Fingerprint segmentation and ridge orientation estimation algorithms with images from a mobile camera are proposed. The fingerprint images from a mobile camera are quite different from those from conventional sensor, called touch based sensor such as optical, capacitive, and thermal. For example, the images from a mobile camera are colored and the backgrounds or non-finger regions are very erratic depending on how the image capture time and place. Also the contrast between ridge and valley of a mobile camera image are lower than that of touch based sensor image. To segment fingerprint region, we first detect the initial region using color information and texture information. The LUT (Look Up Table) is used to model the color distribution of fingerprint images using manually segmented images and frequency information is extracted to discriminate between in focused fingerprint regions and out of focused background regions. With the detected initial region, the region growing algerian is executed to segment final fingerprint region. In fingerprint orientation estimation, the problem of gradient based method is very sensitive to outlier that occurred by scar and camera noise. To solve this problem, we propose a robust regression method that removes the outlier iteratively and effectively. In the experiments, we evaluated the result of the proposed fingerprint segmentation algerian using 600 manually segmented images and compared the orientation algorithms in terms of recognition accuracy.

Negative space in the discipline of art defines the space around and between the subject of an image. The use of negative space is an element of artistic composition, since it is occasionally used to artistic effect as the "real" subject of an image. In painting, it is a technique that negatively touches the background of an object to be expressed, so that it gives a feeling of unique texture and silhouette by touching unnecessary parts while leaving necessary parts. As in art, negative space in a design can also be useful to identify an image of infeasible design ranges with a straightforward view. Similarity between two disciplines leads to the introduction of the negative space concept for design space exploration. A rough design space exploration using statistics and visual analytics may support more efficient decision-making, and can provide meaningful insights into the direction of early-phase system design. For this, the approach guarantees dynamic interactions between visualized information and human cognitive systems. Visual analytics is useful to summarize complex and large-scale data. It is useful for identifying feasible design spaces, as well as for avoiding infeasible spaces or highly risky spaces. This paper investigates the possible use of the negative space concept by using an application example.
AAM(Active Appearance Model) is an algorithm to extract face feature points with statistical models of shape and texture information based on PCA(Principal Component Analysis). This method is widely used for face recognition, face modeling and expression recognition. However, the detection performance of AAM algorithm is sensitive to initial value and the AAM method has the problem that detection error is increased when an input image is quite different from training data. Especially, the algorithm shows high accuracy in case of closed lips but the detection error is increased in case of opened lips and deformed lips according to the facial expression of user. To solve these problems, we propose the improved AAM algorithm using lip feature points which is extracted based on a new lip detection algorithm. In this paper, we select a searching region based on the face feature points which are detected by AAM algorithm. And lip corner points are extracted by using Canny edge detection and histogram projection method in the selected searching region. Then, lip region is accurately detected by combining color and edge information of lip in the searching region which is adjusted based on the position of the detected lip corners. Based on that, the accuracy and processing speed of lip detection are improved. Experimental results showed that the RMS(Root Mean Square) error of the proposed method was reduced as much as 4.21 pixels compared to that only using AAM algorithm.
The purposes of this study were to investigate the emotional consumption propensity and the preferences for sensibility factors of fabrics(color tone, pattern and texture image), and to analyse the differences according to demographic variables and relationships between emotional consumption propensity and preferences for sensibility factors of fabrics, focusing on male and female consumers in 20's, 30's and 40's. The emotional consumption propensity were classified into symbolic consumption propensity, individual consumption propensity, aesthetic consumption propensity and hedonic consumption propensity. The subjects attached great importance in the order of aesthetic consumption propensity, individual consumption propensity and symbolic consumption propensity. Those factors of emotional consumption propensity showed partially significant difference according to demographic variables. Female consumers preferred various color tones than men did, and preference for light color tone showed significant differences according to gender and occupation of consumers. The preferences for floral pattern showed significant difference according to gender, age, education, occupation and marital status of consumers. The factors of the texture images for the fabrics showed partially significant difference according to demographic variables except education of consumers. There were almost significant relationships between emotional consumption propensity and the preferences for sensibility factors for fabrics.
In this study, the limitations of the existing water level detection algorithm using CCTV images were recognized and the water level detection algorithm was improved by applying the Region growing technique. It applied three techniques (Horizontal projection profile, Texture analysis, and Optical flow) to estimate the water area, and the results were analyzed in a comprehensive analysis to select the initial water area. The water level was then continuously detected by the Region growing technique, referring to the initial water area. As a result, it was possible to confirm that the exact level of water was detected without being affected by environmental factors compared to the existing level detection algorithm, which had frequent mis-detection phenomena depending on the surrounding environmental factors. In addition, the water level was detected in the video showing flooded roads in urban areas, not in the video of the river. These results are believed to be able to supplement the difficulty of monitoring at all times with limited manpower by automatically detecting the level of water through numerous CCTV footage installed throughout the country, and to contribute to laying the foundation for preventing disasters caused by torrential rains and typhoons in advance.

This study attempted to investigate the plasticity of Korean paper expressed in contemporary fashion after general inquiry into Korean paper and examine the aesthetic beauty of fashion design using Korean paper. It used the literature review and empirical data analysis together. Korea-paper fashion design, the object of actual investigation, was for Korean-paper fashion from the 1990s to the present. As a result of analysis, the following findings were obtained: First, the natural, warm and soft texture seen as pureness in Korean paper enables us to elicit naturalness from liberalness. In addition, Korean paper not only has the tough characteristic of its material but also has the natural characteristic of abandoning its original nature and complying and adhering to its a given nature. Korean-paper fashion design, using this natural beauty and frank nature, bears the pure image of excluding decoration. Second, the overlapping of the surface on the surface expressed in Korean-paper fashion design forms one space with the sense of depth because of its transparency and expresses temporality through repetition. And the work of folding it with other materials and pasting them up with together demonstrates the effect of reflection because its original transparency. This effect is the specificity created in the collage technique using Korean paper and is the advantage of coming to obtain a wider freedom of expression. Korean-paper fashion design expresses transparency using this repetition and overlapping, Third, Korean paper has the simple rather than luxurious aspect. Owing to this nature, fashion design looks as if there were the greed inherent behind the work made from Korean paper though the complex technique applied to it. And it expresses the restraint of Korean paper using its original white color, the exclusion of decoration and simple design. Fourth, Korean paper is more likely to be changed by the outside influence because of formation. It has its peculiar aesthetic value and original artistry to an extent that it is regarded as one artistic work. The quality and texture of Korean paper diversely vary according to the artist's working process. Like this, Korean paper is easily fused into some object without exclusivity though it may be added to it. Korean-paper fashion design has the beauty of creation that is to create a new world because Korean paper is fused into another material due to its soft nature.

The feasibility of counting number of small vessels and position in Korean waters using the panchromatic imageries derived from the IRS-1C was tested. The parameters for interpretation of satellite's imageries of small vessels were location(position), size, shape, shadow, tone, texture and pattern, height and depth, situation and association with other vessels. The position of small vessels in the sea without GCP(ground control point) was considered to be inclusive in the satellite imagery with 35 km semi-diameter, denoting rough geographical position of the vessel. The size of vessel was measured by length from stem to stern of the vessel, distinguished by following wave on the surface water. Offshore fishing vessels were separated from merchant ships by their length smaller than 100 m. The shape of vessels on panchromatic imagery of IRS-1C appeared just streamline. In case of clouds which were similar to the shape of small vessels, we were able to distinguish between vessel and cloud by shadow of cloud in the water surface. The tone of sea surface was dark black while small vessel appeared bright white. Small vessel was distinguished from the rough texture of the sea surface and the regular pattern of the waves with white capes when weather was not so good. The situation of the fishing activity was estimated by information of fishing method related to the fishing boat such as the pair trawl in the Yellow Sea.

Until now, the extraction of information on geographic features and the compilation of maps from satellite imagery has had many limitations because of its lower resolution compared to aerial photos to the recent. However, it is expected that the availability of high resolution satellite imagery whose spatial resolution is about 1m will reduce such limitations. Currently, a compilation of national-wide digital base maps is going on to construct the National Geographic Information Systems in Korea. It will be used for many application field of the social welfare. Therefore, in this study, we suggest that satellite imagery can help it and we have experimented on the possibility of detecting and interpreting geographic data using satellite imagery of various spatial resolutions. The interpretability and detectability of 46 features in 6 categories was experimented with 6 kinds of images of different resolutions. As a subsequent procedure, we have performed the fractal analysis for a quality test of the texture information. Through the fractal analysis, we could show that texture information and probability of discrimination increases as the spatial resolution of the image increases. Based on the results of this experiment, we could suggest the possibility of the renewal and construction of the National-wide Geographic Information Systems database using satellite imagery, as well as of examining appropriate spatial resolutions for objects of interest.
Updating a forest type map is essential for sustainable forest resource management and monitoring to cope with climate change and various environmental problems. According to the necessity of efficient and wide-area forestry remote sensing, CAS500-4 (Compact Advanced Satellite 500-4; The agriculture and forestry satellite) project has been confirmed and scheduled for launch in 2023. Before launching and utilizing CAS500-4, this study aimed to pre-evaluation the possibility of satellite-based tree species classification using RapidEye, which has similar specifications to the CAS500-4. In this study, the study area was the Chuncheon forest management complex, Gangwon-do. The spectral information was extracted from the growing season image. And the GLCM texture information was derived from the growing and non-growing seasons NIR bands. Both information were used to classification with random forest machine learning method. In this study, tree species were classified into nine classes to the coniferous tree (Korean red pine, Korean pine, Japanese larch), broad-leaved trees (Mongolian oak, Oriental cork oak, East Asian white birch, Korean Castanea, and other broad-leaved trees), and mixed forest. Finally, the classification accuracy was calculated by comparing the forest type map and classification results. As a result, the accuracy was 39.41% when only spectral information was used and 69.29% when both spectral information and texture information was used. For future study, the applicability of the CAS500-4 will be improved by substituting additional variables that more effectively reflect vegetation's ecological characteristics.

Throughout analyzing and construing the words, contexts, and expressive languages used for depicting the pine tree in the novel "Honbul" written by Choi, Myung-Hee the symbolism of the pine and folksy languages used for scenery can be condensed as written below: First, it is explicit that the scenery-words for illustrating the pine tree in "Honbul" are emerged through diverse means methods and expressions. Namely, the reference forms of the pine tree and the expressive means of utilizing words portrays the use of the pine are various and subdivided. Second, the scenery-words found in vocabularies and the contexts of "Honbul" imply various symbolic representation. They not only perform to describe inherent image and symbolism of the pine, but they work for reifying the image of "Honbul" in the narrative structure in "Honbul" as being intrinsic scenery-word. Third, the scenery-words used for expressing aesthetics emerge as synesthetic expressions through the linear beauty and the texture of the pine as well as through five-senses. Forth, on the basis of the inherent symbolism and the image of the pine, the landscape of the background described in "Honbul" deems as a symbolic backdrop. As with then narrative structure of the novel, the pine tree performs as a mediation of the heaven and the earth, god and man, as well as the sacred and the secular. Fifth, scenery-words used for depicting the pine tree are a symbol that represents the spirit and emotion of the character in the novel. Moreover, it is a tool for pursuing the personification of the nature, the deification of the object, and the cosmos of the space. It is also utilized as a device that definitize the ideational image applied to express the landscape of the background of the novel. As mentioned above, the expressions, vocabularies and textures about pine tree represented from "Honbul" are expected to be the beginning of understanding the landscape-images and landscape-languages of pine in not only the setting for this novels, Namwon but also the entire districts of Korea.
