chest CT images is challenging due to the varying sizes of tumors and the presence of surrounding structures with similar intensity values. To address these issues, we propose a lung cancer segmentation network that incorporates deep supervision and utilizes UNet3+ as the backbone. Additionally, we propose a hybrid lesion focal loss function comprising three components: pixel-based, region-based, and shape-based, which allows us to focus on the smaller tumor regions relative to the background and consider shape information for handling ambiguous boundaries. We validate our proposed method through comparative experiments with UNet and UNet3+ and demonstrate that our proposed method achieves superior performance in terms of Dice Similarity Coefficient (DSC) for tumors of all sizes.
Purpose: Cross-modality coregistration of positron emission tomography (PET) and magnetic resonance imaging (MR) could enhance the clinical information. In this study we propose a refined technique to improve the robustness of registration, and to implement more realistic visualization of the coregistered images. Materials and Methods: Using the sinogram of PET emission scan, we extracted the robust head boundary and used boundary-enhanced PET to coregister PET with MR. The pixels having 10% of maximum pixel value were considered as the boundary of sinogram. Boundary pixel values were exchanged with maximum value of sinogram. One hundred eighty boundary points were extracted at intervals of about 2 degree using simple threshold method from each slice of MR images. Best affined transformation between the two point sets was performed using least square fitting which should minimize the sum of Euclidean distance between the point sets. We reduced calculation time using pre-defined distance map. Finally we developed an automatic coregistration program using this boundary detection and surface matching technique. We designed a new weighted normalization technique to display the coregistered PET and MR images simultaneously. Results: Using our newly developed method, robust extraction of head boundary was possible and spatial registration was successfully performed. Mean displacement error was less than 2.0 mm. In visualization of coregistered images using weighted normalization method, structures shown in MR image could be realistically represented. Conclusion: Our refined technique could practically enhance the performance of automated three dimensional coregistration.

In this paper, a method to directly calculate the major elements of skin color such as melanin and hemoglobin from the RGB signal of the camera is proposed. The main elements of skin color typically measure spectral reflectance using specific equipment, and reconfigure the values at some wavelengths of the measured light. The values calculated by this method include such things as melanin index and erythema index, and require special equipment such as a spectral reflectance measuring device or a multi-spectral camera. It is difficult to find a direct calculation method for such component elements from a general digital camera, and a method of indirectly calculating the concentration of melanin and hemoglobin using independent component analysis has been proposed. This method targets a region of a certain RGB image, extracts characteristic vectors of melanin and hemoglobin, and calculates the concentration in a manner similar to that of Principal Component Analysis. The disadvantage of this method is that it is difficult to directly calculate the pixel unit because a group of pixels in a certain area is used as an input, and since the extracted feature vector is implemented by an optimization method, it tends to be calculated with a different value each time it is executed. The final calculation is determined in the form of an image representing the components of melanin and hemoglobin by converting it back to the RGB coordinate system without using the feature vector itself. In order to improve the disadvantages of this method, the proposed method is to calculate the component values of melanin and hemoglobin in a feature space rather than an RGB coordinate system using a feature vector, and calculate the spectral reflectance corresponding to the skin color using a general digital camera. Methods and methods of calculating detailed components constituting skin pigments such as melanin, oxidized hemoglobin, deoxidized hemoglobin, and carotenoid using spectral reflectance. The proposed method does not require special equipment such as a spectral reflectance measuring device or a multi-spectral camera, and unlike the existing method, direct calculation of the pixel unit is possible, and the same characteristics can be obtained even in repeated execution. The standard diviation of density for melanin and hemoglobin of proposed method was 15% compared to conventional and therefore gives 6 times stable.

This paper presents a video quality assessment method based on quality degradation factors of real-time multimedia streaming services. The video quality degradation is caused by video source compression and network states. In this paper, we propose a blocky metric on an image domain to measure quality degradation by video compression. In this paper, the proposed boundary strength index for the blocky metric is defined by ratio of the variation of two pixel values adjacent to $8{\times}8$ block boundary and the average variation at several pixels adjacent to the two boundary pixels. On the other hand, unnatural image movement caused by network performance deterioration such as jitter and delay factors can be observed. In this paper, a temporal-Jerkiness measurement method is proposed by computing statistics of luminance differences between consecutive frames and play-time intervals between frames. The proposed final Perceptual Video Quality Metric (PVQM) is proposed by consolidating both blocking strength and temporal-jerkiness. To evaluate performance of the proposed algorithm, the accuracy of the proposed algorithm is compared with Difference of Mean Opinion Score (DMOS) based on human visual system.

Smear is a phenomenon that occurs when an extremely strong light source appears in the imaging system with CCD sensor. It occurs due to the signal charge transfer of CCD and appears as bright lines of noise emanating vertically (or horizontally) from the light source. For still images, smear can be reduced by using a mechanical shutter or special drive methods, but these techniques cannot be applied to image sequences. In this paper, we propose a smear removal method that can be applied to imaging systems for not only still images but also image sequences. The proposed method uses the optical black region(OBR) which is a group of pixels located in the boundary of CCD imaging sensors. Although the OBR is not exposed to light, it contains smear information caused by the charge transport. First, noise and the smear signal in the OBR is separated, and noise is removed to correctly estimate smear effect. Then, corrected OBR signal is uniformly subtracted to eliminate smear effect. Also, if saturation is occurred, the current pixel is substituted by weighted summation of neighboring pixels to improve the visual degradation. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the conventional methods.
Old archived film shows two major defects: line scratch and blobs. In this paper, we present a design and implementation of an automatic video restoration system for line scratches observed in archived film. We use autoregressive (AR) image model because we can make stochastic and specifically autoregressive image generation process with our PAST-PRESENT model and Sampling Pattern. We designed locality maximizing scanning pattern, which can generate nearly stationary time-like series of pixels, which is a strong requirement for a stochastic series to be autoregressive. The sampled pixel series undergoes filtering and model fitting using Durbin-Levinson algorithm before interpolation process. We designed three-stage film restoration system, which includes (1) film acquisition from VHS tapes, (2) simple line scratch detection and restoration, and (3) manual blob identification and sophisticated inpainting scheme. We implemented film acquisition and simple inpainting scheme on Texas Instruments DSP board TMS320DM642 EVM, and implemented our AR inpainting scheme on PC for sophisticated restoration. We experimented our scheme with two old Korean films: "Viva Freedom" and "Robot Tae-Kwon-V", and the experimental results show that our scheme improves Bertalmio's scheme for subjective quality (MOS), objective quality (PSNR), and especially restoration ratio (RR), which reflects how much similar to the manual inpainting results.
