  • Histopathology is a well-established standard diagnosis employed for the majority of malignancies, including breast cancer. Nevertheless, despite training and standardization, it is considered operator-dependent and errors are still a concern. Fractal dimension analysis is a computational image processing technique that allows assessing the degree of complexity in patterns. We aimed here at providing a robust and easily attainable method for introducing computer-assisted techniques to histopathology laboratories. Slides from two databases were used: A) Breast Cancer Histopathological; and B) Grand Challenge on Breast Cancer Histology. Set A contained 2480 images from 24 patients with benign alterations, and 5429 images from 58 patients with breast cancer. Set B comprised 100 images of each type: normal tissue, benign alterations, in situ carcinoma, and invasive carcinoma. All images were analyzed with the FracLac algorithm in the ImageJ computational environment to yield the box count fractal dimension (Db) results. Images on set A on 40x magnification were statistically different (p = 0.0003), whereas images on 400x did not present differences in their means. On set B, the mean Db values presented promising statistical differences when comparing. Normal and/or benign images to in situ and/or invasive carcinoma (all p < 0.0001). Interestingly, there was no difference when comparing normal tissue to benign alterations. These data corroborate with previous work in which fractal analysis allowed differentiating malignancies. Computer-aided diagnosis algorithms may beneficiate from using Db data; specific Db cut-off values may yield ~ 99% specificity in diagnosing breast cancer. Furthermore, the fact that it allows assessing tissue complexity, this tool may be used to understand the progression of the histological alterations in cancer.

  • Many radiological modalities has been applied to medicine as a basic fundamental diagnosis and therapy recently. The prevalence of computer systems affect most images to be digitized. However conventional X-ray film images are not digital images eventhough they covers 70% of all radiologica images. This is the hinderacne of building PACS. In this paper all radiological digital imaging parts such as DSA. CR. MRI. SPECT. PET and ultrasonography were briefly introduced and the applications were described. In brief digital radiography contribute to enhance the medical service quality. And the digital substituition of conventional X-ray film image is inevitable.

  • The objective of this research is to develop the hardware and software systenls of the digital intravenous angiographic system. The system will be used in clinical diagnosis of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. By utilizing computer image processing technique and digital subtraction method, the system can decrease the patient's harzard and expenses in performing intravenous angiography, as compared with conventional angiograms of the arterial injection.

  • A medical image workstation was developed using multimedia technique. The system based on PC-486DX was designed to acquire medical images produced by medical imaging instruments and related audio information, that is, doctors' reporting results. Input information was processed and analyzed, then the results were presented in the form of graph and animation. All the informations of the system were hierarchically related with the image as the apex. Processing and analysis algorithms were implemented so that the diagnostic accuracy could be improved. The diagnosed information can be transferred for patient diagnosis through LAN(local area network).

  • Thyroid imaging was performed in 53 hyperthyroid cats with technetium-99m as pertechnetate($^{99m}TcO_{4}$). Increased radionuclide accumulation was found in all cats. Thirty-four cats had bilateral enlargements of the thyroid glands and 14 cats had unilateral enlargements. Five cats had multi-focal accumulation of $^{99m}TcO_{4}$ in the ventral neck or mediastinum. Conclusively, nuclear thyroid image is useful method in diagnosis of feline hyperthyroidism.

  • A remote measurement system for nerve conduction has been developed to aid patients with spinal cord injury by accident. Existing cooperation between rescuers and doctors can be supported through the introduction of multimedia desktop video conferencing. Such facilities provide several advantages over conventional video conferencing. In particular, patients may feel free because they can see a doctor through the video conferencing facilities. This paper describes the system implementation and evaluation. The author considers the network capability and image data handling, and introduces a method a transmit image data for this system.

  • In this paper, we propose the method of iris lacuna extraction using watershed transform. Lacuna is salient feature of iris. It has three dimensional structure formed by leak of pigmentation and loss of fiber tissues. Lacuna can be used for iris recognition system, and generally used in health diagnosis and character analysis with its shape and position. The main idea of the proposed method is applying the watershed transform to radial gray scale profile of iris image. The result shows that the lacuna can be extracted automatically from eye image.

  • Purpose: This study examined the influence of metal artifact reduction (MAR), the application of sharpening filters, and their combination on the diagnosis of horizontal root fracture (HRF) in teeth adjacent to a zirconia implant on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) examinations. Materials and Methods: Nineteen single-rooted teeth (9 with HRF and 10 without) were individually positioned in the right central incisor socket of a dry human maxilla. A zirconia implant was placed adjacent to each tooth. Imaging was performed using an OP300 Maxio CBCT (Instrumentarium, Tuusula, Finland) unit with the following settings: a current of 8 mA, both MAR modes(enabled and disabled), a 5×5 cm field of view, a voxel size of 0.085 mm, and a peak kilovoltage of 90 kVp. Four oral and maxillofacial radiologists independently evaluated the CBCT scans under both MAR conditions and across 3 levels of sharpening filter application (none, Sharpen 1×, and Sharpen 2×). Diagnostic metrics were calculated and compared using 2-way analysis of variance (α=5%). The weighted kappa test was used to assess intra- and inter-examiner reliability in the diagnosis of HRF. Results: MAR tool activation, sharpening filter use, and their combination did not significantly impact the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve, sensitivity, or specificity of HRF diagnosis (P>0.05). Intra- and inter-examiner agreement ranged from fair to substantial. Conclusion: The diagnosis of HRF in a tooth adjacent to a zirconia implant is not affected by the activation of MAR, the application of a sharpening filter, or the combination of these tools.

  • Purpose : The purpose of this article is to review the current status of dental caries diagnosis using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and Methods : An online PubMed search was performed to identify studies on caries research using CBCT. Results : Despite its usefulness, there were inherent limitations in the detection of caries lesions through conventional radiograph mainly due to the two-dimensional (2D) representation of caries lesions. Several efforts were made to investigate the three-dimensional (3D) image of lesion, only to gain little popularity. Recently, CBCT was introduced and has been used for diagnosis of caries in several reports. Some of them maintained the superiority of CBCT systems, however it is still under controversies. Conclusion : The CBCT systems are promising, however they should not be considered as a primary choice of caries diagnosis in everyday practice yet. Further studies under more standardized condition should be performed in the near future.
