  • Objectives: This paper examines the mediation effect of depression in the relationship between parental abuse, parental alcoholism, and suicidal ideation in university students. Methods: A survey on abusive experience from parents, parental alcoholism, depression, and suicidal ideation was conducted with 415 students from six universities. Structural equation analysis was performed using the AMOS program. Results: The result demonstrates that depression has some mediation effects between parental abuse and suicidal ideation in university students. Meanwhile, depression has an entire mediation effect between parental alcoholism and suicidal ideation. Conclusions: This study shows that the parental alcoholism by itself did not affect suicidal ideation in university students, but depression did. Experience of parental abuse is a significant risk factor which may cause suicidal ideation, and depression may cause suicidal ideation indirectly. It calls for efforts to prevent parental abuse and emphasizes the necessity of paying primary attention to the mediation effect of depression in preventing suicidal ideation.

  • Ideation is a process of generating new ideas or solutions using online crowd-sourcing technologies. This process has the potential to change the ways by which government agencies innovate and solve problems. Although increasingly more government agencies are implementing online ideation programs to tap into their employees' ideas and creativity, little is known about the unique challenges and effective practices of such programs. Thus, many government agencies are undergoing trial and error and often reinventing the wheel. This research aims to address this problem. By analyzing a focus group session and four cases of U.S. federal government ideation programs designed for their employees, this research identifies important organizational and technological challenges and effective practices. Furthermore, effective practices are grouped into different phases of ideation process and strategic vs. tactical levels to provide more meaningful and actionable insights. This research is an important step towards building a theoretical foundation for government ideation programs. The implications and limitations of this study are discussed.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to identify factors that influence the suicidal ideation of the unemployed. Methods: Participants in this study consisted of 207 unemployed individuals from G city those who were participating in activities in a job center. A survey was conducted from June 13 to September 21, 2014. Research tools were suicidal ideation, self-esteem, somatization, job-seeking anxiety status, problem-focused coping, and family support. Data were analyzed using SPSS 12.0, and included the mean, standard deviation, t-test, one-way ANOVA and Scheffe test. Pearson's correlation coefficient and multiple regression by stepwise selection were also conducted to identify factors influencing suicidal ideation. Results: Suicidal ideation differed significantly according to marital status and spouse income. Suicidal ideation was positively correlated with somatization and job-seeking anxiety status, and negatively correlated with self-esteem and family support. Effective variables were family support (${\beta}=-.03$, p<.001), somatization (${\beta}=.22$, p=.001), spouse income (Yes)(${\beta}=-.18$, p=.003) and self-esteem (${\beta}=-.14$, p=.041). These variables explained 28.2% of the variance in suicidal ideation. Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, it is necessary to develop family support improvement programs to decrease suicidal ideation of the unemployed.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors influencing suicidal ideation in middle school students. Methods: Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire (SIQ) results, personal characteristics, child abuse experiences, and stress were obtained from a sample of 657 middle school students from 3 conveniently selected schools in S city. Results: Suicidal ideation of participants was positively correlated with child abuse experience, stress, psychosomatic symptoms, antisocial personality and depressive tendencies, whereas sociability and self-esteem were negatively correlated with suicidal ideation. Significant factors influencing suicidal ideation included an antisocial personality tendency, stress related to the family environment, mental abuse, gender (female), depressive trend, running away from home, sociability, and stress related to academic performance. These factors explained 39.9% of the variance. Conclusion: These results suggest that earlier screening and intervention programs for depression and stress in middle school students will be helpful in reducing suicidal ideation. Further studies are needed in which other strategies that could prevent suicidal ideation in middle school students are examined.

  • Objective After the Sewol ferry disaster, bereavement with suicidal ideation was a critical mental health problem that was accompanied by various neuropsychological symptoms. This study examined the frontal alpha asymmetry (FAA), heart rate variability (HRV), and several psychological symptoms in bereaved family members (BFM) after the Sewol ferry disaster. Methods Eighty-three BFM after the Sewol ferry disaster were recruited. We assessed FAA, HRV, and psychological symptoms, including depression, post-traumatic stress, post-traumatic growth factor, anxiety, grief, and positive resources, between BFM with the presence and absence of current suicidal ideation. Results Compared to BFM without suicidal ideation, BFM with suicidal ideation showed a higher FAA with right dominance. Significant differences in psychological symptoms were observed between the groups. In BFM with suicidal ideation, the low: high frequency (LF:HF) ratio correlated with social resources and support. Conclusion The FAA and LF:HF ratio may be biomarkers that represent the pathological conditions of BFM with suicidal ideation. If researched further, they may shed light on the interaction between bereavement with suicidal ideation and social resources for therapeutic intervention.

  • This study aimed to examine the effects of socially prescribed perfectionism, sleep duration, and sleep quality on suicidal ideation in Korean high school students and to investigate if sleep duration and quality moderated the relationship between socially prescribed perfectionism and suicidal ideation. The participants of this study were 840 students (544 boys and 296 girls) from six high schools located in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. The Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire (Reynolds, 1988) was used to measure suicidal ideation. And the socially prescribed perfectionism was assessed by the Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale (Hewitt & Flett, 1991). The students were asked to respond to a question regarding how long they slept a day as well as the Sleep Quality Scale (Yi, 2005). The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics and hierarchical regressions. The moderating effect of sleep duration and quality were investigated using the analysis procedures proposed by Baron and Kenny (1986). The results showed that the level of socially prescribed perfectionism and sleep quality increased the level of suicidal ideation. In addition, sleep quality moderated the relationship between socially prescribed perfectionism and suicidal ideation. The effect of socially prescribed perfectionism on suicidal ideation was greater when sleep quality was poor, compared to when it was good.
