Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of illness perception on depression and quality of life in patients with hemodialysis. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study using structural equation modeling. Depression, quality of life and cognitive and emotional illness perceptions were measured by the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression-10 (CESD-10), Short Form-36 version 2 (SF-36v2), and Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire (BIPQ) in 272 hemodialysis patients. Results: Prevalence of depression was 76.1%, and higher in female patients on hemodialysis. Cognitive illness perception had effect on depression and quality of life, while emotional illness perception had effect only on depression. Quality of life was explained 69.6% through depression (${\beta}=-.74$, t= -8.17) and cognitive illness perceptions (${\beta}=.21$, t= 3.06), while depression was explained 40.5% through cognitive (${\beta}=-.34$, t= -5.99) and emotional (${\beta}=.59$, t= 9.37) illness perceptions. Conclusion: In the inevitable choice of dialysis, illness perception could decrease depression and improve quality of life in hemodialysis patients.

Purpose: This study aimed to examine the mediating effect of illness perception on the relationship between family function and health behavior of patients with risk factors for metabolic syndrome. Methods: This is a cross-sectional correlational study. Data were collected from 160 patients using self-administered questionnaires including the Illness Perception Questionnaire-Revised, Family APGAR, and the Health Behavior Scale. The data were analyzed using Pearson's correlation coefficients, independent t-test and multiple linear regression analysis by the SPSS 23.0 program. Results: Health behavior was significantly correlated with family function (r=.30, p<.001) and illness perception of controllability by treatment (r=-.21, p=.007). Family function was a significant predictor of health behavior and illness perception, and the influence of family function on health behavior was partially mediated by illness perception of controllability by treatment. Conclusion: The findings of this study indicate that family function is a critical factor affecting health behavior and illness perception, and illness perception of controllability by treatment mediates the influence of family function on health behavior. It is necessary to develop a psycho-cognitive intervention program for enhancing supportive family function and for modifying negative illness perceptions to improve health behavior in patients with risk factors for metabolic syndrome.

Purpose: A descriptive study was conducted to examine the relationship of illness perception, self-efficacy, and self-care of patients who were diagnosed pulmonary tuberculosis. Methods: The study was conducted using a convenient sample from two hospitals in Incheon and Seoul. One hundred forty four patients completed a questionnaire which included questions on general characteristics, a Brief Illness Perception Scale, a Self-efficacy Scale and a Self-care Scale. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson Moment Correlations and stepwise multiple regression analysis. Results: There was a statistically significant positive correlation between illness perception and self-care (r=.335, p=.000) and between self-efficacy and self-care (r=.687, p=.000). Stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that among the three variables the most powerful predictor was self-efficacy. Self-efficacy and illness perception were significant factors and accounted for 54.2% of the variance of self care in pulmonary tuberculosis patients. Conclusion: Self-efficacy and illness perception were influencing factors in self care among patients with pulmonary tuberculosis. Hence further interventional researches are needed that consider these two variables.

We systematically reviewed the studies administering the Illness Perception Questionnaire-Revised (IPQ-R) or the Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire (BIPQ) in South Korea. Following the PRISMA guidelines, a literature search of 4 electronic databases was conducted, yielding 10 relevant articles. All studies used a cross-sectional design and the majority of the studies (n = 7; 70%) used the total scores of the BIPQ. The factors related to participants' illness perceptions were coping strategies or health outcomes such as depression, quality of life, self-care, and social support; however, findings suggested that such factors varied across the studies. This review highlights the need for using each dimension of illness perception to examine which perceptions are most strongly related to outcomes, and need for considering an individual's illness perceptions when developing biobehavioral interventions.

Purpose: This study aimed to examine the effects of education program by illness on perception of illness and knowledge of medication in psychiatric inpatients. Methods: The research design was a non-equivalent and non-synchronized control group design. For this research, a total of 50 subjects was selected at a psychiatric unit of C university hospital in U-city. The experimental group consisted of 24 subjects and they received education program by illness 1 session per a week for 4 weeks. The remaining 26 subjects were assigned to the control group and they received standard services except the education program by illness. In data analysis, SPSS/WIN 15.0 program was used. Results: The experimental group significantly improved compared to the control group in perception of illness and knowledge of medication. Conclusion: This study results suggest that education program by illness could be effective to improve perception of illness and knowledge of medication in psychiatric inpatients.

Purpose: This study was done to investigate the correlation of illness perception, coping strategy and health status in patients with acute coronary syndrome who had undergone a coronary angioplasty. Methods: A descriptive correlational design was used in this study. A total of 102 patients with acute coronary syndrome was recruited. Data were collected using structured questionnaires including scales for the illness perception, the coping strategy, and health status. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis. Results: Health status showed significant correlations with illness perception (r=-.44, p<.001) and avoidance coping (r=-.33, p=.001); illness perception, avoidance coping explained 21% of variance in health status (F=8.58, p<.001). The factors that influenced health status were illness perception (${\beta}=-.37$, p<.001), and avoidance coping (${\beta}=-.21$, p<.001). Conclusion: The findings of this study indicate that illness perception and avoidance coping were significant variables for health status in patients with acute coronary syndrome who had undergone a coronary angioplasty.

Purpose: To determine associations of illness symptoms, perception of illness, coping with quality of life (QOL) of thyroid cancer patients and identify factors affecting their QOL. Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed using a self-administered questionnaire for 111 thyroid cancer patients after thyroidectomy. They were recruited from the outpatient clinic of one university hospital. Data collection was conducted from August 2018 to November 2018. Results: The QOL was significantly associated with interpersonal coping (β= 0.31, p< .001), monthly household income (β= 0.30, p< .001), illness symptoms (β= -0.22, p= .017), perception of illness (β= -0.20, p= .031), and education (β= 0.18, p= .037) in stepwise multiple regression. These factors explained 33.1% of QOL of thyroid cancer patients. Conclusion: Interpersonal coping is a major contributing factor to QOL. Therefore, thyroid cancer patients need good interpersonal coping for better quality of life.

Purpose: This study was designed to identify factors affecting depression among hospitalized older adults prior to discharge from an acute care hospital. Methods: This descriptive study included adults aged 65 or older who were hospitalized in a general hospital in Seoul, Korea. Depression was measured by the Short Form Geriatric Depression Scale and illness perception was evaluated by the Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire. Social support was examined using the Perceived Geriatric Social Support Scale. Data were collected from August 25 to October 12, 2015. Data analysis included descriptive statistics, independent t-test, Kruskal-Wallis test, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and hierarchical multiple regression. Results: Among a total of 120 participants, 57 patients (47.5%) experienced depression. Mean depression score was $7.37{\pm}3.67$. Depression was associated with illness perception (r=.53, p<.001), social support (r=-.19, p=.043), number of admission due to the recurrence (r=.31, p=.001), and time to recognize discharge plan (r=.25, p=.044). In hierarchical multiple regression, illness perception (${\beta}=.45$, p<.001) and time to recognize discharge plan (${\beta}=.21$, p=.039) were predictors of depression (F=7.68, p<.001, Adjusted $R^2=.38$). Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that management of illness perception and timely notice of discharge are important to reduce depression in hospitalized elderly patients.

The purpose of this study was to investigate middle school students` perceptions on foodborne illness prevention in relation to their personal hygiene practices. The survey was administered in July, 2007 at one middle school, with a total of 390 students participating. The self-completed questionnaire consisted of several questions regarding the students` awareness of foodborne illness, perceptions of foodborne illness prevention, and personal hygiene practices. T-tests were used to identify the differences in their perceptions of foodborne illness prevention based on gender and Chi square tests were used to identify the relationships between their perceptions of foodborne illness prevention and personal hygiene practices. Eight percent of the respondents experienced foodborne illness at least once a year and 33.8% of them have stopped eating certain foods due to anxiety towards foodborne illness. The students perceived school foods (26.0%) and street foods(17.9%) as the main sources of foodborne illness, and dairy products(20.0%) and fresh fish (19.7%) were considered foods having the greatest potential for causing foodborne illness. Many students were aware of Escherichia coli O157(43.1%) and Hepatitis A(23.3%), but only a few recognized Clostridium botulinum(4.1%) and Salmonella(7.9%), even though these are major foodborne illness-causing pathogens. The students considered foodborne illness prevention very important(mean = 4.33); also, the results showed that many washed their hands 3-4 times (34.1%) and 5-6 times(29.2%) per day. Hand washing frequency was significantly related to the perceived importance of personal hygiene practice as well as to education on safety and sanitation. However, the students` perception on the importance of personal hygiene practices were not significantly different based on having received safety and sanitation education. Ultimately, these results will be used to develop guidelines for effective education on safety and sanitation.

The purpose of this study was to investigate differences in the perception and attitudes of middle school students toward food safety between those who possess high behavioral intentions to prevent contracting a foodborne illness and those who do not. The survey collected 871 usable data from several middle schools in Seoul, Korea in July 2007. Using six behavioral intention measurement items, a two-step cluster analysis approach was conducted resulting in a strong intention group and a weak intention group. Perception and attitudes toward foods safety were different between the two groups. Students with strong behavioral intentions to prevent foodborne illness tended to possess a stronger perception and attitude toward various food safety issues. Students with strong intentions were more certain of consumer's right to purchase safe foods, more concerned about foodborne illness and food safety, believed that the government should put more efforts toward establishing a safe food chain, possess more distrust for food suppliers, were more aware of specific foodborne illness pathogens, had more food safety education/training, and washed their hands more frequently than those with less strong intentions. No significant differences were found between the groups but,overall, chemical residues and food additives were perceived as more harmful and more serious food safety issues than those of foodborne illness pathogens despite that microorganisms are the main cause of foodborne illness outbreaks in schools. Participants seemed to underestimate the importance of temperature control for preventing foodborne outbreaks. Several implications and suggestions on how to improve the behavioral intentions of middle school students to prevent possible foodborne illness were provided.
