This paper presents digital microflow controllers(DMFC), where a fluidic digital-to-analog converter(DAC) is used to achieve high-linearity, fine-level flow control for applications to precision biomedical dosing systems. The fluidic DAC, composed of binary-weighted flow resistance, controls the flow-rate based on the ratio of the flow resistance to achieve high-precision flow-rate control. The binary-weighted flow resistance has been specified by a serial or a parallel connection of an identical flow resistor to improve the linearity of the flow-rate control, thereby making the flow-resistance ratio insensitive to the size uncertainty in flow resistors due to micromachining errors. We have designed and fabricated three different types of 4-digit DMFC: Prototype S and P are composed of the serial and the parallel combinations of an identical flow resistor, while Prototype V is based on the width-varied flow resistors. In the experimental study, we perform a static test for DMFC at the forward and backward flow conditions as well as a dynamic tests at pulsating flow conditions. The fabricated DMFC shows the nonlinearity of 5.0% and the flow-rate levels of 16(2$^{N}$) for the digital control of 4(N) valves. Among the 4-digit DMFC fabricated with micromachining errors, Prototypes S and P show 27.2% and 27.6% of the flow-rate deviation measured from Prototype V, respectively; thus verifying that Prototypes S and P are less sensitive to the micromachining error than Prototype V.V.
In creating an avatar, consumers can find out for themselves their own sizes to be entered. Also, putting in a face creation main-page menu option enables clients to make up their faces and match them to their bodies. Through this process when purchasing clothes through the internet consumers can enter their own body sizes and create avatars that are identical to their body shape. The uniqueness of developed prototype is that it creates an avatar similar to one's body shape according to body size inputs and demonstrates visually to customers the on-line comfort test which was only available off-line traditionally. The avatar follows the movement of mouse from left to right which enables 3 dimensional visualization. Through maximizing the visual effect this research focuses on enabling consumers to feel subjective parts as if they are off-line. This study seeks to provide a type of prototype of an online shopping mall that meets the demand of the consumers using the 3D avatar.
The tank uses a twin turbo diesel engine equipped with two turbocharger systems for high output. The main component of the turbocharger system is the turbine housing through which the exhaust flows. Turbine housing is manufactured through a sand casting process, taking into account the shape and material characteristics according to the environmental conditions in which it is used. Currently, turbine housing is imported, and local production is necessary. In this study, basic research was conducted to localize the turbine housing of a tank diesel turbo engine. Reverse engineering and finite element analysis of the imported turbine housing were performed. The prototype of the turbine housing was printed using FDM and PBF 3D printers. The prototype of the turbine housing printed with an FDM 3D printer has an overall appearance similar to 3D modeling, but the printed surface of the whorl part is rough. The prototype printed with the PBF 3D printer is completely identical to the 3D modeling, including the whorl part.
Vortex-induced oscillation is a type of aeroelastic phenomenon, to which extended structures such as long-span bridges are most susceptible. The vortex-induced vibration (VIV) behaviors of a concerned bridge were investigated conventionally in virtue of wind tunnel tests on string-mounted sectional models. This necessitates the building of a linkage between the response of the sectional model and that of the prototype structure. Although many released literatures have related to this issue and provided suggestions, there is a lack of consistency among them. In this study, some theoretical models describing the vortex-induced structural motion, including the linear empirical model, the nonlinear empirical model and the modified (or generalized) nonlinear empirical model, are firstly reviewed. Then, the concept of equivalent mass density is introduced based on the principle that an equal input of energy should result in identical structural amplitudes. Based on these, the theoretical linkages between the amplitude of a section model and that corresponding to the prototype bridge are discussed with different analytical models. Theoretical derivation indicates that such connections are dependent mainly on two factors, one is the presupposed shape of deformation, and the other is the theoretical VIV model employed. The theoretical analysis in this study shows that, in comparison to the nonlinear empirical models, the linear one can result in obvious larger estimations of the full bridges' responses, especially in cases of cable-stayed bridges.
This paper describes the design and development of a novel semiconductor-based solid-state switch for damped oscillating voltage test system. The proposed switch is configured as two identical series-connected switch stacks, each of which comprising 10 series-connected IGBT function units. Each unit consists of one IGBT, a gate driver, and an auxiliary voltage sharing circuit. A single switch stack can block 20 kV-rated high voltage, and two stacks in series are proven applicable to 30 kV-rated high voltage. The turn-on speed of the switch is approximately 250 ns. A flyback topology-based power supply system with a front-end power factor correction is built for the drive circuit by loosely inductively coupling each unit with a ferrite core to the primary side of a power generator to obtain the advantages of galvanic isolation and compact size. After the simulation, measurement, and estimation of the parasitic effect on the gate driver, a prototype is assembled and tested under different operating regimes. Experimental results are presented to demonstrate the performance of the developed prototype.
In tis work, a three-stage pipelined A/D converter (ADC) was implemented to obtain 10-bit resolution at a conversion rate of 20 msamples/s for video applications. The ADC consists of three identical stages employing a mid-rise coding technique. The interstage errors such as offsets and clock feedthrough are digitally corrected in digitral logic by one overlapped bit between stages. The proposed ADC is optimized by adopting a unit-capacitor array architecture in the MDAC to improve the differential nonlinearity and the yield. Reduced power dissipation has been achieve dby using low-power latched comparators. The prototype was fabricated in a 0.8$\mu$m p-well CMOS technology. The ADC dissipates 160 mW at a 20 MHz clock rate with a 5 V single supply voltage and occupies a die area of 7 mm$^{2}$(2.7 mm $\times$ 2.6mm) including bonding pads and stand-alone internal bias circuit. The typical differential and integral nonlinarities of the prototype are less than $\pm$ 0.6 LSB and $\pm$ 1 LSB, respectively.
A new theoretical model on rain-wind induced vibration (RWIV) of a continuous stay cable is developed in this paper. Different from the existing theoretical analyses in which the cable was modeled as a segmental rigid element, the proposed scheme focuses on the in-plane and out-of-plane responses of a continuous stay cable, which is identical with the prototype cable on cable-stayed bridge. In order to simplify the complexities, the motion law of the rivulet on the cable surface is assumed as a sinusoidal way according to some results obtained from wind tunnel tests. Quasi-steady theory is utilized to determine the aerodynamic forces on the cable. Equations of motion of the cable are derived in a Cartesian Coordinate System and solved by using finite difference method to obtain the in-plane and out-of-plane responses of the cable. The results show that limited cable amplitudes are achieved within a limited range of wind velocity, which is a unique characteristic of RWIV of stay cable. It appears that the in-plane cable amplitude is much larger than the out-of-plane cable amplitude. Rivulet frequency, rivulet distribution along cable axis, and mean wind velocity profile, all have significant effects on the RWIV responses of the prototype stay cable. The effects of damping ratio on RWIVs of stay cables are carefully investigated, which suggests that damping ratio of 1% is needed to well mitigate RWIVs of prototype stay cables.
A microprocessor-based multi-function switchgear for the protection, measurement and control of the power system is presented. For the extraction of the RMS values of the fundamental components of current and voltage signals, a simple digital filter based on cross-correlation of the distorted signal with even and odd heptagonal waves is used. The frequency response of this filter is almost identical to that of the filter based on the discrete fourier transform, while its computational requirement is far less. For the time delay element relaying, a new log-table based relaying algorithm is suggested. The suggested use of the heptagonal wave cross-correlation digital filter algorithm and a new relaying algorithm reduce the computational needs so drastically that all functions of the switchgear can be implemented on the microprocessor system. Real time testing of the implemented daboratory prototype show good practical response under different operating conditions.
This paper proposes a novel soft-switching interleaved boost converter composed of two shunted elementary PFC boost conversion units and an auxiliary inductor. This converter is able to turn on both the active power switches at zero voltage to reduce their switching losses and evidently raise the conversion efficiency and power factor. Since the two parallel-operated elementary boost units are identical, operation analysis and design for the converter module becomes quite simple. A laboratory test circuit is built, and the circuit operation shows satisfactory agreement with the theoretical analysis. The performance of the proposed PFC rectifier was evaluated on an experimental 300[W] PFC prototype.
