After the accelerated aging, the bulkhead initiator using high explosives was carried out to verify aging characteristics. The Thru-Bulkhead Initiator operates by transmitting shock-wave generated from micro-initiator to the acceptor and the ignition explosives through the bulkhead. In order to evaluate the life-time of the product, the accelerated aging condition was set according to the life-time, and the ignition performance of the sample was measured every 10 cycles by measuring the delay time and the maximum pressure through the 10cc closed bomb test. In addition, variance analysis was used to determine aging.

The objective of this study is focused on the analyzing combustion, carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emission characteristics of marine diesel oil, utilized for naval propulsion engine, with varying pre-post injection timing of an optically accessible single cylinder engine. And also the combustion process is analyzed by means of a high speed camera visualization. On the result of retarding pre-injection timing toward main injection timing, the mean effective pressure and maximum pressure of combustion chamber are increased; however, the heat release rate is decreased. Furthermore, the emission rates of carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon are reduced in this case. In hence, when a post-injection timing is advanced, the mean effective pressure and maximum pressure are increased, because the combustion has been performed under the high temperature and high pressurized environment during main injection time, and the emission rates of carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon are increased. From the experimental results, it considered that retarding of pre-injection timing affects to shorten the ignition delay of main injection clearly, and to raise the flame intensity comparing to the advanced state. The ignition delay during post-injection is not appeared at any post-injection time, but the flame intensity has been weakened gradually according to the retarding of post-injection timing.
For process safety, fire and explosion characteristics of combustible materials handled at industrial fields must be available. The combustion properties for the prevention of the accidents in the work place are flash point, fire point, explosion limit, and autoignition temperature (AIT) etc.. However, the combustion properties suggested in the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) are presented differently according to the literatures. The accurate combustion properties are necessary to safely treatment, transportation and handling of flammable substances. In the chemical industries, n-ethylaniline which is widely used as a raw material of intermediate products and rubber chemicals was selected. For safe handling of n-ethyl aniline, the flash point, the fire point and the AIT were measured. The lower explosion limit (LEL)of n-ethylaniline was calculated using the lower flash point obtained in the experiment. The flash points of n- ethylaniline by using the Setaflash and Pensky-Martens closed-cup testers measured $77^{\circ}C$ and $82^{\circ}C$, respectively. The flash points of n-ethylaniline using the Tag and Cleveland open cup testers are measured $85^{\circ}C$ and $92^{\circ}C$, respectively. The AIT of the measured n-ethyl aniline by the ASTM E659 apparatus was measured at $396^{\circ}C$. The LEL of n-ethylaniline measured by Setaflash closed-cup tester at $77^{\circ}C$ was calculated to be 1.02 vol%. In this study, it was possible to predict the LEL by using the lower flash point of n-ethylaniline measured by closed-cup tester. The relationship between the ignition temperature and the ignition delay time of the n-ethylaniline proposed in this study makes it possible to predict the ignition delay time at different ignition temperatures.

The characteristics of autoignited lifted flames in laminar jets of carbon monoxide/hydrogen fuels have been investigated experimentally in heated coflow air. In result, as the jet velocity increased, the blowoff was directly occurred from the nozzle-attached flame without experiencing a stabilized lifted flame, in the non-autoignited regime. In the autoignited regime, the autoignited lifted flame of carbon monoxide diluted by nitrogen was affected by the water vapor content in the compressed air oxidizer, as evidenced by the variation of the ignition delay time estimated by numerical calculation. In particular, in the autoignition regime at low temperatures with added hydrogen, the liftoff height of the autoignited lifted flames decreased and then increased as the jet velocity increased. Based on the mechanism in which the autoignited laminar lifted flame is stabilized by ignition delay time, the liftoff height can be influenced not only by the heat loss, but also by the preferential diffusion between momentum and mass diffusion in fuel jets during the autoignition process.

The combustion characteristics of Boron-beads to improve the energy density of gas generator has been investigated in accordance with diameter of beads and their composition. In this paper, electrically heated tungsten sheet and visualized furnace are applied to measure ignition temperature and burning time of bead respectively. The results proposes ignition temperature between 720~800 K and burning time proportional to bead diameter. Also a ignition delay of boron particle is detected through the temperature and radiation intensity measurements.
Recently, with the expanding market for electronic devices and electric vehicles, secondary battery usage has been on the rise. Lithium-ion batteries are particularly popular due to their fast charging times and lightweight nature compared to other types of batteries. A secondary battery consists of four components: anode, cathode, electrolyte, and separator. Generally, the positive and negative electrode materials of secondary batteries are composed of an active material, a binder, and a conductive material. Acetylene Black (AB) is utilized to enhance conductivity between active material particles or metal dust collectors, preventing the binder from acting as an insulator. However, when recycling waste batteries that have been subject to high usage, there is a risk of fire and explosion accidents, as accurately identifying the characteristics of Acetylene Black dust proves to be challenging. In this study, the lower explosion limit for Acetylene Black dust with an average particle size of 0.042 ㎛ was determined to be 153.64 mg/L using a Hartmann-type dust explosion device. Notably, the dust did not explode at values below 168 mg, rendering the lower explosion limit calculation unfeasible. Analysis of explosion delay times with varying electrode gaps revealed the shortest delay time at 3 mm, with a noticeable increase in delay times for gaps of 4 mm or greater. The findings offer fundamental data for fire and explosion prevention measures in Acetylene Black waste recycling processes via a predictive model for lower explosion limits and ignition delay time.
For the safe handling of isopropyl alcohol, the explosion limits were investigated. The lower flash points, upper flash points, fire point, and AITs(autoignition temperatures) by ignition time delay for isopropyl alcohol were experimented. By using literature data, the lower and upper explosion limits of isopropyl alcohol were recommended as 2.0 and 12.0 vol%, respectively. The lower flash points of isopropyl alcohol were experimented $12{\sim}14^{\circ}C$ by using closed-cup tester and $18{\sim}19^{\circ}C$ by using open cup tester. And the upper flash points of isopropyl alcohol was experimented $38^{\circ}C$ by using Setaflash closed-cup tester. This study measured relationship between the AITs and the ignition delay times by using ASTM E659 apparatus was $463^{\circ}C$.

A MEMS solid propellant thruster array shall be operated within an allowable range of operating temperatures to avoid ignition failure by incomplete combustion due to a time delay in ignition. The structural safety of the MEMS thruster array under severe on-orbit thermal conditions can also be guaranteed by a suitable thermal control. In this study, we propose a thermal control strategy to perform on-orbit verification of a MEMS thruster module, which is expected to be the primary payload of the STEP Cube Lab mission. The strategy involves, the use of micro-igniters as heaters and temperature sensors for active thermal control because an additional heater cannot be implemented in the current design. In addition, we made efforts to reduce the launch loads transmitted to the MEMS thruster module at the system level structural design. The effectiveness of the proposed thermo-mechanical design strategy has been demonstrated by numerical analysis.

Experimental investigations on the comparison of developments between transient jets and evolving jet diffusion flames have been made in initial injection period. To achieve this experiment, an ignition technique using a residual flame as the ignition source is devised. High speed Schlieren visualizations, and measurements including jet tip penetration velocities and jet widths of the primary vortex are employed to examine the developing processes for several flow conditions. It is seen that the developing behaviors in the presence of flame are greatly different from those in transient jet, and thus the flow characteristics in the transient part are also modified. The discernible differences are shown to consist of the delay of the rollup of the primary vortex, the faster spreading after the rollup due to exothermic expansion, and the survival of only a primary vortex. The growth of primary vortex in the transient jet is properly explained through an impulsively started laminar vortex prior to the interaction. It is also found that the jet tip penetration velocity varies with elapsed time and an increase in Res gives rise to a higher tip penetration velocity.
Ignition delay of second injection of HSDI diesel engine was usually much shorter than that of first injection. It is due to the interaction between radicals generated during the combustion process, and mixed gas of second injection. In this paper, To analyze combustion phenomena of multiple injection mode in HSDI diesel engine effectively, two-dimensional flamelet combustion model was modified. To reduce calculation time, two-dimensional flamelet equations were only applied near stoichiometric region. If this region was ignited, species and temperature of other region were changed to the steady-state solutions of one dimensional flamelet equations. By this method calculation time for solving flamelet equations was reduced to 20 percents, thought the results were almost same. Modified flamelet combustion model was coupled to commercial CFD code interactively using user subroutine.
