  • Illumination variation is the most significant factor affecting face recognition rate. In this paper, we propose adaptive smoothing based on combined most significant bit (CMSB) - plane and local entropy for robust face recognition in varying illumination. Illumination normalization is achieved based on Retinex method. The proposed method has been evaluated based on the CMU PIE database by using Principle Component Analysis (PCA).

  • This paper introduces GP(Genetic Programming) based color detection model for an object detection of humanoid robot vision. Existing color detection methods have used linear/nonlinear transformation of RGB color-model. However, most of cases have difficulties to classify colors satisfactory because of interference of among color channels and susceptibility for illumination variation. Especially, they are outstanding in degraded images from robot vision. To solve these problems, we propose illumination robust and non-parametric multi-colors detection model using evolution of GP. The proposed method is compared to the existing color-models for various environments in robot vision for real humanoid Nao.

  • This paper is concerned with the template-based face recognition from robot camera images with illumination and distance variations. The approaches used in this paper consist of Eigenface, Fisherface, and Icaface which are the most representative recognition techniques frequently used in conjunction with face recognition. These approaches are based on a popular unsupervised and supervised statistical technique that supports finding useful image representations, respectively. Thus we focus on the performance comparison from robot camera images with unwanted variations. The comprehensive experiments are completed for a databases with illumination and distance variations.

  • Surveillance system with the fixed field of view generally has an identical background and is easy to extract and segment a moving object. However, it is difficult to extract the object when the gray level of the background is varied due to illumination condition in the real circumstance. In this paper we propose the segmentation algorithm to extract effectively the object in spite of the illumination change. In order to minimize the effect of illumination, the proposed algorithm is composed of three modes according to the background generation and the illuminational change. Then the object is finally obtained by using projection and the morphological operator in post-processing. A good segmentation performance is demonstrated by the simulation result.

  • Color distribution is changed according to the variation of illumination position and illumination color. Therefore, even if images are relevant each other, retrieval accuracy is degraded. In this paper, we propose the image retrieval method using color information excluded illumination component. The proposed dynamic range control method removes the shadow region generated by change of illumination position to increase the color discrimination power. To exclude the illuminant color, we use the diffuse reflection component of object and gray world assumption. The experimental results show that the color histogram method using color information excluded illuminant has higher retrieval accuracy than conventional color histogram using the color information of input image.

  • Inducing the natural lighting into building has been commonly applied to the spaces where artistic objects are displayed to create better visual environment for the appreciation. The direct natural lighting, especially through top lighting system may, however, bring forth discoloing of highly light-sensitive materials such as paintings or demanding additional cooling load. In addition, it causes to create glare against appreciators or to yield in visual distraction due to the extreme contrast on the inner surfaces of the spaces. Shading device such as louver is capable of preventing such voidable cases with careful manipulation. This study aims to provide basic design guide-line when the flat-form louver has to be applied to top lighting system. Interaction between the daylight and louver was simulated by Reluxpro program with variation of the attachment location, the angle of the lover, surface reflectivity, to obtain the illumination of the floor surface. This study yields the louver just under the top lighting window with 90 degree angle gives the most desirable way of employment when the uniform illumination on the floor surface is required.

  • In this study, the design conditions for the Korean-style glass greenhouse structure has been reduced to achieve the most efficient use of natural light. The AGI program was simulated for the optimal conditions of daylight in a glass greenhouse. From the results of daylight simulation, the axis position of the glass greenhouse's roof was not an important factor in the daylight effects regarding illumination and uniformity. In summer, there were long periods of daylight and high illumination levels. The illumination value of daylighting increased with increasing glass transparency value, and the illumination value was greatest at 14:00 hours. At this time, the rate of light variation according to the glass transparency was 89 [lux/%]. In addition, the optimal design conditions for the glass greenhouse were established, which were a $30[^{\circ}]$ or $150[^{\circ}]$ installation angle and higher transmittance of glass.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of night illumination on the growth and yield of sesame(Sesamum indicum) and perilla(Perilla frutescens). Stem length and height of the first pod in sesame increased, whereas number of branch was reduced and flowering date and maturing date delayed as light intensity of night illumination increased. Number of capsules per plant, ripening ratio and seed yield of sesame were reduced as light intensity of night illumination increased. Yield reduction was greater in Ahnsankkae than in Sodunkkae. Number of nodes increased under night illumination in perilla. Two test cultivars showed reduction in number of branch at 6~10 Lx(22 ㎽ m$^{-2}$ ) intensity of night illumination, even though there was a variation between cultivars. Perilla was sensitive to night illumination far flowering and ripening. Flowering date was delayed by 21 to 28 days at 6~10 Lx intensity of night illumination. Number of flower clusters, number of seeds per flower cluster, and 1,000-seed weight in perilla were significantly reduced and seed yield was reduced by 89 to 98% at 6-10 Lx intensity of night illumination.

  • Purpose: This study was performed in order to figure out the influence of illumination on visual function. Methods: 40 adults (male 21, female 19) of average age $23.93{\pm}1.59$ years were participated in this study. The test chart surface illumination was adjusted to 5, 50, 200, 500 and 800 lx, and then amplitude of accommodation, near point of convergence, far and near distance phoria, far and near distance fusional vergence, relative accommodation, and accommodation lag were measured at each illumination condition. Results: As illumination intensity of test chart was reduced, amplitude of accommodation was significantly decreased (p<0.05), accommodation lag was also decreased, near point of convergence was receded, and horizontal phoria showed a tendency of esodeviation. In the case of negative fusional vergence, with reduction of illumination intensity, the break point and the recovery point were decreased but in the case of positive fusional vergence, the break point was increased. The negative and positive relative accommodation were significantly decreased (p<0.05) with reduction of illumination intensity. Conclusions: In clinical practice, visual functional test should be performed under condition of adequate illumination level through patient's living environment and job.

  • The purpose of this study is to find the light intensity which induced maximum gathering rate and to observe the variation of the gathering rate both in daytime and at night by using rock trout, He.'~agrammos otakii (Jordan et starks). An experimental tank (360L x SOW x 55H cm) was set up in a dark room. An illumination system was attached to the end of one side of the tank to control horizontal light intensity. Six artificial light sources were prepared by combination of two light bulbs (5 W, 150 W) and seven filters. During the experiment water depth was maintained 50 em level in the tank. The tank was marked into six longitudinal sections each being 60 em long to observe the distribution of fish. The fish were acclimatized in dark condition for 50 minutes prior to the main experiment. Upon turning on the light, the number of fish in each section was counted 40 times every 30 seconds. and the gathering rate was obtained from the average number of fish in each section. The light intensity inducing maximum gathering rate was O. 7 lux (0. 5~1. 1 lux) in the daytime and 5. 2/ux (3.2-7.7 lux) at night. The variation of the gathering rate of fish in illumination time was sma II and showed the decreasing trend.
