  • Capacitance-type alcohol gas sensors using porous silicon (PS) layer as sensitive film were fabricated to measure low alcohol gas concentration. Though sensors using porous silicon layer have show high sensitivity by large internal surface area, there is still much room for improvement to measure low breath alcohol concentration especially at room temperature. In this work, to discuss the response properties against exposure to organic vapor for breath alcohol measurements on the basis of experimental results. we measured the variation of the capacitance for the range of 0 to 0.5% alcohol concentration, and observed the improvement of sensitivity by illumination of UV light. In addition, the effect of CO2 and N2 gases involved commonly in exhaling breath was estimated, and the same procedure against methanol vapor was executed to compare qualitatively with the capacitance characteristics by alcohol vapor.

  • In this paper, electrical characteristics of inductively coupled plasma in an electrodeless fluorescent lamp were investigated using a Langmuir probe with a variation of Ar gas pressure. The RF output was applied in the range of 5-50W at 13.56MHz. The internal plasma voltage of the chamber and the probe current were measured while varying the supply voltage to the Langmuir probe in the range of -100V ${\sim}$ +100V. When the pressure of Ar gas was increased, electric current was decreased. There was a significant electric current increase when the applied RF power was increased from 10 W to 30 W. This implies that this method can be used to find an optimal RF power for efficient light illumination in an electrodeless fluorescent lamp.

  • This paper describes a robust visual surveillance algorithm under outdoor environment. One of the difficult problems for outdoor is to obtain effective updating process of background images. Because background images generally contain the shadows of buildings, trees, moving clouds and other objects, they are changed by lapse of time and variation of illumination. They provide the lowering of performance for surveillance system under outdoor. In this paper, a robust algorithm for visual surveillance system under outdoor is proposed, which apply the mixture Gaussian filter and color invariant property on pixel level to update background images. In results, it was showed that the moving objects can be detected on various shadows under outdoor.

  • New real-time confocal microscopy using spectral encoding technique and slit confocal aperture is proposed and designed. Spectral encoding technique, which encodes one-dimensional spatial information of a specimen in wavelength, and slit aperture make it possible to obtain two-dimensional lateral image of the specimen simultaneously at standard video rates without expensive scanning units such as polygon mirrors and galvano mirrors. The working principle and the configuration of the system are explained. The variation in axial responses for the simplified model of the system with normalized slit width is numerically analyzed based on the wave optics theory. Slit width that directly affects the depth discrimination of the system is determined by a compromise between axial resolution and signal intensity from the simulation result. On the assumption of the lateral sampling resolution of 50 nm, design variables and governing equations of the system are derived. The system is designed to have the mapping error less than the half pixel size, to be diffraction-limited and to have the maximum illumination efficiency. The designed system has the FOV of $12.8um{\times}9.6um$, the theoretical axial FWHM of 1.1 um and the lateral magnification of-367.8.

  • For two well-known modulation methods, stepwise current modulation (SCM) and pulse width modulation (PWM), the effects of driving current modulation conditions on chromaticity were experimentally investigated in a white LED lighting system. For the experimental implementation of both SCM and PWM, a white LED lighting was fabricated using phosphor converted (PC) white light emitting diodes (LEDs) and a driving circuit module was developed. By using them, the variations of illuminance, color coordinates, and spectrum were evaluated under various forward current conditions. Through the analysis in color coordinates, yellow shift in SCM and blue shift in PWM were observed on chromaticity diagrams with increasing average driving current. In addition, in order to analyze color deviation quantitatively, color distance before and after current increase, and the correlated color temperature (CCT) were calculated. As a result, for the white LED lighting in both modulation conditions, the maximum difference in the calculated CCT was obtained close to 1000 K. It means that careful consideration is required to be taken in the design of illumination systems to avoid serious problems such industrial accidents.

  • To deal with single sample face recognition, this paper presents a patch based semi-supervised linear regression (PSLR) algorithm, which draws facial variation information from unlabeled samples. Each facial image is divided into overlapped patches, and a regression model with mapping matrix will be constructed on each patch. Then, we adjust these matrices by mapping unlabeled patches to $[1,1,{\cdots},1]^T$. The solutions of all the mapping matrices are integrated into an overall objective function, which uses ${\ell}_{2,1}$-norm minimization constraints to improve discrimination ability of mapping matrices and reduce the impact of noise. After mapping matrices are computed, we adopt majority-voting strategy to classify the probe samples. To further learn the discrimination information between probe samples and obtain more robust mapping matrices, we also propose a multistage PSLR (MPSLR) algorithm, which iteratively updates the training dataset by adding those reliably labeled probe samples into it. The effectiveness of our approaches is evaluated using three public facial databases. Experimental results prove that our approaches are robust to illumination, expression and occlusion.

  • Intelligent human identification using face information has been the research hotspot ranging from Internet of Things (IoT) application, intelligent self-service bank, intelligent surveillance to public safety and intelligent access control. Since 2D face images are usually captured from a long distance in an unconstrained environment, to fully exploit this advantage and make human recognition appropriate for wider intelligent applications with higher security and convenience, the key difficulties here include gray scale change caused by illumination variance, occlusion caused by glasses, hair or scarf, self-occlusion and deformation caused by pose or expression variation. To conquer these, many solutions have been proposed. However, most of them only improve recognition performance under one influence factor, which still cannot meet the real face recognition scenario. In this paper we propose a multi-scale parallel convolutional neural network architecture to extract deep robust facial features with high discriminative ability. Abundant experiments are conducted on CMU-PIE, extended FERET and AR database. And the experiment results show that the proposed algorithm exhibits excellent discriminative ability compared with other existing algorithms.

  • Image always carry useful information, detecting a text from scene images is imperative. The proposed work's purpose is to recognize scene text image, example boarding image kept on highways. Scene text detection on highways boarding's plays a vital role in road safety measures. At initial stage applying preprocessing techniques to the image is to sharpen and improve the features exist in the image. Likely, morphological operator were applied on images to remove the close gaps exists between objects. Here we proposed a two phase algorithm for extracting and recognizing text from scene images. In phase I text from scenery image is extracted by applying various image preprocessing techniques like blurring, erosion, tophat followed by applying thresholding, morphological gradient and by fixing kernel sizes, then canny edge detector is applied to detect the text contained in the scene images. In phase II text from scenery image recognized using MSER (Maximally Stable Extremal Region) and OCR; Proposed work aimed to detect the text contained in the scenery images from popular dataset repositories SVT, ICDAR 2003, MSRA-TD 500; these images were captured at various illumination and angles. Proposed algorithm produces higher accuracy in minimal execution time compared with state-of-the-art methodologies.

  • In this study, the thermal environmental factors in a layer f(arm such as dry bulb temperature, relative humidity, black globe temperature and illumination intensity were measured and analyzed to serve as basis for effective design and plan of poultry houses. The correlation analysis between the different factors was also done. Heat Index as measure of the thermal stress was also calculated and analyzed. A $1,000m^2$ laying house, 4 meters high with 52,000 layers in six-stage type cages was used in the measurement of the different environmental parameters. The results were as follows; 1. The temperature of the inside air and materials was directly related to the increase in aerial temperature based on the dry-bulb, black globe temperature reading. The correlation factor of the outside to inside air based on dry bulb setting was very significant at 0.927 The dry bulb temperature for inside temperature ranged from $19.9\~28.8^{\circ}C\;with\;SD+2.2^{\circ}C$ while that of the outside air was $16.2\~33.1^{\circ}C,\;SD+3.5^{\circ}C$. In addition, the temperature of the inside air was very stable. 2. The black globe temperature of the inside air ranged from $20.1\~28.8^{\circ}C,\;SD+2.3^{\circ}C$ while that of the outside air was $16.2\~47.5^{\circ}C,\;SD+6.0^{\circ}C$. 3. The relative humidity of the outside and inside air was $72.4\~100\;and\;50.2\~85.6\%$ with an average of $89.2\;and\;71.7\%$, respectively. 4. The illumination intensity in the laying house was less than 7 lux, with an average of $1.2\~2.5lux$ relative to height indicating that the laying house was well isolated from outside radiation. 5. The heat index of the inside air of the laying house had a high variation from $20.5^{\circ}C,\;SD+2.5^{\circ}C$ while that of the outside air was $13.1\~45.5^{\circ}C$, with an average of $21.6^{\circ}C,\;SD+6.3^{\circ}C$.

  • The purpose of the present study is to find the light intensity which induces maximum gathering rate and to observe the variation of the gathering rate both in daytime and at night by rising two species of commercial fishes: gray rock cod. Sebastes inermis (Cuvier et Valenciennes) and cat shark, Scyliorhinus torazame (Tanaka). An experimental tank $(360L\;{\times}\;50W\;{\times}\;55H\;cm)$ was set up in a dark room. An illumination system was attached to one end of the tank to control horizontal light intensity. Six artificial light sources were prepared by combination of two light bulbs (5W, 150W) and seven filters. During the experiment water depth was maintained 50 cm level in the tank. The tank was marked into six longitudinal sections each being 60 cm long to observe the distribution of fish. The fish were acclimatized in dark condition for 40 minutes prior to the main experiment. Upon turning on the light, the number of fish in each section was counted 40 times every 30 seconds, and the gathering rates were obtain from the average number of fish in each section. The light intensity inducing maximum gathering rate is as follows: gray rock cod: 16.6 lux (10.6-24.5 lux) (day), 0.7 lux (0.5-1.1 lux) (night), cat shark: 1.9 lux (1.2-2.9 lux) (day), 16.6 lux(10.6-24.5lux) (night). Trend of the gathering rate in illumination time revealed different results in two fish species. Gathering rate of gray rock cod did not show any definite pattern but fluctuated irregularly. The gathering rate was some fluctuating at night. However, that of cat shark was almost constant and did not show any distinctive difference between day and night.
