  • An electronic ballast for driving automotive HID lamps is presented. The circuit topology is composed of a fly back converter, a half bridge inverter, and igniter using voltage doubler. A prototype was developed and tested on a 35W lamp with a 12V input voltage. To avoiding acoustic resonance the half bridge inverter is operated at 400Hz and provided a squared-wave voltage source to the lamp. The transient and steady state characteristics of the tested HID lapm are measured and analyzed.

  • In this paper, in order to develop a simple and high efficient ballast without an external igniter, a half-bridge type ballast with a coupled inductor and a frequency controlled synchronous rectifier is proposed. The internal LC resonance of the buck converter is used In generate a high voltage pulse for the ignition, and the coupled inductor filter is used for steady state ripple cancellation. Also, a synchronous buck converter is applied for the DC/DC converter stage. In order to improve the efficiency of the ballast, a frequency control method is proposed. This scheme reduces a circulation current and turn off loss of the MOSFET switch on the constant power operation, which results in increase of the efficiency of the ballast system about $4\%$, compared to a fixed frequency control. It consists a 2-stage version ballast with a PFC circuit. The results are verified with hardware experiments.

  • In general the data such as thrust, pressure, temperature and combustion time are measured in developing the propulsion system of solid rocket motor through static firing test. But in the case of personal surface to air missile there are required a severe safety specifications in order to eliminate gunner hazard from the exhaust plume of motors. The safety requirements lead to the design of separation device and safety igniter device. The dynamic firing test for the designed two devices should be conducted under the flight environmental conditions to verify the requirements compliance. In this study the technique for dynamic firing test of propulsion system of personal surface to air missile is proposed and the method to design the dynamic test bench is also studied.

  • In general liquid rocket nozzles are protected from hot combustion gas by regenerative cooling techniques. But due to the complexity of the cooling system, it causes increase of system cost and frequently source of the system malfunction. Recently, instead of regenerative cooing, ablative material are used to protect combustion chamber wall and nozzle. To determine the nozzle material erosion rate and erosion shape, more than 500 hot fire test were performed by using 100 lb thrust experimental liquid rocket. Test variable were propellant feed sequence, injector, position of igniter and liquid oxygen supply temperature.

  • This study investigated the aging reactions of three kinds of igniters(BKNO3, THPP, ZPP). The life-time of igniter depends on oxygen and moisture in the air. For example, Magnesium contained in the $BKNO_3$ reacts with oxygen and water to form oxide and hydrate. This reaction has an adverse effect on ignition reaction and could be information to analyze aging. Thermodynamic calculation could interpret the aging reaction by calculating flame temperature applying several variables(initial temperature, composition, etc.). If combustion is not completed because of aging igniters, flame temperature will be formed at a low range. The result of this research is expected to support the analysis of igniters aging reactions.

  • The present paper deals with the numerical simulation for the spray characteristics with swirling turbulent flows and dilution flows from swirl injectors in a simplified can type of gas turbine combustor. The main objective is to investigate the characteristics of swirling turbulent flows with dilution flows and to provide the qualitative results for the spray characteristics such as the droplet distribution and Sauter Mean Diameter(SMD). The gas-phase equations based on Eulerian approach were discretized by Finite Volume Method, together with SIMPLE algorithm and the Reynolds -Stress-Model. The liquid-phase equations based on Lagrangian method were used to predict the droplet behavior. The results of preliminary test are generally in good agreement with experimental data, and show that the anisotropy exists in the primary zone due to swirl velocity and injected air from primary injector, and then gradually decays due to turbulent mixing and consequently near-isotropy occurs in the region between primary and dilution zones. For the spray characteristics, it is indicated that the swirling flows of primary jet region increase the droplet atomization. In addition, it is showed that the swirling flows at the inlet region lead the air-fuel mixture to be distributed near the igniter and can significantly affect the spray behavior in the primary jet region.

  • A non-toxic Post Boost Stage(PBS) with LOX/Ethanol engine was successfully demonstrated at the Tomioka Facility of IHI Aerospace. IHI Aerospace has researched and developed the nontoxic propulsion systems and the LOX/Ethanol is one of the most attractive non-toxic bipropellant candidates. ${\rho}ISP$ of LOX/Ethanol is higher than ${\rho}ISP$ of the other non-toxic bipropellants as LOX/HC or $LOX/LH_2$. The authors studied the combustion characteristics of LOX/Ethanol propellant with the engine designed for LOX/LNG propellant. Also the injector with a built-in igniter was designed and examined its feasibility, ignition and combustion characteristics. We have demonstrated Post Boost Stage with future LOX/Ethanol engines. This propulsion system is targeted for expandable vehicle upper stage to accelerate delta-V to reach the required orbit. PBS Demonstration Model is designed as a test stand to evaluate feed system for integrated propulsion system and also to demonstrate Integrated Vehicle Health Management(IVHM) technique using local valve control and also valve behavior-monitoring capability.

  • This paper describes about the circuit design and test of the electronic Arm Fire Device. Electronic arm fire device consists of igniter, circuit and housing case and it operates without the actuator such as torque motor or solenoid. A high-voltage DC-DC converter was used to generate the voltage for initiating the LEEFI(Low Energy Exploding Foil Initiator). The MEMS switch was used to detect the acceleration that occurs when missile is launched, and the circuit was designed considering the size, performance, and specification of the electronic devices. The performance test was conducted to verify the designed circuit and we confirmed that it operates well.

  • In order to reduce risks from the Steam Generator Tube Rupture (SGTR) accident and to meet safety targets, various measures have been analyzed to minimize the amount of fission product (FP) release. In this paper, we propose an introduction of a Containment Filtered Venting System (CFVS) connected to the steam generator secondary side, which can reduce the amount of FP release while minimizing adverse effects identified in the previous studies. In order to compare the effect of new equipment with the existing strategy, accident simulations using MELCOR were performed. As a result of simulations, it is confirmed that CFVS operation lowers FP release into the environment, and the release fractions are lower (minimum 0.6% of the initial inventory for Cs) than that of the strategy which intends to depressurize the primary system directly (minimum 15.2% for Cs). The sensitivity analyses identify that refill of the CFVS vessel is a dominant contributor reducing the amount of FP released. As the new strategy has the possibility of hydrogen combustion and detonation in CFVS, the installation of an igniter inside the CFVS vessel may be considered in reducing such hydrogen risk.

  • As part of the commercialization research of small gas turbine engines, starting and normal operation control logic research of small gas turbine engine was conducted. It was investigated how the igniter, starting motor and fuel pump/valve are controlled during the ignition and normal operation process and it was applied to the prototype engine control unit(ECU) of the small gas turbine engine for commercialization research. Based on the ground test results, an ECU for flight test is being developed, and after completion of the development, an altitude test will be performed through an altitude test facility of Korea Aerospace Research Institute.
