The purpose of this study was to investigate the reduction of exhaust gas temperature in a LPG engine that had been converted from a diesel engine. A conventional diesel engine was modified to a LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) engine by replacing the diesel fuel injection pump with a LPG fuel system. The research was performed by measuring the exhaust gas temperature upon varying spark ignition timing, airfuel ratio, compression ratio, and different compositions of butane and propane. Engine power and exhaust temperature were not influenced by various butane/propane fuel compositions. Finally, among the parameters studied in this investigation, spark ignition timing is one of the most important in reducing exhaust gas temperature.

HCCI (Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition) combustion has a great advantage in reducing NOx (Nitrogen Oxides) and PM (Particulate Matter) by lowering the combustion temperature due to spontaneous ignitions at multiple sites in a very lean combustible mixture. However, it is difficult to make a diesel-fuelled HCCI possible because of a poor vaporability of the fuel. To resolve this problem, the two-stage injection strategy was introduced to promote the ignition of the extremely early injected fuel. The compression ratio and air-fuel ratio were found to affect not only the ignition, but also control the combustion phase without a need for the intake-heating or EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation). The ignition timing could be controlled even at a higher compression ratio with increased IMEP (Indicated Mean Effective Pressure). The NOx (Nitrogen Oxides) emission level could be reduced by more than 90 % compared with that in a conventional DI (Direct Injection) diesel combustion mode, but the increase of PM and HC (Hydrocarbon) emissions due to over-penetration of spray still needs to be resolved.

Controlled auto-ignition(CAI) combustion, offers the potential to improve fuel economy and reduce emission simultaneously. In this study, CAI-combustion was achieved in a single cylinder gasoline DI engine with modified camshafts in order to restrict the gas exchange process. We investigated the effects of air-fuel ratio, residual EGR rate and injection timing such as early injection and late injection on the attainable CAI combustion region. The effect of injection timings on combustion characteristic such as start of combustion, combustion duration and heat release rate was also investigated. From the result early injection causes the mixture to ignite earlier and burn more quickly due to the exothermic reaction during the recompression and gives rise to good mixing of the fuel/air. On the other hand, late injection extended the operation region more than early injection but the emissions of HC and NOx were more or less increased than early injection.
Natural gas is a promising alternative fuel of internal combustion engines. In this paper, the combustion and emission characteristics were investigated on a natural gas engine at two different fuel injection timings during the intake stroke. The results show that fuel injection timing affects combustion processes. The optimum spark timing (MBT) achieving the maximum indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP) is related to fuel injection timing and air fuel ratio. At MBT spark timing, late fuel injection timing delays ignition timing and prolongs combustion duration in most cases. But fuel injection timing has little effect on IMEP at fixed lambdas. The coefficient of variation (COV) of IMEP is dependent on air fuel ratio, throttle positions and fuel injection timings at MBT spark timing. The COV of IMEP increases with lambda in most cases. Late fuel injection timings can reduce the COV of IMEP at part loads. Moreover, engine-out CO and total hydrocarbon (THC) emissions can be reduced at late fuel injection timing.

Study on differential pressure in the chamber of cannon by adjusting the mass flow of ignition-gas has been conducted using the 1-D interior ballistics numerical code called IBcode. In case of large-caliber cannon, high temperature ignition-gas is injected to the chamber through the side hole of the primer to ignite the propellant. Therefore, mass flow of injected ignition-gas affects the propellant combustion in the chamber. Mass flow of each side hole of the current primer was uniformly distributed. In this study, differences of propellant combustion with different mass flow of each side hole have been imposed. Results in case of the mass flow increase in the direction to the base show that the differential pressure decreases compared to the uniformed mass flow.

The purpose of this study was to investigate reduction of exhaust gas temperature in LPG conversion engine from diesel. A conventional diesel engine was modified to a LPG(Liquified Petroleum Gas) engine that diesel fuel injection pump was replaced by the LPG fuel system. The research was peformed with measurement of exhaust gas temperature by varying spark ignition timing, air-fuel ratio, compression ratio, EGR ratio and different compositions of butane and propane. The major conclusion of this work were followed. (i) Exhaust gas temperature was decreased and power was increased with the advanced spark ignition timing. (ii) Exhaust gas temperature was decreased with lean and rich air-fuel ratio. (iii)Exhaust gas temperature was decreased and power was increased with the higher compression ratio. (iv) Engine power and exhaust temperature were not influenced by varied butane/propane fuel compositions. (v) Finally, one of the important parameters in reduction of exhaust gas temperature is spark ignition timing among the parameters in this study.

In recent years, there has been an interest in early-injection diesel engines as it has the potential of achieving a more homogeneous and leaner mixture close to TDC compared to standard diesel engine. The more homogeneous mixture may result in reduced NOx and soot emissions and higher efficiency in homogeneous charge compression ignition engines. While earlier studies have shown that a reduction in NOx emissions from HCCI engine is possible, there are some significant problems including the control of ignition timing and combustion rate. In order to investigate the effect of EGR and hydrogen enriched gas on combustion characteristics and emissions, an experiments with single cylinder CRDi engine were carried out concerning the formation of various premixed charge, which can achieved by early injection, EGR and hydrogen enriched gas. EGR was not effective to further reduce NOx and PM emissions. It was found that NOx emissions were decreased with an introduction of hydrogen enriched gas and an adequate diesel fuel amount.

Performance analysis of the interior ballistics has been conducted using the 1-D numerical code called IBcode according to the various conditions such as length of ignition-gas injector, amount of ignition-gas, mass of projectile, and drag force of projectile. In case of the length of ignition-gas injector, the 25~100 % of the full-injector length has been considered as well as the mass & mass flow of the ignition-gas. The mass of the projectile 5~70 kg and its drag force of 0~69 MPa have been also considered. Variables such as breech & base pressure, negative differential pressure and muzzle velocity for the performance analysis have been sorted, too. Firing conditions for the optimal performance have been investigated through these variables.

Intake gases other than air, which is composed of oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and argon, are used to study their effects on the performance of the diesel engine experimentally. The engine is operated at constant speed and fixed fuel injection timing, and cylinder pressure and heat release rate are measured at various intake gas compositions. The results show that increase of oxygen concentration improves the performance of the engine generally. The adverse effect is observed when the oxygen concentration is increased over the critical oxygen concentration of this test, mainly because of the over-shortened ignition delay. Increase of carbon dioxide concentration degardes the performance of the engine, mainly due to the lower specific heat ratio of carbon dioxide. Adding argon gas to the intake gas improves the overall performance. Finally, it is found that two most influencing factors affecting the performance of the diesel engine in this study are ignition delay and speific heat ratio of the intake gas.

Aero gas turbine engines must demonstrate their ability to be ignited on ground conditions or relighted in flight. The electric spark ignition is usually used in current aero gas turbine engines. Experiments on ignition characteristics relating to spark igniter penetration depth under atmospheric pressure and temperature conditions were conducted on the model combustor which is scaled in 1/18. Exciter was operated during 2 seconds, and successful ignition phenomena were confirmed by the pressure rising sharply in combustor. In addition, instantaneous ignition images were captured by a high-speed camera. It showed kernel propagation and successful ignition events in the sector model combustor. Ignition test results showed that ignition limit with increase in penetration depth of the igniter plug was wider. When the penetration depth of the igniter plug increased under the same fuel injection pressure condition, successful ignition events were obtained in higher differential pressure conditions between inlet and outlet of the combustor. The results demonstrate that the ratio of the combustible mixture, which is exposed to the high temperature environment around the igniter plug tip, increases. Thereby affect the combustor ignition performance.
